West Seattle scene: Alki today, Waikiki tomorrow?

While it’s by no means unusual to spot stand-up paddleboarders off Alki and other West Seattle beaches, this time of year they’re usually a little more covered-up than these two. Thanks to JayDee for sharing the pic (before the clouds moved in) – he points out the air temperature at the time was 48 degrees. (Just a bit cooler than the 50-degree water temperature.) Forecast, you ask? Windy after midnight; rain returning tomorrow.

So, if they fell off their boards, they would have how long before hypothermia set in???

Even with survival gear, the local Coast Guard commander said when we covered his speech to the West Seattle Kiwanis recently that you couldn’t last more than a day. So without it – hmm, probably much shorter. But they weren’t too far from shore to swim …

Without a wetsuit or other protection, you’ve got about 10-15 minutes before hypothermia starts to set in.

If you fall you just get back on your board and paddle in- no prob. Should be wearing a leash so that the board doesnt get away from them.

Sorry, comment time is over.
