West Seattle photos: The latest seaside scenes

mattlpsunset.jpg

Tonight’s sunset at Lincoln Park, from WSB contributing photojournalist Matt Durham (prints of his WSB photos and other work are available at his site, mattdurhamphotography.com). We have three other seaside scenes to share, these taken by Mac Lerch south of Alki Point:

Any birders recognize that last group? The wings look ternlike but the only terns we’ve seen around here are white.

The submarine must have been going really fast because it looks like that section of water in the photo is running downhill towards the right. :-)

The submarine was out pretty far, off Alki point heading north.

The birds are much darker because of the light and the camera speed so they still might be the ones you’re thinking of…

They cannot be terns, they have not yet returned from their migration south. Shorebird flocks along the beach are limited to Dunlin, Sanderlings, Black Turnstones, and Surfbirds. A couple of the birds show black in the “wing-pits” which suggests Black-bellied Plover. It also appears there are a couple birds on the water, which would suggest gulls. Therefore, I don’t know what they are.

The sub looks close, but it’s in the northbound traffic lane off Alki Point. They don’t deviate from that. Maybe a telephoto shot makes it look closer. As for the birds, there was a flock of brants (geese-like birds that make a soft honk-honk sound as they paddle around) on and near the beach just now. When the flock took off it looked a lot like the ones in the photo. They come here often and it’s always funny to watch them. It sounds like they are all talking at once as they swim around.

Sorry, comment time is over.
