Back on Tuesday, we reported on two baseball players with West Seattle High School ties – one senior, one alum – drafted by the majors. After our report, a third one was drafted, and tonight we have a wrapup on all three with details courtesy of WSHS assistant baseball coach Scott Meaker:
3 players from West Seattle that played at WSHS for Head Coach Velko Vitalich were drafted by Major League Baseball (MLB) this week.
It started with the second day of drafting on Tuesday. Zach Varce, currently a Junior RHP for the University of Portland, was drafted in round 11 (355th overall) by the NY Yankees! Zach reportedly is on his way to the east coast soon to sign with one of the most storied sports organizations in the world! Congratulations to him and his West Seattle family!
Also on Tuesday, current WSHS Senior SS Trevor Martin was drafted in the 20th round (619th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals. Trevor was the unanimous MVP of the Metro League this year, the league that has brought home the Washington State 3A Baseball title for the last 2 years (O’dea HS in 2009 & 2010!). Trevor has an offer to play at perennial national champion contender Western Nevada College near Carson City, NV. (see story about his signing last January)
Coach Meaker’s report continues after the jump:
Trevor is still considering his options, but he reportedly has been honored with a very attractive offer from the Cardinals organization. Good luck to Trevor.
On Wednesday, another standout WSHS Senior , Ryan Wiggins, was drafted in the 46th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ryan is reviewing his options as well. He had planned to attend Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, ID. LCSC boasts one of the finest records of any college program anywhere in the USA. They have had 110 players drafted by MLB, including 7 this year, and there are currently 14 active MLB players that played with the Warriors, an NAIA World Series regular contender (see their link here). Either way Ryan goes (pro or college), he is sure to be heard from again as a great baseball player.
West Seattle is very excited and proud of this group of young men. A quick study of all the players from Washington State that were drafted this week and it seems West Seattle High School is the only school with 3 players drafted in 2010. So we congratulate Coach Velko Vitalich for a long history of championship teams and championship players, and it is especially an honor to congradulate these three outstanding atheletes. As you look at them, you can see why coach Vitalich wins … Look how strong this group of three (Catcher – Pitcher – Shortstop) is “up the middle,” as they say in baseball terms.
Thanks again to Coach Meaker for sharing so much WSHS baseball information this year.
