if only the “tea party” had been made of real people. they don’t seem to have the courage of their convictions to occupy anything for any length of time, let alone “take their country back.”

maybe next time – you know, when the weather is nicer – dick armey will pay for RV parking and honey buckets.

At what point did we forget that what the Occupy Wall Street protests are protesting illegal activity that has become business norm in these United States?

Bank of America was recently fined what amounts to a little over a thousand dollars for each person illegally evicted from their homes by Countrywide (Bank of America assumed their obligations when they purchased Countrywide.. factored the cost into their negotiations) …

next to that, the illegality of blocking a street seems seems pretty petty

This thread is so interesting to me. I hear a faint and distant echo of my past in the words written here. As a young person the late 60s I had frequent conversations with my parents about the protests happening at the time, that were amazingly similar (almost exact in some cases) to phrases in this thread.

And then Kent State happened. My parents took their usual stance that students shouldn’t be breaking the law by protesting and those just walking by should have taken a different walking route if they didn’t want to be shot. You break the law, you will likely get hurt.

My constant questions to them were: How else do you get the attention of a government that will not listen to a large block of its people if not by mass gatherings? And, what should citizens do when their government’s laws, which they support financially, cease to benefit all the citizens? At that time citizens who couldn’t afford to shelter their kids in college were required to send their children off to war in a distant land, where they would likely die.. and for reasons that were vague and confusing. It’s not like Vietnam had attacked us.

And in the case of Kent State, my horrified question was: what kind of government shoots it’s own people, especially its young?

Although he never admitted it to me because I was “young and foolish” in his eyes, with Kent State my Father began to become uneasy about the war in Vietnam and the toll it was taking on American soldiers and American citizens. Within a short period of time he changed his opinion of that war and became extremely disenchanted with our governemnt and the system that sent some of our young people to die for reasons he couldn’t believe in.

Too long a piece of writing for this thread, I know. But, reading this thread has reinforced my belief that 1) those who will not reflect on and learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and 2) nothing really changes much in human political affairs under the sun.

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving West Seattle. There is still much to be thankful for.
