JoBParticipantI am going to start with the President..
because.. well.. he is the president
and his stuff is more subtle..
some of it takes a little thinking to appreciate
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw5pJ8wG5JM
the raw footage is funnier but i got some kind of security warning so i didn’t link to that here…
and here’s Mitt who is about as subtle as a sledge hammer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIHbe-aO6oI
after you stop laughing..because some of this is pretty funny.. i want you to ask yourself what the content choices each man made say about who he would be as your next president.
October 19, 2012 at 5:33 pm #774290
JoBParticipantI find what people find funny very telling about what they think is important and how they view their place in the world.
I won’t go so far as to call Mitt a bully..
but i will point out that he is really really good at making fun of others.
and his closing statements were pretty much all about him and what he could do for us
while Obama’s were about working together to solve this country’s problems..
those things matter to me
October 19, 2012 at 5:46 pm #774291
DBPMemberThanks, Jo. We needed some humor.
I will watch these videos, but first let me ask you why you think MR is a bully. Is there something in these videos that particularly makes you think so? If so, I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

JoBParticipantDBP..
i said (based on those videos) I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a bully..
but as his video clearly shows, his humor is most effective when making fun of someone or something else…
for fun.. count the number of times he uses this as an opportunity to make fun of Obama… or the left.. or Joe Biden for that matter
then go back and count the number of times Obama does the same.
i will admit.. there is some grey area..
Obama does poke fun at Mitt poking fun at him by poking fun at himself…
but still..
I found the Mitt video courtesy of one of my rabidly right wing family members.. who in the interests of fairness watched both videos.
she didn’t link to Obama’s. I had to find that for myself.
The difference in styles was so notable that her comment about Obama’s video was that he sure was good at making fun of himself…
then she added that he had a lot to make fun of himself for.
i would counter that Mitt does too
he just hasn’t seemed to figure that out yet.
I am prejudiced though
humility is one of the first characteristics i look for in a man …
even when he is only going to be my President

DBPMemberSorry, Jo. My bad. I didn’t read your post as carefully as I should have before responding.
Neither one of these guys should quit their day jobs, but jeez, you were right about Romney. He started out fine, but a few minutes in and he goes hard core. This was NOT appropriate for the venue.
I agree with your other point as well. Whereas Obama made most of his wisecracks about himself and his policies, Romney’s were mostly put-downs and cheap shots that appeared to be calculated for political gain, not laffs. Ugh. I couldn’t even watch after the halfway mark.
Apparently Romney’s really mad at the President, and this I do not get. With a couple hundred mils, you’d think the guy could find something to distract himself.
I dunno. Maybe he should start drinking.
Worked for me.

clark5080ParticipantJust watched both some funny moments in both but my guess is that neither of them actually had anything to do with writing the monologue’s. Probably had a comedy writer in on it for both of them
October 19, 2012 at 7:25 pm #774295
SonomaParticipantOh, I thought you meant THIS bullying! And no need to go on about how we all did stupid things in high school. Stupid is not the same as outright cruel.
He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.
A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.”

SmittyParticipantThese guys are talented. Do they not manipulate their lips? Funny stuff.
October 19, 2012 at 9:43 pm #774297
miwsParticipantJoB is spot on.
Obama’s humor was more self-deprecating, Romney acted like the event was a full on roast of Obama.
and his closing statements were pretty much all about him and what he could do for us
while Obama’s were about working together to solve this country’s problems..
Between the time I first read this thread earlier today, and watching the vids now, I had forgotten about JoB’s above observation.
Funny thing is, while listening to Obama’s closing statement, the part about working together really stood out to me, as well, and I wondered if Romney’s closing statement would have a similar tone.
It didn’t. And that was absolutely no surprise.

kootchmanMemberHe should be self deprecating….he deserves every syllable. “I can fill AF-1 with secret service agents, air force personell, clear and secure air space… make local cops clear the way to my Vegas fund raiser.. ha ha ha ha … but turn down the American ambassadors request for a security team for an embassy that was attacked 3 times, where the Brits pulled out their diplomatic core… as too dangerous,.. ha ha ha…. but I forget the guy.. old whats his name .. in Libya… name escapes me … ha ha ha…
Self deprecating humor… yea

dobroParticipantThe closer we get to the election I notice the wingers get a little more testy, a little more touchy…think they might be feeling like its going down the tubes for them? We’ll know soon, but I’m predicting sadness for them, post election day.
October 19, 2012 at 10:36 pm #774300
miwsParticipantI think you’re onto something there, dobro…
He should be self deprecating….he deserves every syllable.
As I was typing my above comment, the thought crossed my mind that you might try to spin that part of the comment in such a manner.
For doing so, no kitteh picture for YOU in this post!

NFiorentiniMemberMiWS-I watched both videos and came here to talk about self-deprecating humor. I use it in my own life and, recently, I’ve been told by someone very close to me that others find it to be a sign of weakness and insecurity.
I’ve never heard that self-deprecating humor was to be avoided. As someone who grew up down South, I don’t understand…is self-deprecating humor viewed up here as something to be avoided?
Sidenote: Take a stopwatch and clock the time each candidate is looking at their notes. Rmoney has an inability to deliver a humorous line from memory. Of course, neither Obama nor Rmoney wrote these one liners themselves, but Rmoney’s brain works much slower in the processing of information.
October 19, 2012 at 11:13 pm #774302
miwsParticipantNFiorentini, I’ve always thought of it as being a sign of humbleness, and certainly nothing that should be avoided.

JoBParticipantLol DBP..
yes, Mitt is angry
Obama crossed the line in the second debate
he made Romney look bad
he’s not accustomed to that…
that’s what hiring too many yes men while doing debate prep will get you…
a real knockdown when you have to deal with the real thing
we will see if he learns as much from this debate as Obama did from the last.
nobody wants a slow learner for President

JoBParticipantsonoma..
yes, well, he does have that history
and he does exhibit many of the characteristic traits..

but I forget the guy.. old whats his name .. in Libya… name escapes me …
who? the u.s. diplomat? chris stevens? put there by obama?
i’m pretty sure the president is not making jokes about chris stevens.
or did you mean this guy, the one obama helped to overthrow with air strikes that all you war mongers decried?

kootchmanMemberThe political sacrificial lamb, Chris Stevens…. y;know the “not optimal” outcome. Was that self deprecating humor… it went over well with the families.

JoBParticipantkootch..
shame on you.
“The political sacrificial lamb, Chris Stevens…. y;know the “not optimal” outcome. Was that self deprecating humor… it went over well with the families. “
Capitalizing on Chris Stevens death by using it as a political talking point is shameful.
I don’t care how many times this one is repeated on FAUX airwaves..
this is NOT acceptable behavior.

JoBParticipantNFiorentini,
How time twists things..
These days you have to thump your chest and dance around like an orangutan to be considered confident.
the ability to successfully make fun of yourself was once considered the high mark of a person of confidence…
after all, only one who understands and has come to terms with their failings can successfully poke fun at themselves.
everyone else is just baying at the moon and avoiding anything resembling a mirror.
October 24, 2012 at 1:47 pm #774309
miwsParticipantI think this quote loosely relates to the “self-deprecating humor is a sign of weakness” comment:
The worst kind of people are those who confuse kindness for weakness. -Werner Makowski, banker (b. 1929)

SpodieMemberThe political sacrificial lamb, Chris Stevens…. y;know the “not optimal” outcome. Was that self deprecating humor… it went over well with the families.
The spin machine had McCain out there before the out of context soundbite even aired. It was funny to watch. He seems so disgusted with himself, he can’t even summon up the fake outrage while he reads his master’s talking points script.
Reality:
The ease at which people are controlled by fake outrage and fear is enough to provide fodder for a four-day a week comedy show. That’s how big of a joke people who are completely uninterested in facts are.
Here’s another fact since you’re so concerned how your manufactured controversy went over with the family:
“It would really be abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue.” Jan Stevens
“It’s wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama.” – Barbara Doherty
October 24, 2012 at 9:32 pm #774311
NFiorentiniMemberThanks for posting that, Spodie.
It’s sad to see such a large percentage of the voting population get taken in by America’s thriving manufactured outrage industry.
Too many people voting next month actually believe stories about the President being born in Kenya or allegedly apologizing for America, that he actually told business leaders, “you didn’t build that,” referring to their businesses,”death panels,” etc., etc., etc.
I wish that my country’s critical thinking skills were much better. We’re awfully good at jumping to conclusions and just plain awful in fact checking, due diligence, and not forming an opinion until we have as much evidence as possible.
October 24, 2012 at 10:58 pm #774312
kootchmanMemberPoor self deprecating Obama… the man with the press in the bag,..his water carriers. Now we have some interesting reveals. Sorry JoB.. it was politics that killed our ambassador. sorry it happened but that is what he did. So desperate to spin Libya as his stand off success. He White House has lied, his Sec of State, his UN Ambassador, his press secretary spun this story and got caught. We get “taken in” ? I think not. Over the top is spinning the American Public for weeks… counting on press complicity his four year ally. We won’t get the evidence.. not if Obama can help it. I am reading the cables, and comparing them to the “party line”.. I have listened to the sworn testimony of the RSO.. a career officer not a politcal appointee.. and why are all these cables and communication appearing? Because the Department of State is not going to be an extension ofd the political White House. They were thrown under the bus. Your outrage should be at the White House and the President. They are lying to us.
“Speaking from her home in San Diego, Mrs Smith, 72, continued: ‘It’s insensitive to say my son is not very optimal – he is also very dead. I’ve not been “optimal” since he died and the past few weeks have been pure hell. “

kootchmanMemberRight … Suezmax is a small tanker. There ya go NF… good start. One sunk ship in the transit before the Bitters Lake que closes the canal for over a year. Too small, too insecure. Suexmax is a transfer tanker… taking cargo from a super tanker in increments. AND… the angle of repose on either bank, has an engineering relationship to the depth. To deepen the canal, to allow super tanker passage means… yes you will have to widen the canal.
The current channel depth of the canal allows for a maximum of 20.1 m (66 ft) of draft,[1] meaning a few fully laden supertankers are too deep to fit through, and either have to unload part of their cargo to other ships (“transhipment”) or to a pipeline terminal before passing through, or alternatively avoid the Suez Canal and travel around Cape Agulhas instead.
Almost 35,000 ships transited the Suez Canal in 2009, of which about 10 percent were petroleum tankers. With only 1,000 feet at its narrowest point, the Canal is unable to handle the VLCC (Very Large Crude Carriers) and ULCC (Ultra Large Crude Carriers) class crude oil tankers.
But to the point…. strategically, Iran is better served with a seaport and a tank farm on the Med coast. Supplied by a trans Syria pipeline.
