West Seattle Christmas lights, 11/28/07

Earlier than usual tonight because as West Seattle Christmas lights go, this is breaking news – the Menashe family’s famous display on Beach Drive was finally on in full glory when we drove by a short time ago – THURSDAY NIGHT UPDATE: we’ve replaced our original cameraphone photo with a pic courtesy of Christopher Shoemaker, who took it after helping the Menashes with the finishing touches:

The house is on the water side of Beach Drive roughly halfway between Me-Kwa-Mooks and Lowman Beach. Meantime, if you’ve put up, or seen, an especially bright (or unique) display, please let us know about it!

Not to be a humbug, cus it is beautiful, but I hope they put up some solar panels or something to power all those lights…

RS: I’m totally with you. I never was one for these ostentatious display of lights anyway. Don’t even get me started on the notion of cutting down trees to use as decoration for a month before throwing them away.

Aidan – you humbug! They are called tree farms. Why spoil those who want to spread some good natured cheer. We know what you’ll get from Santa this year…

WSGal: Bah indeed. I don’t celebrate Christmas. I celebrate Festivus. A Festivus for the rest of us!

Beautiful! With it getting dark by 3pm this time of year, we need all the lights that we can muster. It’s a cheery symbol of the fact that civilization rules.

Seriously, that’s what this time of year means to me. If we were just another species of ape, we’d be shivering in a dark cave or lean-to, and probably hibernating for 23 hours of the day until, oh, March.

    SERENITY NOW!

Speaking as someone who helps with this display every year you have no idea how much cheer this brings both to people who celebrate Christmas and those who don’t. The family has had people knock on their door at midnight by people who are bummed that the lights are turned off at 11:30. How can’t you smile when you see a nice display like this……

The Menashe’s Christmas display is absolutely beautiful! We came from Montana to see the amazing lights and as soon as we turned the corner, we could see the huge red star shining from miles away! It brings a smile to your face just seeing the awesome display! We love it!!!

Thankyou for the xmas lights. We are from Alaska and wished soo much to see the lights. We are here for medical reasons and with the children grown and bodies becomming frail we will not be able to have lights of our own.You have brought joy to our hearts and a hope for the New Year.Bright blessing to all for the hollidays.

They do a great job every year – and I know they put a ton of work into making it special. Reminds me of when my parents would take us by the Gai’s house when we were little. The Menashe’s display has become tradition in West Seattle and something “kids” (young and old) can look forward to. Great Job!

Sorry, comment time is over.
