We got this a few days ago and I didn’t want to hang onto it without sharing it:

    Dear Editor,

We are West Seattle parents of preschoolers who were inspired by President Obama’s

national call to service. We were having difficulty, however, finding volunteer

opportunities that could accommodate our young children. So we rounded up our

friends, found some willing community partners, and a new organization was born!

Our mission is to raise a new generation for whom active service to community is a

part of life. We aim to introduce children to community service in fun and friendly

ways. We plan service events that are lively, safe and appropriate for young

children. We provide parents with an opportunity to meet other parents in their

neighborhood while actively contributing to their community. We also serve as a

clearinghouse for child-friendly community service events throughout Seattle.

We ask that you please visit our website at

http://www.ohmamas.org<http://www.ohmamas.org/>, and help spread the word! Your readers

should feel free to sign up for posted events, but also to suggest and plan other

    appropriate events.

Thank you very much for your help!

    Sincerely,

    Heather McKey and Janel Lardizabal

oh that’s so wonderful- thanks for sharing!

for someone with a recent family addition, and working full time, I’ve been frustrated about the lack of opportunities to volunteer. You don’t want to spend your free time away from the little one, and some things (like neighborhood and Longfellow creek clean-ups) are a little difficult with a baby strapped to you or a little toddler running around.

FABULOUS IDEA!! I am in charge of the community outreach team at work as well as volunteering on my own. I agree it is very hard to find opportunities that are practical for parents and are opportunities for kids to start teaching philanthropy early. I do hope you might consider editing your site to say “Parents” instead of just “Moms” – I know a few stay-at-home Dads who would love to feel welcome too – but I will definitely help promote your website! :)

I agree this is a great idea! I had trouble with the link in the original post though- it didn’t work. I’d love to find out more information about volunteer oppurtunities though.
