RAVE to the motorists who stop for people in crosswalks

Thank goodness there are motorists in W.Sea. who pay attention to pedestrians!

Kudos’s to you all and my apologies if ever I’m not overly observant and miss a walker waiting to cross a street.

I had to cross California yesterday at around 7:50 down by Swedish. Yikes, I figured it must be parents dropping off their kids at Madison..I waited for about 20 cars to stop and I had stepped off the curb and was in a crosswalk. Then I had to walk the gauntlet of cars turning off California and on to California. No one seemed to want to stop for me, especially the ones coming off of California and turning left. That was the first time anything like that has happened to me. Generally, someone stops almost immediately. Bad example for their kids. I usually cross California a couple of times a day and have no problem. The only time I have had a problem is around the time that school starts.

It seems to be the exception rather than the rule, but sometimes cars do stop for pedestrians. Usually you have to be in the middle of the crosswalk, arms waving, but they’ll do it if it means you’ll dent their hood otherwise. Usually. There was one guy, about a week ago, who I watched waiting at a stop sign on his cell phone for about a minute and despite the lack on oncoming traffic he waited for me to enter the well marked crosswalk before he decided to abruptly gas at me, then slam on the brakes startled as if WTF is a person doing in the road! And how did he come out of Nowhere like that! It’s because when your head is crammed that far up your butt it begins to affect your peripheral vision, cell phone guy in the blue pt cruiser. And yeah, get that spacey stare in your eyes while you’re pretending I’m not gesturing and shouting at you, that’s probably a good sign you’re going to be paying attention in the future.

My rule of thumb is to always stop for pedestrians on two lane roads but not 4 lane roads. I’ve tried that a few times to bad effect: there’s always some driver that’ll come flying by in the other lane and nearly cream the pedestrian. I don’t want to be the one who helpfully gets someone killed. In 4 lane roads it is better for the peds to wait for no traffic.

Yes! Studies show that drivers who stop for pedestrians are sexy!!! I just wish there were more of them. :)

I am very grateful for cars that stop for pedestrians. It’s getting harder to find them lately – I was trying to cross California down near Illusions the other day after dark so I could get the bus home, and waited a considerable amount of time until someone saw me – even though I had a flashlight with me and was waving it! Yesterday at Bartell I bought one of these Glow Sticks: http://www.lifegearcompany.com/glowsticks.html – hopefully it’ll make me a little more visible before I have to resort to covering myself with flashing christmas lights. :)
