JanSParticipantfor those having a difficult time.
1. go to http://www.gravatar.com
2.register
3.upload a pictureet voila…an avatar shows up… not hard, just not how it used to be

clark5080ParticipantSo we apparently can’t use an avitar that is hosted on our own smugmug account?

JanSParticipantbeats me….you’ve tried? All I know is, this is what works..it’s simple, really

clark5080ParticipantI didn’t think you would know Jan I was hoping Tracy or someone helping with the setup of the new site would chime in

squareeyesParticipantIf I want an avatar I will have to change my screen name as gravatar apparently already has a squareeyes. Booo!

miwsParticipantsquareeyes, you might want to give another try at Gravatar. I tried to sign-up there with “miws” as my username, but they claimed that was taken, so I went with “mike in west seattle” instead, that worked and didn’t affect my WSB Forum username.
Just don’t ask me exactly how I did it since Gravatar was totally new to me, so I don’t remember. ;-)

squareeyesParticipantWell I’ll be darned, there it is. Thanks!

WSBKeymasterBelatedly sorry for not chiming in but to tell you the truth I haven’t gone to figure it out myself. So many things changed, had to change, but we did not get to choose how they all changed … and this whole thing has been mightily unsettling for me, changing how my work is done in a variety of ways. I so didn’t want to change but we had no choice.
Anyway, thanks for sharing knowledge. I am still trying to verify whether there’s a way to just upload the avatar here but haven’t gotten the definitive answer first and there are some other bugs we’re slugging through. Thanks again for your patience, and as I said somewhere, I’m also trying to get back something on the forum index that indicates what’s new … in the meantime we do have a widget in the right sidebar and “reply to” and “topic” updates in the ticker … Tracy

CeeBeeParticipantThis is my test if the avatar is set for me. TR, I always use the line that “my cheese got moved” but for this change in your site, the changes have not been that hard to deal with or something that just takes a few minutes to get used to. So don’t be so hard on yourself (take it out on Patrick instead)

WSBKeymasterI’m not seeing it – sorry again – we’re still working. It’s been two weeks tonight since this went live, in some cases an eternity, in the case of working on code fixes, it’s not long enough. And tonight BTW after midnight, we will likely have some downtime – we have to expand the server again to make room for a copy of the site so our developers can test fixes rather than just experimenting on the live site. So it’s for a good reason. Thanks yet again for patience and good cheer. – TR

CeeBeeParticipantIt was because my profile had a 3 iterations ago email (death of qwest and clearwire hosts) I was waiting to see, since the big selling point of Gravatar seems to be that it’s tied to my email, so when it didn’t appear, that’s where I checked first. Good luck tonight!

HelperMonkeyParticipantI seem to be unable to load an avatar – site is telling me that my name and email are already in use. frustrating as I’ve never signed up for Gravatar.
February 1, 2016 at 2:15 pm #832240
HelperMonkeyParticipantthere’s also no customer support help for WordPress. None. Any insight appreciated. I’d rather not change my handle if I can help it, but it’s telling me my name is already in use and I have to choose a different one. I have to say, of all the changes to the new site this forum nonsense is the worst.

WSBKeymasterHi there. What I am hoping our technical people can do is amend the software so that avatars can be uploaded here. We have no control over “Gravatar” and I haven’t even figured it out yet. I’m sorry that the experience is worse but it was this or nothing. The forum software was flat busted and we spent hours trying to delete spam, answering questions for people who tried to log in and got endless loops of “you are a bot,” and worse. It is spamproof now (a bit too much so – it’s holding some posts it thinks are spam that aren’t – I’m going into the filter every five minutes if I can to catch them – I’m trimming the old list of trigger words in hopes that was the problem) and far more functional, if you can please give us a little more time to make some fixes. Thank you – Tracy

HelperMonkeyParticipantMIWS you’re a genius! many thanks for the help. Totally worked!

miwsParticipantYou’re welcome, HM, and thanks!
Dunno about the genius part. I think it was more like being lucky with trial and error. :-)
