Homer–during my teen years Herfy’s was nicknamed Herpes. Dag’s was gag with Dag’s, Hack at The Shack. And the nicknames for Dick’s food–won’t go there!

    Zenguy:

Yeah, that’s neat. A lot of people in that age group remember some really neat stuff. Unfortunately, many of them don’t use the internet much, if at all, and thus, don’t read and contribute to these blogs. We miss out on many really old memories.

Yep, she has never used a computer and grew up in a culture that discourages talking aboout things. Her great grandparents came here on a boat, set up shop selling Irish linens, some other relative owned a grocery down in Tukwila. They lived in a big house on First Hill, had servants and a car in the depression (she did not know everyone else didn’t) and used to spend the summers at a camp in Normandy Park. I love listening to her stories when she wants to share. I am blessed to still have her in my life.

Gina, I remember working at the Sambo’s and calling it “Crambo’s”. My best friend cooked there at a mere 18 years old, and also at the Hungry Man Cafe, my fondest memories were of their witty little signs and business cards everywhere (Hungry Man was a few doors south of the 7-11 at the Junction).

Also: Olsen’s drugs originally occupied the entire building where Abbondanza and Starbucks live (Morgan junction). I recall going there as a child when McDonald’s was a swampy vacant lot kitty-corner from my Grandpa’s shop, A-Advanced TV (where the Pet Elements now resides)…

I remember all of that too, nice to be reminded…lol. People used to actually repair tv’s. Remember the tv tube stands in the grocery store? I remember the one in Lucky’s (Metropolitan Market).

Many memories of the Alki IGA located where Cactus is now. Lots of allowance spent on candy there.

Also, I miss those closing-time stops by Taco Time and Spuds for the free food bag from friends. Nothing like a bag of mexifries in one hand and bag of soft tacos in the other when you are 16. Miss it but my belly doesn’t need it anymore.

Wow, you reminded me of Mac’s grocery, it is where the women’s work-out place was across from Spiro’s. We used to be able to buy “penny” candy, seriously…penny candy! There was also a place in the Alaska Junction by Husky, I think it is the Puerta Vallarta now that used to be a fish monger on one side and a butcher on the other. They had sawdust on the floor and we used to buy irregular hotdogs, ie not big enough cuz we wuz poo’. Oh, and do not forget Joe Banana’s Pizza Parlor, Now Subway.

Zenguy, the fish market and meat market were where Tacqueria Guaymas is now. And before Joe Banana’s was in the Subway space, in the Morgan Junction, it was a few doors north of Mac’s.

Used to walk by Mac’s most everyday to and from Lafayette. They had a big, metal, 7-UP® sign, (later replaced by one painted directly on the concrete wall alongside of the building. We (friends, Brother, and I) used to smack the metal sign with our hand, and exclaim “Blecchhh! 7-UP®!

Also, when my Brother turned 13, or so, Lew Daughters, the guy who ran the store, (and IIRC, had actually bought the business from Mac, whom I don’t recall ever knowing) hired him to sweep the floors, clean up the meat cutting are and such. I remember my Brother teasing Lew about his bald head.

sydney, back when I moved out on my own, in 1978, I lived right across from Hungry Man’s, above then Venable & Wing’s, now for many years, Barnecut’s Law Offices. Lived in that little place for seven years, and went to Hungry Man’s only occasionally. Liked it well enough, but maybe it was just too close to go there all the time! ;-)

And how cool that your Grandpa owned A-Advanced! I remember before it being at the Pet Elements spot, it was at two different locations in the Junction; one was where Super Sup now is, the other where, or near where, Easy Street Cafe now is. I always have trouble remembering which of those two spaces it was in first.

Mike, I remember Joe Banana’s at that location North of Mac’s which was a vacuum shop for a while. Really good memories and the crust.

    Wasn’t Godfathers/Luckys(?)/Ovio/Ama Ama/Table35 once a Payless Shoes?

yeah-me, Volume/Payless Shoesource was in the spot where the Thai place is, next door to the north of T35. That was back in the Godfather’s days.

Previous to that, those two spaces were one large one, and it housed Carlisle Furniture.

Anybody remember the Red Goose shoe store in the Alaska Junction…I think it is Funky Janes or something like that. There is actually a bar here that still has a Red Goose sign…awesome.

Was the Red Goose place run by someone with Barney in his name? I always wanted to get shoes there because of the golden plastic eggs they gave out, and the free passes to “Uncle Barney’s back to school matinee” at the Admiral.

Yeah, vague memories of Red Goose, and I think it was “Uncle” Barney.

Also, Raff’s Shoes, in what is now part of Next to Nature-the part that was occupied by the Hallmark Store for so many years.

I used to enjoy going into Raff’s, and playing with the electric shoe buffing machine! :-)

Just another quick walk down memory lane…before Taco Time, Shakey’s on 35th and , there was Gil’s Drive In…I worked there 1968/69…good times in WS @ that time. 25 cent burgers, 29 cent cheese burgers, and 25 cent shakes. Those were the days(I can’t believe I just said that) I don’t feel THAT old.

I remember Gil’s from early on when they had the “Gil’s 49er” burger, fries and milkshake for $0.49. That was the late 50’s early 60’s. Also before Joe’s Grill there was a Donut shop in that location. I worked there in 1971-72 I believe. HaHa I can’t remember the name!! West Seattle Bingo was short lived as the owners did things that were wrong in the eyes of the Gaming Commission.
