Michael WaldoParticipantSo, the mayor is going to investigate the immigration mess.
I guess Seattle has solved all of its local problems so she can go get involved in a national issue. I hope she is not spending a cent of my tax dollars for her and her entourage to travel, lodge and eat.June 19, 2018 at 10:05 pm #920090
KBearParticipantMayor Durkan is a smart woman. She’s capable of working on more than one issue at a time. Aren’t you? Also, national issues such as immigration can have significant local impact. In fact, that kind of makes them local issues, too. I’m glad our mayor is standing with other mayors against the immoral abuses of the Trump administration. Which side are you on?

dobroParticipantIt was announced on tonight’s news that she is paying for this out of her own pocket, so I guess you can rest easy. Immigration is a national and local issue with our status as a major port city. Some of the separated parents are being held at a SeaTac detention center. Have you heard about that?

Michael WaldoParticipantseparating children from their parents is evil. Why do you insult me and question my knowledge of current events.
The City of Seattle declared a homeless EMERGENCY. Our mayor needs to stay focused on that issue.- This reply was modified 5 years, 9 months ago by Michael Waldo.

KBearParticipantYes, and there are potholes everywhere, too. Again, do you really think the mayor is incapable of managing more than one issue at a time? Her résumé suggests otherwise. The detention of children and separation of families is also a crisis. We need more leaders to speak up about it.

dobroParticipant“Why do you insult me and question my knowledge of current events.”
Taking offense at statements offered on the internet where tone is not well conveyed is a distraction from the discussion. Since you were unaware of the Mayor’s self funding of her trip which was widely reported in the news media (I saw it 3 different places), a conclusion that you may have missed something else doesn’t seem too out of line to me. At any rate, no insult was intended.

anonymeParticipantI agree that the separation of families is not only a crisis, but despicable. What I don’t understand is why Durkan can’t speak out against it from here. What will a visit to the Texas border accomplish? Feels like a political stunt to me.

dobroParticipantShe’s doing it in conjunction with a national Mayors group showing solidarity against Trump’s nazi policies. It helps when people with prominent positions show up. People need to speak up and I, for one, am glad she’s representing. I hope more of our public officials show up at the detention centers and demand to know where the missing children are being held.
