JanSParticipantI always stopped at Morton’s for a burger…and a token for ice cream while you waited for a prescription
January 31, 2011 at 8:47 pm #715663
miwsParticipantCeleste, burger joint where Be’s is was Angelo’s Burgers. I was totally addicted to them!
Jan, I think I still have one of Morton’s wooden nickels stashed away somewhere! :-)

clark5080ParticipantOlympic Heights creamery just south of the old station 37 (now a hair salon) had great burgers and shakes to boot.

pamMemberWe bought the Images of America WestSeattle book at Alki Mail for xmas – it has great Luna Park pix I haven’t seen before. I have two copies of the big West Seattle book that the WS Herald did back in the 80’s – they are always at garage sales for a buck or two and a great reference for what was…
I forgot about so many of these places. Really wish JCPenny was still here too – and so many of the other places.

MBParticipantMy mouth is watering thinking about Groucho’s!! Who knows if it was even that good, but in my childhood memory, it was fantastic!!
February 1, 2011 at 2:19 am #715667
ZenguyParticipantYep, WS Nursery and Jack in the Box used to be Herfy’s…loved to get a napkin and pile it up with pickles as my appetizer. I remember several 5 and dimes…seriously, 5 and dimes, the Wells Fargo on Cali and Admiral, one across the street to the South that used to say Drugs in neon and then went to Rugs when it was Besaw, there was one to the North owned by two old crusty sisters. Meridiths in the Alaska junction that is now Arts West.
Shakey’s used to show cartoons and silent movies, you could watch them make pizzas, chicken and mojo’s…gawd I am old!

cclarueMemberOk what about the things we used to do for fun?mine would be riding bikes to ww villiage to get 1 or 2 plain old fashioned donuts. My bf on the otherhand would ride bikes with his cousins all over Ws and their favorite prank in the summer would be to ride in the backdoor and out the front door of JC penneys!! While that is so out of line and obnoxious it makes me laugh a little. What little heathens!!! The funny thing is now he’s a store owner!!

GinaParticipantzenguy–The N&N store across the street from the Admiral Theater, where everyone under the age of 40 was given the evil eye by the two owner ladies. And always a display of giant ladie’s bullet proof nylon underpants in one of the windows. I think they sold candy at double the price to discourage kids from coming in before the movies!
February 1, 2011 at 9:42 pm #715672
ZenguyParticipantWe used to live directly behind the Admiral, it was terrible smelling the popcorn every night. We used to go in just to buy some. There was a dirt lot North of the Admiral, my brother and I would take our Tonka trucks and build cities. We would hike the greenbelt and build forts. We played soccer every year, the Lucas Lions and the something Hammers I think.

bebecatMemberOh Zenguy…My mother would always stop at the Admiral Theatre and make me or my brother run in and get her the big tub of popcorn to go! And when we would go to the movie I swear she never went home after dropping us off as she was always right out in front sitting in the car eating popcorn when the movie was over! Thank you for the fond memory!

pamMemberWhite Center so not “West Seattle” but we’d play at Astro Land where the little league ballfields are now – towards the back.
Being able to have snow ball fights at Arbor Heights Elem – they’d spraypaint a line across the playfield for the throwers. Fun.

dawsonctParticipantMan, I miss Mr. Ed’s! You could get stuffed and fueled up on coffee for about $10, and that would last you all day. Good, basic diner food.
Mike, from your description it does sound like it was Nifty’s that my Dad took us too. He has always had an affinity for those out of the way, or the hole-in-the-wall type restaurants. It made for a lot of interesting dining experiences for this rather finicky young eater.
February 3, 2011 at 5:10 pm #715677
ZenguyParticipantWe would always go to Dairyqueen and then Astroland, a very fond memory. and whenever we went past the hat and boots…amazingly we had to go to the bathroom. No idea why.
February 3, 2011 at 8:53 pm #715678
miwsParticipantI remember the good ol’ days when Zenguy lived in West Seattle.
Now I see from a posting on another thread, that he lives in Texas?!?
Did I miss, or forget, a previous announcement of such?
Mike
February 3, 2011 at 9:06 pm #715679
JanSParticipantMike…he went to Florida..and now Texas..but I get the feeling that he misses us :)
February 3, 2011 at 10:29 pm #715680
ZenguyParticipantNo MIWS, it was not exactly something I was proud of or excited to announce. Sadly, I am in the DFW, Dallas/Fort Worth…more Fort Worth area. I am here for Family and jobs. I miss Seattle sooooooooooooooo much x infinity. I will always feel my connection there. My family has been in Seattle since the 1860’s and in WS since the 30’s, I am…as they say “died in the wool”.
February 4, 2011 at 1:06 am #715681
dawsonctParticipantNothing quite like nearly 6000 sq. mi. of sprawling Texass humanity.
I hope you are being WELL compensated.
February 4, 2011 at 1:15 am #715682
ZenguyParticipantAnd I can see all 6000 sq mi from my balcony.
February 4, 2011 at 1:15 am #715683
ZenguyParticipantYet I have no cell reception.
February 4, 2011 at 1:44 am #715684
Genesee HillParticipantDoes anyone remember when you could ride a trolley (streetcar) from downtown Seattle on a wood trestle across the Duwamish River, up Avalon, to the Alaska Junction?
My neighbor can!
February 4, 2011 at 5:54 am #715685
GinaParticipantMy late mother remembered riding the ferry to visit her aunt in West Seattle, and riding a merry go round at Luna Park. And then she moved to Snohomish county, ending her West Seattle experience until 1939.
February 4, 2011 at 6:21 am #715686
HomerParticipantI’ve been trying to resist but can’t. Every time I read the title of this post, I swear this establishment reads more like a bad venereal disease…..okay, that’s it.
