West Seattle Summer Fest 2011 eve: Street closure, and more

As the West Seattle Summer Fest motto goes, “Let’s close the streets and see what happens.” And as of this evening, till sometime Sunday night, closed they are – California SW between Alaska and Edmunds, and Alaska between 44th and 42nd. Setup is under way, but so is fun – The Junction’s third Shop Late Thursdays of the summer (till 9 pm – participating businesses are listed here), and more. We’ll have a full report later, but just wanted to remind you about the streets, for starters. P.S. Can you help make Summer Fest as green as green can be? There’s a need for volunteers on two shifts:

Volunteer Friday 3 pm-8 pm or Sunday 11 am-2 pm. Help educate festivalgoers on how to recycle and compost. Help make the festival a Zero Waste event! Contact Liz@wsjunction.org ASAP …

P.S. Our favorite pre-Summer Fest photo thus far:

Summer Fest officially opens tomorrow morning at 10 – we’ll be in the information booth again this year (at California/Alaska); come by and say hi!

Is there a live web cam in the Junction at all?

Yes – see our traffic page. Looks down on California/Alaska (or find it from city map) – I am covering an event and unable to get you direct link at the moment. Good point, we’ll have to remember to use it during Summer Fest! TR

We have only lived in WS for 13 years … but it will always be the “Street Fair” to us! Yay Easy Street!

Tracy, this may be a silly question, but can you tell me where Caspar Babypants is playing tomorrow evening? I’m trying to let my preschooler families know where to gather but I can’t tell where they will be on the Summerfest site. I understand there is only one stage this year but when I was in the Junction this eve it seemed they were setting up some sort of platform at Alaska / Cali and I vaguely remember an earlier article here mentioning some acts might be there again this year? Thanks in advance for any insight you may be able to lend.

There are NO silly questions – that’s why we are thrilled to have been allowed to share the information booth space the past few years at Summer Fest, because besides reporting live on the festival, we also get to answer questions from time to time, and that’s one of our favorite things to do. I didn’t know there would be a platform, but there IS an “informal performance area” at California/Alaska, near where we will be in the info booth, and Caspar Babypants is the only musical performer who will be there (perfectly suitable for his style). If you check the music list on the Summer Fest site, you’ll see “In The Junction” noted … and in this case, it literally means the California/Alaska “junction” … See you there! – TR

Got it, thanks Tracy! I am sending the email to my families now–glad I didn’t direct them to the other end of the street fair! I should say, I was there in the early stages of set-up so I may have presumed it was to be a “platform”–I certainly saw a slightly elevated rubberized floor taking shape and some other structure to the side, but that could have been your information booth. If not elevated just hope the little groupies can get a view of Caspar. Either way, we’ll see you there!

Shouldn’t that be “California SW between Genesee and Edmunds”?

    • WSB July 7, 2011 (11:15 pm)

SW Oregon is open to traffic, but north of there part of the street is closed again. So it’s not technically closed all the way to Genesee, which is why I don’t write it that way … TR
