TheHouseMemberVincent, that was a pathetic attempt to find hypocrisy where there isn’t any.
Thanks, Jan for pointing out that this is a simple issue of illegal activity. If you watch these people, they play the system well. And I don’t feel that calling a TV station is the way to go. This is a matter for law enforcement.

gambaruParticipantIt is kind of funny that we rely on the News to “keep us honest” in the community.

AnonymousInactiveThis is quite a problem in the Genesee/Admiral area. The city doesn’t do jack even when there are obvious examples like the dodge dart or whatever model it is that has been parked on the parking strip across from Madison Middle School for months. There is a rust bucket old SUV that hasn’t moved since I first noticed it in August of 07 at a house across from Schmitz Park Elementary. It’s also parked on the wrong side of the street and there are other vehicles at this address that are parked illegally (wrong side of the street, closer that 30 feet from a stop sign, parked within 5 feet of a drive way, blocking a drive way, haven’t moved in 72 hours, etc. It’s is frustrating to try to be proactive about maintaining or increasing the intergity of the neighborhood only to have people like this skirt the law. If you want to park your car on your lawn or never move it or it’s broken down etc, I bet there are a few of us who could suggest another neighborhood you would be more comfortable “living” in.

GenHillOneParticipantI’m surprised (tho maybe I shouldn’t be) by the inconsistant response to these vehicles by the police. We go through cycles every six months or so where cars are left in our neighborhood, probably because we’re not far from California. I keep a pen and paper in my car to jot down license plates if we notice that something has been sitting. It takes just a second and I can do it on my way to work. Then at the eh, 65-hour mark, we report it online and keep reporting it every day until something happens. I don’t feel bad about jumping the gun a bit because a) I’m sure we didn’t see the vehicle in its first hour and b) it’s going to be a few hours before my report is read and someone comes out to check. I always include extra info in the notes field too – like “now we’re up to 5 days, when is someone coming out?” or “pedestrian safety is compromised because of impaired visibility.” We’ve been very successful with the orange stickers and/or tows. As I say, it starts back up again, but the neighbors try to stay on top of it.
House, agreed. I only suggested the news because it sounds like you and flowerpetal, and probably others, HAVE been reporting this eyesore and law enforcement is not working. It’s especially interesting that this guy might be bypassing the system via his towing business.
June 3, 2008 at 4:44 pm #625784
JimmyGMemberFYI: It’s not Seattle cops that handle enforcement of abandoned cars for 72 hour violations, it is Parking Enforcement Officers. A very different group of employees and NOT cops.

GenHillOneParticipantOkay then, however you want to slice it; here’s the online reporting link if anyone needs it –
June 3, 2008 at 5:32 pm #625786
flowerpetalMemberI believe that the City Parking Enforcement officers feel that they have done what they can. The vehicles are moved after the orange sticker appears. Therefor they side step the tow away; and rest comfortably until a new orange sticker appears.
Don’t know if anyone remembers; about two years ago there was (in the same block of Trenton) an old motor boat on a trailer hitched to an equally rusty old truck. Same story; sat there until it was stickered and then moved a few spaces. Until an unfortunate incident. A lady not paying close enough attention to her driving, ran into the rear left corner of the boat and trailer. Her Honda was destroyed; the boat and trailer damaged and the truck barely budged. The boat and trailer were towed off and the truck continued to sit in the neighborhood for months more. Its a given that her driving was in error; but troubling just the same that her insurance had to pay for damages to boat and trailer. And need I mention? The boat, trailer and p.u. belonged to the same low life who keeps tabs on the mobile home and the pick-up now parked on 29th just south of Barton. This guy’s a gem! His flatbed tow truck is chartreuse and I am keeping my camera at hand for a picture of it.

GenHillOneParticipantHave you tried the 80″ rule route (no parking between midnight and 6am)? I doubt Trenton is zoned industrial or manufacturing. Says you can report this violation to non-emergency number rather than abandoned vehicle hotline/web site.

AnonymousInactiveI worry about someone trying to get revenge on people who report them. There is something on the online report that says it is or could be public information. Anyone else concerned?
June 3, 2008 at 7:02 pm #625789
charlabobParticipantSeems like knowing who reported you might come under the right to face your accuser :-)
June 3, 2008 at 7:12 pm #625790
AnonymousInactiveThat is why I don’t do it. Even though it is set up as an anonymous thing, it’s not worth the risk in this day and age. Road rage, passive aggressive folks, etc. In theory, I could be in the right, reporting someone who is breaking the law but they could egg my house, key my car or worse and I would have no recourse. It’s probably why people rarely want to “get involved.”
June 3, 2008 at 7:14 pm #625791
AnonymousInactiveI think the 6th Amendment is a good thing, don’t get me wrong folks. :)
June 3, 2008 at 8:08 pm #625792
JimmyGMemberPeople, read the online reporting form.
You don’t need to leave your contact information to report abandoned vehicles, it can be done anonymously. That section is only if you want feedback.
Or if you’re really chicken and think they can track you through your computer call the abandoned car phone # at 684.8763.
June 3, 2008 at 8:10 pm #625793
JimmyGMemberAnd there is no requirement that you’re allowed to “face your accuser” on what is a civil matter.
The 6th amendment only applies to criminal prosecutions.
June 3, 2008 at 8:22 pm #625794
hopeyParticipantre: chartreuse flatbed tow truck
You mean the one which is often parked on 98th immediately west of 35th, in front of the most run-down eyesore house on that block?
June 3, 2008 at 8:23 pm #625795
charlabobParticipantThanks for the clarification, JimmyG!
June 3, 2008 at 8:24 pm #625796
flowerpetalMemberI’ve noticed that little disclaimer on the online reporting page and only found it interesting. Sure wsblover, what you say could happen; but I’m not going to be intimidated by fear of reprisal. I do respect your right not to report though. I have always left my name and contact information but have not once heard back; even when I specifically ask to.
June 3, 2008 at 10:09 pm #625797
AnonymousInactiveChicken? I know I do not have to leave contact info. There is a disclaimer that certain info could be released in the future. An IP address can be tied to an individual. Calling the number is a good idea but this can be traced as well unless I call from a pay phone. I’m not one of those people that is paranoid of government or anything like that. I just like to think I am conducting myself in a smart way. The fact that reporting the vehicle just reminds the owner to move it a block and start all over again is not very motivating.
June 3, 2008 at 10:33 pm #625798
vincentMemberHouse: Its a amusing attempt to show hypocrisy.
You seem to be advocating the nanny state cart away a piece of private property on public land because they are leaving it out past the 72 hour rule. Which reminded me of the recent conflict at volunteer park where the neighbors were complaining about the noise from drums during the day.
So if they move it every 71 hours thats fine? so worst case is you get a 72 hour vacation from seeing it every once and awhile. best case is you get someone else’s stuff carted away to impound because you decided it was ugly.
I agree they seem to be playing the system and its obviously annoying, ( and I am sure its ugly) but as the self described conservative you should be a little more open to criticism than to cut straight to insults, especially on the internet.
ps jan: if I was shooting for flames it would be far more colorful of a post and would probably include language like a**hat and the occasional ad hominem attack. I actually look forward to comparing notes with house at the pub on subjects such as creative tax write offs and the best shot shells for home defense.
June 3, 2008 at 11:19 pm #625799
AnonymousInactiveWell, I hope you come then, vincent, to the next get together so you can meet House.
He is very engaging and a pleasure to hang out with.
(Of course, we agree on a lot of things, but….)
June 3, 2008 at 11:34 pm #625800
TheHouseMemberThis isn’t worth debating Vincent. It’s against the law. Sure, I would love to simply handle the situation myself and torch the damn thing, but then I’m in the wrong. I also notated in my original post that I haven’t been vigilant on calling after 72 hours, I’ve waited as long as 10 days.
I’d honestly have to say that this is a nonpartisan issue!
June 4, 2008 at 5:26 am #625801
flowerpetalMemberThanks hopey! I will swing by there tomorrow to see if that is the same truck. That would be great to know about!
