charlabobParticipantAdd the charlabob to the list of soclwrkrinmotn fans. We’ll start collecting gift cards with our spare change — good idea, JoB — gradual is much less painful.
This year we’re not giving presents or sending snail cards — we don’t need more stuff and neither do our friends or family. We’ve asked people who would give to us to donate — to be creative with their time — and to just love each other.
G-d, I’m back to being a sixties hippie chick. You’ll recognize me on the 14th — the old broad in the wispy flowing dress, ankle bells, and tattered sandals. :-)

JanSParticipantyay for hippie chicks !!!

December 1, 2008 at 8:07 pm #647954
JoBParticipantand the old hippy community lives on ;))))
and no.. that wasn’t a misspelling.. though i keep hoping to regain that girlish figure:)
December 1, 2008 at 8:15 pm #647955
remjonesParticipantSounds great! Hopefully we’ll be able to make an event finally. Thanks for getting this set up.
December 1, 2008 at 9:25 pm #647956
RSMemberHi all,
This is looking great!! I’m all about the WC food bank and helping SocketWrench’s families. especially if he shows up in a Santa hat!!
By the way, if people are looking for other “presents” and are wanting to balance the domestic and international stuff, check these out: http://www.mercycorps.org/mercykits
totally a plug for my own organization, but I think they’re a great gift idea!! :)
December 1, 2008 at 9:46 pm #647957
JoBParticipantRS.. i think you are too.
and an idea for the inevitable leftovers… what about putting some baskets together for the local police and firemen. I never knew one to turn down a cookie:)
December 2, 2008 at 7:19 pm #647958
JoBParticipantI jsut opened the box that had the paper products that i purchased for the Galvan’s reception and never used.. and they are red…
so i have plenty of paper products and plastic utensils..
plates, cups, napkins, plastic utensils…
and yes.. i will still bring something salty to nibble…
December 2, 2008 at 10:11 pm #647959
inactiveMemberMaybe some music too?
December 2, 2008 at 10:19 pm #647960
JenVMemberSomeone should bring a cd player. they do not have music upstairs at Big Al’s.
December 2, 2008 at 10:20 pm #647961
celeste17ParticipantDoes anyone know if Big Al’s has a policy against live music? I think that pre-recorded music playing softly in the background would be better that way people can visit. I will check with Big Al’s tomorrow. Does anyone have their phone #?
December 2, 2008 at 10:27 pm #647962
JenVMemberI think trying to fit live musicians upstairs with all of us would be impossible. Let’s just do a boom box.
December 2, 2008 at 11:39 pm #647963
celeste17ParticipantI think that is a good idea to do pre-recorded music.
December 2, 2008 at 11:53 pm #647964
inactiveMemberI’ve never been to Big Al’s. Blasphemous admission, I realize ;)!
I have no notion of it’s actual size. Whatever works to get any kind of Christmas music happening is more than ok by me.
December 3, 2008 at 12:04 am #647965
RSMemberMaybe someone could bring a dock with speakers and then whoever has an iAnything could bring that and then we’d have a ton of variety and also the ability to see what everyone listens too! Run-on-sentences-rule!
As long as we don’t have to listen to the digital cable music channels or The Professional as our background music. :)
December 3, 2008 at 12:12 am #647966
JenVMemberI see what you did there, RS. You know you luuuuurve the Professional and it’s Chris Hansen overtones…
December 3, 2008 at 12:20 am #647967
RSMemberIt’s true. Anything but the briar patch!! Puuuleeeeeaaase don’t throw me in the briar patch, Chris Hansen!!
December 3, 2008 at 12:23 am #647968
RSMemberAnd if anyone gets the reference, in my defense I was raised by Southerners, watched a lot of old movies, and was not trying to be a jerk by referencing an otherwise offensive and antiquated cartoon stereotype.
Back to the holiday cheer!
December 3, 2008 at 1:19 am #647969
JoBParticipantJoB peers out over her specks and quietly inquires…
aren’t we going to listen to Christmas carols?
hehehehehe
December 3, 2008 at 1:27 am #647970
mellaw6565MemberBah humbug – bars and xmas music make me want to throw up!
December 3, 2008 at 3:23 am #647971
JoBParticipantI asked Seattle Education Access.. an agency that deals with the educational needs of homeless teens what they needed this Christmas for their kids. This is the reply i got…
….
Seattle Education Access is a member agency of the University District Service Providers Alliance, and all agencies are coming together to hold a holiday party for the young people we work with year-round. For many, this will be the closest thing to a family holiday party they will have this year. We need your help.
The UDSPA Holiday Party hosts over 120 homeless and at-risk young people. There is music, food, decorations, and a gift for each and every young person who shows up. We need the support of committed individuals and groups to make this happen. If your place of worship, workplace or civic group hosts a giving tree or holiday donation drive, please consider including UDSPA among the groups you give to.
Listed below are some of the commonly requested items that our young people want and need. All gifts should be $30 or less.
– Gift cards
– Discmans
– Large-sized hooded sweatshirts (dark colors preferred)
– Sleeping bags
– Backpacks
– Disposable hand warmers
– Travel-sized sewing kits
– Battery-operated travel alarm clocks and flashlights
– Bus tokens
– Pre-paid phone cards
– Gloves, hats and scarves
– New underwear
– White tube socks
– Dry dog food
– Travel-sized toiletries
– African American hair products
– Playing cards and Silly Putty
– Journals, notebooks, or art supplies
We ask that all gifts be dropped off by December 15th, unwrapped, to allow plenty of time for organizing and wrapping prior to the holiday party. Our office is located at 1406 NE 50th Street #202 – please call first to let us know if you’re coming by and we’ll be there.
Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have additional questions or ideas.
Please call or email Allison Lord: Allison@seattleeducationaccess.org
or 206.979.9475.
….
if anyone brings any of these items to the holiday get together.. i can make sure they reach the agency in time for them to make a difference for teens without homes this year.
And if you can’t make it to the get together and still would like me to pick up items, just PM me and i will be glad to arrange a time for pick-up.
Many of these items would be as appreciated gently used as new… it’s a good time to clean closets and pull out those items that get pushed back to the corners and never used…
December 3, 2008 at 3:24 am #647972
JoBParticipantmellaw6565…
Big Al’s isn’t a bar.. it’s a brewery tasting room:)
BTW.. kids are ok in the meeting room upstairs…
December 3, 2008 at 3:56 am #647973
JanSParticipantmel…we would love to have you there. It’s not about the place, or whether one drinks or not. It’s about the people, getting together, to have fun together (many don’t drink), and to reach a hand out to those in our community that need whatever small amount we can provide for them. I’m definitely a humbug this time of year, and I’m trying to get beyond that. It’s one day…and some great people (really, you’ll love us)…and may even help some of those students that you have in the evenings..
December 3, 2008 at 4:00 am #647974
JoBParticipantmellaw6565
i am a non-drinker.
i don’t mean that i just drink a little.. i don’t drink alcohol at all…
And i am not the only non-drinker in the crowd.
these get togethers have far more to do with people than with alcohol..and they support some great causes.
and you know i was just teasing about the christmas music. i don’t own an ipod to dock so i won’t have much to say about the music:)
i did find a great word game though… that should make even sober people giggle.
