BobLoblawParticipantMrs. Loblaw has declared that I cannot follow through on plans to run for mayor in 2009 due to fears that the media will uncover unpleasant things about my past (I swear I didn’t know that was in my car; she told me she was 18; etc.) and my present ($350/month for online ‘subscriptions’ is not an addiction!).
.
Our current mayor has raised $200,000 already, and looks to be running unopposed. We cannot let this happen!
.
Who from West Seattle will step forward as a candidate or with a suitable candidate? I’ll get the checkbook out …
January 4, 2009 at 7:05 pm #653153
roundthesoundParticipantNo more McCheese! Let’s please find a suitable candidate. It’s not going be difficult to convince the people of Seattle that this administration doesn’t deserve another term!
January 4, 2009 at 7:15 pm #653154
JiggersMemberI’m just curious how much are you willing to shell out BobLoblaw? because it’s all about the $$$$. I may know of someone here in WS who might be interested, but he can’t do it alone, and no, it isn’t me either.
January 4, 2009 at 8:12 pm #653155
BobLoblawParticipantBob Loblaw is willing to give as much as he can, as well as contribute as many volunteer hours as humanly possible. Seriously — this man cannot be allowed to stay in office. We need common sense and leadership.
January 4, 2009 at 8:14 pm #653156
karenParticipantCommon sense and leadership? Come on – this is politics!
January 4, 2009 at 9:39 pm #653157
celeste17ParticipantI might not be able to donate much money but I would be willing to donate volunteer hours.
January 4, 2009 at 9:41 pm #653158
HunterGParticipantJiggers…
I can’t really donate much cash, but I can donate services! Graphic Design and Marketing experience – website, campaigns etc…
January 4, 2009 at 9:43 pm #653159
HunterGParticipant—that is of course, if that person happens to lean democrat and has some good ideas for our city.
January 4, 2009 at 9:45 pm #653160
MagpieParticipantI love this grass roots thing…maybe we should start with the logo, “Anyone but Nickels in 2009”?
January 4, 2009 at 10:00 pm #653161
JanSParticipantMagpie…nice slogan…how about you running? ;-)
we could have a huge protest write-in vote, I suppose. We need a visit by the ghost of Charlie Chong to give us some advice, dontcha think?
January 4, 2009 at 10:06 pm #653162
JiggersMemberI AGREE THAT NICKELNECK CAN’T BE IN OFFICE AGAIN. HIS DECISION MAKINGS ARE HORRIBLE, AND HIS LEADERSHIP TO RUN A CITY EFFECTIVELY IS NON-EXISTANT. TRYING TO BE A TREND SETTER IS ONE THING, BUT HAVING NO COMMON SENSE IS ANOTHER RADIO SHOW ALL BY ITSELF.
January 4, 2009 at 10:08 pm #653163
WSBKeymasterWe of course can’t get involved in a political campaign but will certainly be covering whatever happens. Just sent this URL out to Twitter-land, in fact.
However, to Magpie’s point, we should note that any successful business name, campaign name, slogan, should have a matching web address. Registration records show somebody registered
four months ago.
However,
appears to be available.
Domain registration costs all of ten bucks, by the way.
There is a West Seattleite planning to run for City Council, by the way – we reported in late November that Highland Park Action Committee chair Dorsol Plants, who came forward to take that then-empty job when the jail-site issue erupted last spring, is leaving HPAC to run for council.
January 4, 2009 at 10:08 pm #653164
JanSParticipantI know….Jiggers for mayor…let’s get the movement roling…and the Westside will continue to be represented ;-)
January 4, 2009 at 10:20 pm #653165
MagpieParticipantUnfortunatley, I’m up there with BobLawBlaw. There are enough skeletons for their own chorus line…there has to be someone that we can get behind. Does anyone know when the filing dates, etc are or where they can be located?
January 4, 2009 at 11:26 pm #653166
AliceEParticipantJust saw the mention of this posting on Twitter – I am a Capitol Hill denizen, so don’t read this blog often. I am very, very interested in supporting a viable candidate running against Nichols!
January 4, 2009 at 11:29 pm #653167
BobLoblawParticipantLooks like one person is running at this point — David Wolbeck (no contributions to his campaign so far, and no records of who he is yet): http://www2.seattle.gov/ethics/eldata/filings/campaignhome.asp?elcycle=el09a&campuni=153
Primary: August 18, 2009
General: November 3, 2009
Here’s how to run:
January 4, 2009 at 11:38 pm #653168
IrukandjiParticipantWish my husband would do it, but he’s just not the public figure type.
January 5, 2009 at 12:00 am #653169
BobLoblawParticipantLooks like a Facebook group was started mere moments ago.

January 5, 2009 at 12:02 am #653170
MrJTMemberIrukandji – Does your husband know how to talk out of both sides of his mouth ? That seems to be the predominate requirement.
January 5, 2009 at 12:06 am #653171
bcollinsMemberWhat is the point of a Mayor when there is a City Council? I think one reason why we don’t like our Mayor is that he is pretty powerless and what power he does have…is to take silly positions on issues he doesn’t control.
Who was a good mayor?
January 5, 2009 at 12:21 am #653172
elgregoMemberI’ll run. What are the issues I should have opinions on?
January 5, 2009 at 12:27 am #653173
JiggersMemberInstead of trying to be green at the wrong time, use your head and do what’s right to make our city functional Mr.Mayor. He has such an ego trip about being green its pathetic.
January 5, 2009 at 12:36 am #653174
MrJTMemberLet’s write in Charlie Chong. He can do better from the afterlife than what we currently have. This city is so PC, no one would contest the win.
January 5, 2009 at 12:38 am #653175
MagpieParticipantMaybe someone can do a documentary on the un making of a mayor…the last time I did volunteer work for a candidate for city government was Chip Marshall and I think that must have been 1974? I think I might be up for it again, only this time without so many consciousness altering substances.
January 5, 2009 at 12:47 am #653176
BobLoblawParticipantA fair question, for sure, bcollins. Think of it this way though: What is the point of a President if we have Congress and the Supreme Court?
.
Seattle’s mayor plays a critical role in the budget process, emergency management, and future planning (vision). He or she is also the single most important person to build and maintain relationships with officials, businesses, and others outside the community who can benefit the citizens and businesses of his/her community.
.
Seattle is not a world-class city (my opinion only). But it was on its way before Nickels (and Paul Schell) got into office. We have lost more than we’ve gained on many fronts, and continue to be stuck in planning and studying mode.
.
Who was a good mayor? Depends on your meaning of good, of course. Here’s a start:
.
Charles Royer: Three terms, started our nationally-recognized recycling program, named mayor of the year by Urban Coalition in 1989 after Seattle was named both Most Livable and Best Managed, guided us through hardships of the early 1980s.
Norm Rice: Two terms, helped use boom money of the early 90’s to improve downtown, was a leader on the City Council before becoming mayor.
Wes Uhlman: Two terms, helped save Pioneer Square, fought to maintain civil rights for gay and lesbian citizens.
As for Greg, at one time or another he has stood for:
* A tunnel nobody can afford
* Charging 20 cents to use a bag
* Letting a liar cheat the city out of a major sports team (love ’em or hate ’em — we got screwed)
* Letting city streets become impassable during snow, helping to cripple businesses during the largest retail shopping time of the year
* A hodge-podge system of public transit that doesn’t connect
* I could go on …
