kathyMemberJust had a short chat with the building manager. The owner went home to sleep – apparently got a nail through his foot. They’re waiting for the insurance adjustor and the arson investigators are busy there. The building owner’s insurance will restore the space. The business owner will need help with his key making equipment, his inventory, wall systems and counters, etc. How about a meeting on Monday evening at 7 at BPP? I asked the building manager to convey to Mr. Dein that there is a community effort going on to help him and she said she’d let him know. The best way to contact him is the business phone number.

JenVMemberExcellent- I am in for Monday. If the owner will be there, I will just give him the WF account info at that time. I am now off for the weekend!
PS: Special thanks to WSB as ALWAYS for bringing this community together in such a huge way. I grew up in a small town and it was never as close as this. Warm fuzzies all around.

AnonymousInactiveI leave for about three hours and can’t believe what has taken place in that short amount of time! You are all amazing! Like I said before, name the time and place for the planning event and I will be there!

beachdrivegirlParticipantKathy thank you so much! 7pm on Monday @ BPP sounds great I will put it on my calendar now!
March 21, 2008 at 9:39 pm #619326
andreaParticipantNewRes, sounds like we’re in for planning this Monday at 7pm at BPP…I will be there!
March 21, 2008 at 9:42 pm #619327
kathyMemberI’ll be glad to contact Mr. Dein and tell him about the meeting – unless one of you knows him personally….?
March 21, 2008 at 9:43 pm #619328
WSBKeymasterKathy, glad you were able to reach someone. I just went by on the way back from my previous engagement and nobody was there (but a tv crew) and the storefront is now boarded up.

JanSParticipantI will make every effort to be at the Monday meeting. I have a “maybe” client at 6:30pm, but “maybe” I’ll have the time free. This is amazing…you guys are truly wonderful…
March 21, 2008 at 10:16 pm #619330
AnonymousInactiveandrea – I will be there. BPP Monday at 7. I don’t have anything to donate for any type of auction, but I can definitely give my time! Will see everyone there!
March 21, 2008 at 10:23 pm #619331
AnonymousInactiveAnother vote for all you guys are amazing. I don’t have monies, but please put me down for donating an auction item(s) if that is the plan chosen.
March 21, 2008 at 10:53 pm #619332
charlabobParticipantI have a class Monday night so I can’t come to the BPP (which would be much more fun). Sign me up to do whatever .. don’t forget to see if the tenants need anything too? If someone has the landlord’s name and number, I can contact hir when I get home.
I’m really amazed at this community, both virtual and real life. Let’s see a NEWSpaper do this in less than 24 hours.

kathyMemberJust talked to the business owner – Michael Dein. Invited him to the meeting Monday evening at 7 pm at BPP. He was amazed at the community coming together and said that he would love to be there. Says he wants to rebuild the business right there. I’m pretty impressed with this community, too!!
March 21, 2008 at 11:45 pm #619334
AimParticipantI am reading all of this at work and covering up my sniffles and teary eyes. Seriously, this community is AMAZING.
Count me in for helping in any way I can.

WSBKeymasterhi all – I got a call from the news desk at one of my former employers (KOMO in this case) just as I was pulling in to the SW Precinct parking lot about 45 minutes ago and they were planning to mention and hotlink the benefit efforts. I will be there Mon nite to cover it as a WSB news story if y’all don’t mind.
March 22, 2008 at 12:39 am #619338
kathyMemberPlease do come! That will be great! We’ll need the coverage.
March 22, 2008 at 12:55 am #619339
stellaruffingtonParticipantI can’t hit a nail with a hammer if my life depended on it, so I would not be good help at the barn building, but I would be more than happy to donate to the auction. Let me know!

WSBKeymasterSeattle Times also has added the account info to a sidebar in their updated story:
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2004296993_webfire21m.html
Just attributed to “West Seattle residents.”
Haven’t seen the KOMO link show up yet, maybe they’re working on an 11 pm followup.
March 22, 2008 at 2:23 am #619341
WSBKeymasterDid any of you who were trying to reach BPP ever connect with them? I just got a secondhand message that BPP’s owner wanted to talk to me. Waiting for a callback from the person who left me that message, but I wanted to check here if any of the organizers had confirmed with him it was OK to have a group there Monday night.
March 22, 2008 at 2:25 am #619342
SteveSMemberI saw this tragedy on the news tonight. The Morgan Community Assoc (MOCA) would love to help out in any way we can. We will attend the meeting on Monday, or when it’s scheduled. We can use our resources, such as our e-mail distribution list to get the word out; we also have signage boards that could be used. One of our members has also gotten word to Gary, the owner of BPP, he is planning to respond when he gets a chance.
March 22, 2008 at 2:34 am #619343
AimParticipantNewResident I’m going to do my best to be there Monday. Unfortunately I can’t always count on being healthy on a day to day basis so I tend to not plan much ahead of time. Often, a full day of work is about all I can manage. But I promise to be there if I’m mobile!
March 22, 2008 at 2:35 am #619344
WSBKeymasterThanks, Steve – that’s actually who I got a message from, was Cindi from MoCA. For those of you who don’t know, MoCA is one of our strongest local community council/associations in West Seattle, and the site where this happened is part of their “district,” so their help makes perfect sense. Once anyone has spoken directly with Gary at BPP to be sure 7 pm Monday is OK, I would be happy to send an FYI to citywide media in case they don’t see the various mentions we’ll have had on the home page by then … if there’s not some huge story breaking elsewhere that night, it might make a perfect “nightside” followup on the fire, especially if the business owner is able to show up.
March 22, 2008 at 2:37 am #619345
AimParticipantIn the picture on the Seattle Times site, I notice there was some really beautiful artwork on the wall. It appears to be graffiti-style. I wonder if one of the local graffiti artists would volunteer to redo the artwork… I know lots of artists read the forums. Anyone up for it?
March 22, 2008 at 2:46 am #619346
addParticipantI’m catching up on WS news as I’ve been out of town all week – all I can say is WOW. I’m not available on Monday night but will eagerly await the outcome of the meeting to see how I can help. I live in the Morgan Junction area – this is my neighborhood! You guys are amazing.
