Our new Tae Kwon Do class is up and running at Hiawatha Community Center (2700 California Ave. SW). We’ve got a few new members and we are looking for many more.

Adults (18 and older) can sign up to learn Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art known for its fast sparring techniques, dynamic forms, and strong kicks. Our club is focused on self-improvement in a non-competitive atmosphere that promotes unity, respect, and indomitable spirit.

Classes cost $30/month and meet Mondays & Thursdays 7-8:30pm and Saturdays 11:15am-1:15pm. Beginners are definitely welcome and preferred; new students can join at any time! Please call (206) 684-7441 for questions or registration.

I am still trying to figure out the best way to get more West Seattlites involved in the class, so what I’d like to know is “What would it take to interest you in taking a martial arts class?”.

Are there additional costs? Uniforms? Gear?

    Good question!

After a student completes 4 weeks of training I give them a white belt test (if they are ready and have been attending regularly). At that point they can order a uniform with a white belt. I have a wholesale account so the students can usually get the uniform for around $20-25. I tell students that they are welcome to buy uniforms elsewhere if they can find them cheaper.

Other than that, students can feel free to purchase optional sparring equipment, but it is not required and not needed early on. Usually some shin/instep guards ($6) and mouthguards ($2-3) are nice to have.

There is no charge for belt tests.

I do the class voluntarily and don’t do it to make money, so I’ve tried to keep the costs as low as possible.
