Citywide weekend traffic alert, including WS Junction Car Show

It’s still technically summer, and around the city, there’s a busy slate of festivities over the next four days. SDOT is already out with its weekend traffic-alert roundup. Note that this ONLY includes events they believe might affect traffic. As such, the only West Seattle event mentioned is the WS Junction Car Show, 8 am-4 pm on Sunday, since it’s closing California SW in The Junction between SW Oregon and SW Edmunds (which means some bus re-routing, too). Read on for the entire citywide list:

The next four days, Thursday through Sunday, September 15 – 18, will be packed with sports activities, ethnic festivals, rallies, parades, and vendor events including the annual Boats Afloat Show. In addition, mini-parks will be popping up all around Seattle this Friday, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. PARK(ing) Day is an annual global event where community members and artists collaborate to transform parking spaces into temporary public places. The city of Seattle is hosting a park on Fifth Avenue between Columbia and Marion. Visitors can get information about the city’s Race and Social Justice Initiative, Latino Heritage Month celebrations and emergency preparedness.

Compounding the list of traffic generating activities, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close SR 520 between Montlake Boulevard in Seattle and Interstate 405 in Bellevue starting at 11 p.m. Friday, and reopen all lanes by 5 a.m. Monday. The Bellevue Way Northeast overpass above SR 520 will also be closed during the work. The closures are expected to impact traffic on I-5, I-90 and I-405. Drivers heading to Seattle for sports and other events, in particular the Saint Demetrios Greek festival in the Montlake area adjacent to SR520, should plan alternate routes. To help ease congestion, WSDOT is shifting the express lane schedules on I-5 and I-90.

While it will be a fun-filled weekend, it could also be frustrating for motorists. The Seattle Department of Transportation encourages event-goers to reduce their stress by leaving the car at home and trying one of the many alternate modes of transportation available – Metro Transit, the West Seattle Water Taxi, the Sounder commuter train, Link light rail, car pool, bicycle or even walking, if feasible.
