Alki WarriorParticipantI’m confused. Is it alright to smoke weed in public? I went to downtown to get a wedding gift at Nordstrom’s for a friend and saw a group of young men standing by McDonald’s toking it up like no one cared. The funny thing was before I turned the corner, I could smell it before I saw them. I’m guessing its okay then?

clark5080ParticipantI don’t believe it is ok

skeeterParticipantIs it alright to smoke weed in public?
Yes.
Is it legal to smoke weed in public?
No.
There is a great deal of marijuana smoking in Seattle Parks. I really hate it.
June 12, 2014 at 8:18 pm #809573
leamkParticipantNot legal, but I think the cops treat it as a pretty low priority. Not a huge fan of public weed smoking, especially if I have my daughter with me, but I’d rather the cops spend their time dealing with bigger issues.

LindseyParticipantI work downtown and I can assure you that there was plenty of public weed smoking before I502.
June 12, 2014 at 8:25 pm #809575
waterworldParticipantUnder I-502 and, now, RCW 69.50.445, it is a civil infraction to consume marijuana in public. A violation of the law is a class 3 civil infraction under RCS 7.80. Civil infractions are non-criminal, similar to traffic infractions. The penalty for a class 3 civil infraction is $50 — less than a typical parking ticket.
In addition, back in 2003, Seattle voters passed Initiative 75, which directed SPD and the City Attorney to make arrest and prosecution for personal use of marijuana the “lowest law enforcement priority.”

wakefloodParticipantAs for one’s children being exposed to something publicly, I’m more concerned about the geniuses who think that a displayed firearm somehow is a positive example of…anything.
June 12, 2014 at 8:56 pm #809577
JanSParticipantI live in a no smoking bldg. However, one cannot smoke MJ in public (outside), so neighbor downstairs smokes inside…often a delightful skunk smell in hallway, bedroom (he imbibes in his bedroom, I;m thinking). He works later till past midnite, and I sometimes wake up wondering if I’m going to get a contact high :-
June 12, 2014 at 9:01 pm #809578
Alki WarriorParticipantPeople who smoke weed don’t care if you breathe it in. In fact, marijuana smokers laugh knowing you can smell it blocks away.
June 12, 2014 at 10:24 pm #809579
JeanineParticipantMy,that’s quite a big generalization you have there, Alki Warrior.
June 12, 2014 at 11:07 pm #809580
JanSParticipantAnd just to make my stance clear. I do not care if the guy downstairs smokes or not. I have a Med. MJ card (chemo twice, and pain)…I have smoked in the past, but not currently(and I’m 67 – lol..ooh..TMI ! ). I choose to not inhale anything that puts out smoke(transplant clinic prefers me to not smoke, too). But edibles? Now there you have something. And I promise you AW, I do none of it to laugh at anyone “blocks away” that may or may not smell it. Besides, there’s a nice breeze today.
June 13, 2014 at 4:32 am #809581
datamuseParticipantThey’re laughing because when you’re stoned everything is HILARIOUS.
June 13, 2014 at 6:42 pm #809582
Alki WarriorParticipantWent to QFC last night turned the corner and took in a big whiff of pot. Didn’t see anyone around though. That stench can be smelled for blocks away.

happywalkerParticipantF16, it’s “Everybody must get stoned.”
June 14, 2014 at 1:37 pm #809586
andisizzleParticipantUgh. I work for a store in the Pike Place Market, and we are constantly shooing people away from our back door area. That smell hotboxes our store. The other day we had a lovely gentleman sitting on a bench, divvying up baggies of weed from a huge backpack like it was nothing.
I get that people who imbibe are excited and I am happy marijuana has been legalized. I am a former smoker myself. However, I’m getting tired of people thinking that everyone else is just as excited. The majority of people I encounter five days a week are just as annoyed as me and my coworkers. It’s no different from drinking alcohol in public: it’s just as rude and a hell of a lot more stinky. If you absolutely must be stoned in public, eat a brownie.
June 14, 2014 at 6:39 pm #809587
JanSParticipantyes…eat a brownie….yummm
andisizzle…you are shooing them away…are you reporting the illegal outdoor smoking to SPD?
June 14, 2014 at 11:09 pm #809588
andisizzleParticipantNope. We call Market Security to deal with the troublesome ones, just like we do the drunks. We’d never get any help if we relied on SPD for every incident.
June 16, 2014 at 10:48 pm #809589
Willie MurderfaceParticipantEver since they legalized barbecueing, my neighborhood has been polluted with the horrible smell of gas and burning flesh.
Go ahead. Keep looking at me like I’m crazy.
June 16, 2014 at 11:19 pm #809590
JanSParticipantlol @ Willie :D
June 17, 2014 at 5:54 pm #809591
cwitParticipantIn fact, Willie, those neighbors are laughing knowing you can smell the BBQing from blocks away.
June 17, 2014 at 7:51 pm #809592
datamuseParticipantI smelled BBQ during my run yesterday evening. Made me hungry.
