Post-Valentine opportunity for parents

Can’t go out Wednesday night? This Friday, Alki Community Center offers another “Parents’ Night Out” opportunity — they’ll watch 5- to 10-year-olds from 6:30-9 pm, $10/child, but you have to register by this Wednesday. And if you’re thinking, “Great, but what’s there to do Friday night?” we just heard about a splendid, affordable music/dining opportunity — a Chief Sealth HS band benefit at the school, 6-9 pm Friday, featuring music, dinner, and not only the Sealth jazz band, but also the fabulous West Seattle Big Band, $10 per person (under 12 welcome too, $5 each) — no web link on this but 938-3531 is the number for tickets.

What’s the meaning of Valentine’s day? Someone please elaborate.

Valentines (no need for apostrophe) Day originated back in the early 1800s to celebrate St. Hallmark and St. Tom Shane. Early wealthy settlers in the United States exchanged red roses to celebrate these “Saints”, but a poor settler by the name Sampson Whitman began celebrating these “saints” by exchanging small chocolates (hence Whitman Samplers). In the late 1800s, the celebration turned ugly when men began honoring their female partners with these gifts. In a massive revolt, women across the United States withheld one of the most sacred items in the world at this time……nope, not that…..they withheld their male partners cattle!! This caused a terrible procedure called Disforce since this was a disgrace and was a show of incredible force. It was common at this point for many men and women to leave each other…this evolved into common day divorce. Hope this helps explain Valentines Day!

A word to the wise. Show and tell your wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend or “good buddy” that you love them everyday and then you don’t have to go through the BS of “Valentines Day”!

When I was a kid, we cut up construction paper in the shape of hearts and gave them to our friends. Eventually, it took on romantic dimensions and caused me to blush when I both gave and received them from the right people.

Be dreamy. Make somebody a valentine.

Sorry, comment time is over.
