High-school basketball: Chief Sealth girls defeat Evergreen

Another basketball showdown between neighboring high schools – this time, Chief Sealth International High School and Evergreen High School (White Center), in a girls-varsity game tonight at Sealth. The home team won big; more details and photos ahead:

WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand reports:

The two teams were evenly matched when it came to being athletic, aggressive, and opportunistic, but it was Sealth’s deep bench and height advantage that factored into the Seahawks’ 66-33 win over Evergreen.

While both teams were equally adept in stealing the ball, Sealth managed to wind up in possession of it more often, especially when the traffic got heavy around mid-court. The Seahawks also outdistanced the Wolverines at turning those steals into scores. Sealth’s Zoe Haywood was the most effective at taking the ball away, and she had 10 points on the night to show for it. In the third quarter, Sealth went on a 16-point run. Also scoring in double digits for Sealth: Mariah Rubio-Reboca (15), Victoria Elleby (11), and Lucresha Taylor (10).

Evergreen’s leading scorers were Maria Martinez with 7 and Ticka Alefaio with 13.

Next up: Sealth plays Foster on December 29th; Evergreen plays Seattle Christian this Thursday.
