steve_winterParticipantPerhaps I should add favorite time-efficient route from WS to fremont
After years of biking to ballard (staying along the waterfront then 15th to the Ballard Bridge), I changed jobs and now will be heading to fremont (near gasworks).
I’m realizing that there are a lot of potential routes – but there doesn’t seem to be a clear cut alternative to traverse downtown to get to either dexter or westlake (the bike lanes on 2nd then something when they stop, stay low then climb Broad, stay on the trail until the Queen Anne flyover then ???). I’ll try some and see what works, but would appreciate tips/advice from others.
I suppose I could even go the same route to Ballard then over, but I imagine that would add a couple miles.
Thanks in advance – steve

mark47nParticipantYou don’t say specifically where you’re coming from but the route I take when I ride to Fremont is as follows: Over the low bridge and Spokane to Alaskan> Alaskan to the bike path along the tunnel construction to it’s terminus at Alaskan along the waterfront> (here’s the hairiest part) Alaskan, under the viaduct, to Myrtle Edwards park> Bike bath through Myrtle Edwards park, across the road at the docks at the Norther terminus and then along the trail adjacent tot he Interlake BNSF railyard> take this to W. Emerson Pl and get on the sidewalk at the 1st light, this connects with the South Ship Canal Trail. You’ll follow the trail until you come to the ramp that ties in to Florentia St which will get you onto the Fremont bridge.

Don_BrubeckParticipantHere’s another route, shorter:
Spokane St Bridge and trail eastbound
left at Spokane on East Marginal Way S, merging onto Portside Trail at S Atlantic St
Portside Trail to S King St tunnel construction area
left onto Alaska Way.
right at Yesler.
left at Western Ave.
right at Blanchard (north of Pike Place Market) and up one short, steep cobblestone block)
left at 7th Ave
Merge onto Dexter and go up and over the hill to Fremont Bridge.April 24, 2016 at 1:44 pm #841492
steve_winterParticipantThanks both!
Don – after some experimenting for the last couple weeks, that is actually the exact route I settled on. I like the cobblestones – I imagine I’m touring Belgium or something.
On the way home – I’ve been using the 2nd ave bike lanes which are okay but not the most fun. Is there an elegant way to turn right out of them to get back down to King Street/trail that I’m missing? I just wait for a gap in traffic somewhere past Yesler or so and move right to the turn lanes.
Cheers,
Steve -
