A couple months ago, an up-and-coming local rapper was tragically shot near Queen Anne, and his memorial was constructed around the SW 24th and Kenyon street sign, apparently near where he grew up. This is a really touchy subject and I don’t want to rub anyone the wrong way – but ever since the tragic event there has been constant commotion at this street corner.
For the first couple weeks, a group of his friends congregated at the memorial every evening into night, played the rapper’s music from their cars, and generally kept to themselves. I don’t think anybody living nearby took issue with this, it was sad, touching really, and I went out a few times to talk to the people making the memorial and connect with them. They seemed really nice, and were clearly experiencing a tragic loss.
As the weeks have gone on, the nightly gathering has gotten bigger and bigger, with more and more cars and people showing up every week. The activities have shifted as well – now every evening it’s blaring music (all sorts, not just the late rapper’s), people yelling, racing their cars, and drinking publicly. This last weekend was the most people I’ve seen so far; 30-40 people were in a big group in the middle of the road, completely blocking it, with music blasting from their cars, easy-up tents on the perimeter, with children running around in the street unsupervised while people publicly drink, fight, and yell obscenities.
Illegal activity I’ve observed:
– Blocking traffic, stopping cars and refusing to get out of the street
– Publicly drinking, and overt public intoxication (in front of SPD even)
– Racing cars up and down Kenyon St
– Blaring music from their cars well into the morning (2am+)
– Massive amounts of litteringThe handful of times I’ve observed these illegal activities I’ve called SPD and made a report, and every time they say they’re aware of the group that is hanging out there, and that they are receiving multiple reports every time I call. I’ve seen patrol cars show up a number of times, but nothign ever seems to get resolved. SPD just shoos people out of the road, and the music is turned down until they leave again, when it all resumes.
I’m not sure what to do at this point – it seems like it’s gotten to be less about the memorial/remembrance and more about getting together every night and causing commotion/loitering. I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes because of the context of this tragedy, but it’s really starting to be a problem for those of us living in the nearby apartments.

Topic: Fed Ex incident
Checking to see if any readers were involved in an incident with a Fed Ex truck about 2:20 this afternoon, 6/20/18, at the corner of 35th & 102nd?
I heard sounds of a verbal altercation and looked out to see a Fed Ex truck with a white vehicle stopped right behind it. Then I heard a bang, followed by my gate slamming loudly. I went out, and found my package on the walkway inside my yard. I noticed the gate was ajar, and when I went to close it I saw that the latch was bent in half and damage done to the gate where the screws had torn out through the wood. It won’t close at all now. The truck hadn’t left yet, and I confronted the driver. He denied having “touched” my gate – an interesting position given that he’d just delivered a package. Then he backed up at speed down the block, as if he were looking for someone.
My theory is that he’d had words with someone in another vehicle (probably about his driving) and took it out on my gate. Looking for witnesses, as I’ll be filing a claim. The gate hardware was brand new, just installed a few weeks ago. I would really appreciate any witnesses who might have seen what happened. Thanks in advance.
Hello!
I was turned on to this blog by a friend and former teacher of mine that used to live in Seattle. I just finished my third year as a teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools and will be moving to Seattle to begin working at Pathfinder! I am beyond excited for this opportunity! Seattle has always been a dream city and Pathfinder sounds like an amazing school, so to serve the students and population of a dream city really has me hyped beyond belief.
I am currently in the midst of finding decent and affordable housing. I will continue to browse Craigslist for postings but would love the input of the locals. Here is what I am up against:
– I will be leaving Milwaukee around the first week of August
– I can pay a security deposit and two months rent immediately, though since my income is pretty fixed until I start working for SPS I would prefer that to cover August and September rent as opposed to a first month/last month deal
– I am moving with just what will fit in my car, so I will plan on buying any furnishings I need for a room once I arrive or would be open to a furnished room
– The max I can afford on a room for rent and all utilities would be $1,000 a month, and if at all possible would like to go lower.
– I am 26, will be 27 this September and am very active when I am not at work! I am either working/tinkering with things around the house or biking, hiking, camping, ANYTHING outdoors, and will be going to early AM workouts. If you know of someone in the West Seattle neighborhood that think this sounds like a great fit please let me know and I would love to get in touch! Otherwise, if there are other places to look for housing other than Craigslist just let me know! Any tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks a ton!

Principals only, no recruitersRave: A few weeks ago, SDOT actually came out to fix 35th Ave SW and it wasn’t their pothole ranger team; an actual repaving team – yay!
Rant: After a whole production of partial lane closures with 8-9 large pieces of paving equipment and trucks, only a tiny sliver of a lane was paved a glorious 2 blocks from Myrtle to Holly.
What’s half-“baked” (half-a**-ed) about this?
The strip paved doesn’t align with the lane. It partially covered the turn lane and partially the driving lane. There will be guaranteed potholes starting on the seam this winter right in the middle of the driving lane. More future dangerous swerving opportunities created. We’ll now spend the next 2 years like mindless Sisyphean idiots punching away requests on the Find-it-Fix-it app. They also didn’t do the last pothole ridden block between Holly and the nice concrete of the Morgan/35th intersection. They also left the half-baked pothole ranger slap-dash fixed stretch between Othello and Myrtle in front of OLG.
It’s just a hodge-podge of expensive repetitive half-baked fixes on 35th.
Why didn’t they just properly pave a whole lane?
Why didn’t they pave adjacent blocks while they were out for the day or two?
Who manages this work?
Do different teams talk to each other?
Is this even cost efficient?
Can anybody explain if anything SDOT does is logical?
