2 reports put Jefferson Square Starbucks on closure list

First one comes directly to WSB from a reliable source that’s contributed important news here before, reporting that the closure was announced to the staff at a meeting within the past several days – this is the Starbucks store that replaced Infinity Espresso less than a year ago on the north side of Jefferson Square, sbuxjefferson.jpgNOT the “licensee” stand inside Safeway. Second report of this (hat tip to TPN from Blogging Georgetown) comes from a map the Times has been keeping of reported closures. This Starbucks is so relatively new, it’s only been 11 months since we first reported it was coming – it opened in late fall. The company itself has drawn criticism for the time gap between its announcement that 600 stores would close and its upcoming public announcement of which stores are closing. Its spokespeople are not currently confirming or denying closure reports for any specific locations; we requested comment on this one and received an official (albeit generic) statement – read on for the full text:

The stores identified for closure are spread across all major U.S. markets with approximately 70 percent of them opened since fiscal 2006. Starbucks plans to communicate the status of each store to its partners (employees) by mid-July, with notification to the first 50 stores scheduled to close by July occurring immediately. Concurrently, approximately 6,600 remaining U.S. company-operated stores will be
notified that they are not affected.

At this time, I cannot confirm any store closures for West Seattle. Out of respect and dignity for partners, Starbucks will only share store closure information with impacted partners first, details around specific locations will not be disclosed at this time, however Starbucks plans to publicize a full list of the first 50 stores on
www.starbucks.com by mid-July. The remaining impacted stores have closing dates that will be staggered over the next several months. Each month, after a 30-day closing notice has been communicated to all affected partners, Starbucks will post a list of the stores that are scheduled to close. Store closures will continue through March 2009.

We commit to treating all partners with dignity and respect. As such, we expect to place many of the affected partners into available positions at nearby Starbucks stores. Those partners who are not offered a comparable position within a reasonable distance of their current location will be offered a severance payment to aid in their transition.

All affected partners – including full-time and part-time – are eligible for severance based on job title and current pay rate.

Besides the Jefferson Square store, Starbucks’ other company-owned stores in West Seattle are the drive-thru next to Taco Time in the Fauntleroy Triangle area, Admiral (the first WS SBUX), Westwood Village, Alki, and Morgan Junction.

My sister works at Sbux headquarters. The list will not be released until the company has pesonally gone to each store to be closed, spoken to the “partners” at each store and reviewed their options with them. They aren’t willing to send them an email or tell them over the phone. Love ’em or hate ’em, they are trying to do the right thing. When i was at Amazon, you didn’t know you were part of the lay-off’s until a security guard came to your desk gave you 15 minutes to pack and walked you out.

And that was exactly what happened to me at Disney – got to work one morning, found out my keycard wasn’t working, somebody let me in and I found out there was “A Meeting” in five minutes. (I wound up being retained for some time to update content on the site that was involved – and got to do it from home – so less traumatic for me, after the initial shock.) In this case, I appreciate telling the store and its team first, which our source indicates has happened here – but once a store has been told, waiting perhaps weeks to officially announce it to the rest of the world can be seen as a little weird in this world of (for better or for worse) instant info. (Actually, even way back in 2001, I got a hint of impending doom because Michael Eisner gave an interview to a British publication the preceding weekend saying our site’s future was in question, and CNET picked it up posthaste.)

That’s a bummer, I wish they would have closed the safeway location instead. This store donated coffee and snacks to our JuNo events a few times and the staff was always super friendly.

I’m very disappointed you are closing the Starbucks in Jefferson Square next to Bartells! Of all the Starbucks I’ve been to, these Baristas make the best flavored coffees I’ve had! They all are very professional, their store is clean and it represents Starbuck well.

The last four times I’ve tried to get coffee at Starbuck in Safeway (Jefferson Square) I have had to wait 3 or 4 minutes for the gal to see I was there. I was the only one at the counter but she was busy flirting with one of the Safeway employees. She took my order and I had to wait another 3 minutes while she finished her conversation with the Boy! This has happened 3 times to me. The last time she came up to the counter and wiped her nose with her hand! I decided not to get coffee!

Please don’t close the “real” Starbucks at Jefferson Square! Thanks, JB

Dang, I wonder if they are going to close the Starbux location in the bathroom at Tullys. That would suck.

  • Sarag July 11, 2008 (11:31 am)

Janna, WSB are not involved in the closures; you realize this, I hope? It’s hard to tell from your comment, as you state, “I’m very disappointed you are closing…” Anyway, everyone complains about the JS Safeway Starbucks, wishing its demise, but once again – it is not a Starbucks. It is an LC (Licensed Concepts) kiosk, and any baristas there are actually Safeway employees. It’s the same at any Target “Starbucks,” and the vast majority of airport locations. Barnes & Noble is another story entirely, as those are Barnes & Noble cafes that “Proudly Serve Starbucks.” I have been told that there will be a list of Licensed Concepts kiosk closures, but I don’t know when that information will be released. And no, I do not work for Starbucks; just very close to someone who does (at corporate).

If it is true, I hope the soon-to-be-ex employees are able to find new work quickly.
It’s no fun trying to live without a paycheck.

Why don’t we have a bikini barista shed in WS? There’s lots of space at the old Huling lots.
    .
    I’m just sayin’ …

  • Rick July 11, 2008 (11:56 am)

Mebbe a bikini barista carwash at Huling? Good luck to all soon to be ex-employees. I know a few of ’em.

  • ToddinWestwood July 11, 2008 (12:01 pm)

they better not close the one in my garage. That goes for the one in my other garage.

  • ToddinWestwood July 11, 2008 (12:02 pm)

(said in Homer voice) “Mmmmmm, Bikini coffe shop, aggggghhhhhh, drool drool”

  • grr July 11, 2008 (12:14 pm)

    mm…sprinkles and bikinis..mmm

I keep trying to get Hotwire to do that…they keep saying no.

The newest SBUX at Jefferson Sq could do well when the Whole Foods complex opens across the street. It could be why they chose to open one in that spot.

  • WSB July 11, 2008 (12:19 pm)

That’s the only reason I thought the store might not wind up on the closure list – but it’s going to be a year before any of the new apartments come online (Mural in the ex-Petco parking lot is the closest and the furthest along, then the Capelouto QFC etc. project is hot on its heels). Perhaps one of those megadevelopments will then get an SBUX; as reported here sometime back, there was one sketched into an architect rendering for the 35th/Avalon project, though no formal commitment.

  • JimmyG July 11, 2008 (1:15 pm)

SBUX could take a giant step forward if they would close all of their “licensed concept” (franchises) ASAP. They set the branding of SBUX back years.

I used to be a loyal diehard SBUX fan in the late 80s and early 90s. But the quality of service took such a divebomb that I’m an independent espresso store customer now. (Go C & P, Cafe Rozella, and Diva!)

  • B July 11, 2008 (1:43 pm)

I’m betting Whole Foods will have it’s own coffee inside just like Metro. The other ones I’ve been to always have some sort of coffee counter.

I’m with you JimmyG, Diva all the way!

  • k July 11, 2008 (2:38 pm)

it’s amazing that they are providing severance for part-time employees! wow!

  • toomanyratsinacageakaWS July 11, 2008 (2:42 pm)

I agree JimmyG, I haven’t been that impressed with the licensed concept stores.

  • CB July 11, 2008 (3:09 pm)

Good riddance. The staff was rude. The coffee was cold. I can see why that store underperformed.

  • rjb July 11, 2008 (4:40 pm)

I remember reading a couple months ago in the “Rants & Rave” section of the Sunday paper that the Starbucks early morning supply deliveries woke up half the people living in the Square. At least now maybe they can get their sleep.

  • Jeannie July 11, 2008 (7:13 pm)

Gee, I wonder if Howard Schultz will lose his job. As if!

Come back, Infinity Coffee – we miss you!

  • sassy July 12, 2008 (9:44 am)

I’m with Jeannie – missing Infinity Coffee too!
I’ve been to that Starbucks a few times – and interrupted the staff on multiple occasions have chats about ‘selling’. Tacky, tacky, tacky.
I mean, how much more crap does Sbux have to try to sell in one location? It’s annoying. Focus on your product quality, not product line extension.

Though to be totally honest – Jefferson Square in general does my head in.
You have to mentally prepare yourself before entering the parking lot – on foot, or in a car.

  • EdmundsBluff July 15, 2008 (8:35 pm)

I’m disappointed they would close this store so soon. I absolutely prefer other coffee hang outs to Sbux, but I seriously find myself at the J.Square store every morning for a cup- Guess I’ll need to take a few extra steps to the RedCup or Uptown.

Sorry, comment time is over.
