Anyone have experience with these? Better or worse than chains? This video is not in English, but it showes how they work on snow.

I haven’t used them, but they look really good, and much easier to put on than chains. I like how they’re attached to the wheel too, so you’re not going to lose them. Here’s the english version of the website, with english videos: http://www.spikes-spiders.com Pricey though, at $500, which a LOT more than the $75 we paid for our chains. However, we never actually use the chains because they’re a pain (we have them for emergencies), where this looks like we’d use them more. Here’s a review I found online for them (from 2008). http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2008/01/spike-spider-winter-traction-package-review/ Definitely sounds like something to consider.

My wife has a Passat wagon we bought new in 2002. It doesn’t have enough tire clearance for chains so I bought spiders and I’ve mounted the plates every year since. Never used them in the snow, though.

Kind of tricky to clamp the plates on the first time – once you’ve adjusted it to fit your wheels it’s easier. I really doubt that they’d survive driving on dry pavement the way people do with chains around here, but if all you need is 100 feet to get out of a driveway they’d work.
