clark5080ParticipantI have some mahogany (which you can’t get any more)that I would like to cut into strips and get the strips planed or sanded down to1/16th of an inch so I can cut it into strips for planking on a model boat I am thinking about building. Anyone with a good woodshop that can help me on this one?

FullTiltParticipantHey I have both of those tools, but your going to loose more wood than you gain doing this. I would suggest getting some veneers, which are about a 16th thick. mahogany is a pretty common wood for marine construction and furniture, not rare at all. Expensive now that it has been over harvested, but still available. I would try http://www.crosscuthardwoods.com/
If they wont sell you a small amount, I have some sheets of African Mahogany that I will never use.

ToolShareMemberStarting in June, The West Seattle Tool Library, a community-run public resource, will offer all sorts of tools and resources on a pay-what-you-can basis to get jobs like this done.
The Tool Library is now fully funded and it has a home so it will definitely be a reality.
Keep your eye for upcoming community announcements and tool drives. And contact library@sustainablewestseattle.org for more info or to get involved.
Until June, however, I believe Compton Lumber or Crosscut, both in South Seattle will mill wood for a charge. Alki Lumber might also offer that service.
Depending on the thickness and type of the mohagany you have, though, you might just want to sell that piece and buy some veneer, as FullTilt suggested.
Remember to look for straight grained, 1/4 sawn pieces for the planking, and good luck!

KevinParticipantJim,
I’m sure you are aware, but just in case if not the availability of micro lumber available at most serious hobby stores. Seems to me that I have bought mahogany sheets as thin as 1/32 before.
.
Al sorts of micro dimensional lumber available as well.
.
Woodworkers Supply in Georgetown stocks it too. I enjoy working with the micro plywood that is available. All different sizes and thicknesses in small sheets that are generally about 6″ x 12″ and sometimes larger.
.
And don’t forget about all the different brass stock that is available! Rods, tubes, angle stock and flat stock, along with channels and square tubes.
.
If anyone ever needs some, give me a shout as I purchased more than I will ever use a few years ago :)
