Madison, Alki win ‘Schools of Distinction’ award

Just in from Seattle Public Schools: Madison Middle School and Alki Elementary are two of five district schools just announced as winners of the “School of Distinction” award, signifying “outstanding academic improvement and math,” according to the official district announcement. It’s the fourth consecutive award for Madison, whose principal Henterson Carlisle mentioned the three previous awards in his introduction to the School Board candidates’ forum on Tuesday night and said they were hoping to make it four in a row – now they have. There’ll be a ceremony in the schools’ honor, but the date’s not set yet. In all, 99 schools around the state won the award.

Alki Elementary truly deserves this recognition. The principal, teachers and parent volunteers work really hard to help the student community succeed. I am no longer an Alki parent – my kids now attend another School of Distinction, John Stanford International School and I am proud of both schools.
We miss the feel of Alki Elementary, though.
    Congratulations!

As a Madison parent and volunteer, I am extremely proud to hear this. Mr. Carlisle is one of the best principals I have ever known, and the entire staff there is second to none. Way to go Madison!!

    “outstanding academic improvement and math,”

What – is not math an academic improvement????

Flynlo, sorry, that may be a typo on my part, I will check. Always extra-embarrassing to have an error in a story about academics!

How on earth has Madison managed to win the “most improved” award four years in a row? I mean, how much room for improvement can one school have?
