Carrie BurrMemberWest Seattle High School Softball team earns the first trip to the state tournament in school history!
WSHS Softball team is playing in the state tournament tomorrow at the SERA Park in Tacoma. Our first game is at 9am against Columbia River. When we win that game – we play the winner of Sedro-Wolley/Holy Names at 3pm. We lose – we play the loser of that game at 1pm. This is a double elimination tournament.
How we got there: We beat Sammamish 2-1 in the first game on Friday, then we lost to Holy Names 10-0, then we came back and beat Mt. Si in a thrilling game – that went extra innings. We were down 8-2 in the third inning; with a pitching change – pitched Kelsi Baker (who had just pitched the last 2 games). She shut them down the rest of the game – giving up only 1 hit and striking out 9! We started making some timely hits, scoring some runs then all of a sudden it was 8-5 going into the bottom of the 7th inning. Kristin Jackson was up and hit a line drive to center field. Then Millie Osborne hit – my two seniors willed in 3 runs to tie it up 8-8. We go into extra innings – load the bases in the bottom of the 8th but can’t score. Then we go into the 9th inning – where the last out goes on second (this is the international tie-breaker rule). Mt. Si scores 1. Then it’s our turn. Cortney Elliott is the runner on second. Kelsi Baker fails to bunt, passed ball allows Cortney to advance to 3rd. Kelsi hits a base hit to right field – tying the game up at 9-9, but we have no outs! I sub freshman Gabby Flores in as a courtesy runner for Kelsi (pitcher). Rosie Patnode is up. Failed bunt and run – but Gabby makes it to second! Rosie hits it to 2nd base – Gabby advances to 3rd with one out. My lead off – Annie Patnode is up. Annie slaps a line drive to 3rd base – 3rd basemen makes a diving catch touches her glove and goes foul. Gabby goes and scores. I, Coach Burr, celebrates……………………… ahhhhhh but the umpire ruled the ball and glove was in foul territory. I argue – but lose. Next pitch – Annie Patnode is grinning from ear to ear – takes an inside pitch a slaps it up the first baseline – Gabby SCORES!!!!! Coach Burr immediately gets doused with water bottle after water bottle from all the team!!!!!!!!!!!

WSBKeymasterWell, they lost the second game 8-1, so they’ll be coming home. But congratulations for making it to state for the first time!
Meantime, Seattle Lutheran is still in it in the 2B softball tournament – won its first game today 12-0, playing another game at 7 tonight, against Garfield Palouse.
