Throwing on the cargo shorts over the jeans was probably your first mistake, DN. But on the off-chance that this is a serious post, I’ll share that in my years of daily walks around WS, I’ve often encountered people speaking loudly about things that didn’t have anything to do with their immediate surroundings, let alone me. Next time, try looking up and waving. Never underestimate the power of eye contact, and a wave makes them stop and think, “Oh, do I know that guy?” It also establishes your right to be where you are. In closer quarters, a friendly version of “I’m sorry, I was distracted. Did you say something to me?” usually works. Or take a tip from the birding community, doff your hoodie, and say, “Pardon me, but do you know where I might see the Pidgey?”

so JKB.. if i think you are a terrorist.. are you a terrorist?

and if thinking you are a terrorist makes you one.. do i have the “right ” to kill you to “protect” myself?

by the way.. lest you think this a rhetorical question … i think that anyone carrying a gun in public does so to intimidate and instill “terror”. So the valid question is whether or not i should carry a gun to protect myself from people who “terrorize” me? And.. whether i would be justified in using it?

it seems that some people think that their perception of danger is the only reality… and unfortunately that is a two way street that opens up some really thorny questions.

some people also seem to think their perception of “coverage” is the only reality.

i would like to point out to you that here in West Seattle where the mega flag was not lowered for the victims in Orlando.. it was lowered for the Dallas policemen.

What? that wasn’t “covered” to your standards?
funny.. it wasn’t covered to mine either.. but i suspect i am concerned for entirely different reasons.

I just wandering around my neighborhood, the Highland Park area, and was… I don’t know how to put it… indirectly harassed?

A bit of background, I’m a 38yr old guy who bought a house in the area with his partner 8 years ago. We have a 6 month old son and I go for semi-frequent walks in the area with and without him.

Well, and here’s the nerdy part, tonight I was out playing PokemonGO (if you haven’t heard of it by now… you probably will) which basically amounts to wandering around staring at your phone. I was tracking down a particular digital critter when I wandered down SW Orchard St, across from the park. Now I work in the tech industry so we dress super casually; I tend to gravitate toward jeans and a zip up hoodie. Tonight is rather warm so I threw on some cargo shorts. Anyhow I was walking down the south sidewalk and there were two women on the north sidewalk chatting, suddenly I hear one raise their voice and mention “WELL I HAD THEM PUT IN THE POLICE REPORT”, this was mentioned multiple times: “POLICE REPORT.” And yes, she spoke in all caps. I kept looking at my phone trying to find this particularly elusive Pidgey (it’s a Pokemon bird… look it up) and walking. I then realized that SW Orchard doesn’t have a turn off until 16th and decided to turn back and head home. I was also curious if they were really talking about me so I switched sides of the street and headed back up. As I passed I heard the same woman, who had since moved close to her house (I didn’t look to see where) say “I’m going in! If he heads up here I’ll tell him to leave.” So, they were talking about me.

It was pretty heartbreaking to think that people see me out walking, doing something rather childlike and nerdy, and for some reason feel that they need to make veiled threats as though I wished them harm. I don’t feel I look threatening, but then I don’t see me from other people’s eyes… so I guess I don’t really know. Anyhow if the woman who made these comments frequents this blog, I’ll have you know that your careless words really left me feeling pretty bad.

Is there a good self serve salad bar in any of the grocery stores in West Seattle or Burien? I really love the salad bar in Ballard Market and I’d love to find one over here.

Some things seem missing in coverage of Dallas. One is that nobody mentions what kind of guns were used. Is an AR-15 news but others aren’t?

And where are the cries of ‘hate crime’ and ‘domestic terrorism’? We sure heard those after Orlando.

Wow, folks, are you all so confident in your finances and health that you simply cannot imagine a scenario in which you might be bankrupted due to a crisis through no fault of your own? And left only with the companionship of a beloved pet and then suddenly your pet had a crisis? You say everybody should plan for such possibilities? I have 3 dogs, pet insurance, disability insurance, a pet trust to pay for their care if I outlive them—and enough experience with people dealing with misfortunes that I can still visualize scenarios in which I could end up in similar straits. Remember karma.

We need someone with experience in pressure washing, possibly sanding and staining an old wood deck. Carpentry skills would also be appreciated, as we need to replace the deck rails and install better-looking gates to the deck. We live in Arbor Heights, West Seattle, and can provide more details when contacted. Please email contactannu@gmail.com or call/text (206) 445-5459 for more information. DO NOT REPLY directly to this post. Homeowners, if you have tips on good, reliable contractors who have done this kind of work, that also would be welcome. Thank you.

Actually, Joe has a point. When I first saw this thread title, my inner eyebrow went up and I thought “Hmmm.” I’ve lost a few pets, and I’ve never been asked to pay for the cremation–What’s the vet going to do, not dipose of the animal’s remains if you don’t pay? I have known vets who charge if you want a single cremation of only your pet, but most pet crematoriums will waive the fee for a mass cremation, or the vet eats the cost since they aren’t charged a great deal by the crematorium. Then I read the thread. It starts off asking for donations for a cremation. Well, see above…that’s not quite kosher. But fine, maybe things have changed, it’s been a few years (knock wood) since I’ve lost a pet.
Then a post mentions an urn and/or a necklace. Ahh. Now it makes sense. The poster is asking for donations to buy a memento. Not the sort of thing I would donate to, or that I would ask strangers to pay for, but to each their own. Still, that price seemed high to me, so I checked in with a vet friend, who told me their clinic will give the ashes to the pet owner for free, will give the owner a paw print clay thing for 10 dollars, and the crematorium they use charges between 40 and 70 dollars for urns, depending on size and style.
Then a little further into the thread, there seems to be confusion about whether money was actually donated and who it went to, then suddenly the call for donations is closed because it’s been paid in full.
I don’t like to judge, and if you want to give away your money without a thought to whether the cause is legitimate or genuine, that’s your business. But there’s odd stuff in this thread, and there’s nothing wrong with being a little bit skeptical when people ask for money for things that are not strict necessities. Junction Joe could have been nicer in his original post, but being skeptical is not a crime. When it comes to the internet, it’s stupid not to have a little bit of caution.

Finally, to the OP. It absolutely sucks to lose an animal you love. I’m sorry for your loss.

I am a pet sitter that regularly works in the WS area. Unfortunately I am not available during those dates, but if you post in the FB group for “Seattle Dog Walkers and Pet Sitters” there are tons of people that are trustworthy! Also, Rover is great if you’re able to complete meet-n-greets before hand. Sorry I couldn’t be a bigger help, good luck!

I am a dog-lover, and I feel for muchlove’s loss. It’s awful to lose a beloved pet – I know. And it isn’t very nice to make remarks about “begging.” But I can see where Junction Joe and HunterG are coming from, even if I don’t agree with them. There have indeed been scams with people asking for money for non-existent causes, even though those are much less common than legitimate requests for funds. Plus, many people have “donation fatigue,” where we get maybe 10 requests every day for money for a good cause. And, finally, when I see Kickstarter and GoFundMe requests for, say, donations to help an established filmmaker make a new movie or an established bar owner to open a new watering hole, I roll my eyes. I’d much rather donate my money to truly worthy causes.
Bottom line: My condolences for the loss of a dear, beloved pet. And perhaps cynicism has no place in this thread, but these are cynical times.

again, Junction Joe…I do not understand your negativity. Did you bother to read AND ABSORB what the OP was saying? If you do not want to help, or don’t have the means to help, perhaps it’s better to keep your opinions to yourself. This woman has just lost a beloved pet. How about a little sympathy and understanding. Thank you.

Although not a West Seattle native, after living in this community for 30 years I think I can safely say we are a community that has tried hard to be close-knit and supportive of one another. Until the recent construction boom that has been an oft-cited reason for people choosing to move here. And who knows, perhaps I am underestimating our newest residents moving into the apartments and condos.

From time to time situations such as this have been posted here in the WSB. After vetting the issue, because of our concern and support for one another we have at various times offered forth cash, food, furniture, housing, volunteer hours, transportation and other much needed goods and services. I see it as what community is all about. And WSB, including the forums, is a voice of the community. Your perceived “begging” is my perceived call for mutual support.

It’s not impossible. We are right near a sizable forested area, after all. A cougar was seen and captured in Discovery Park in 2009.

It may have been just passing through. Cougars range widely and don’t particularly like being around densely populated areas. That said, they can pose a danger to pets and small children so a call to Fish & Wildlife might be in order. If there are more sightings they’ll send someone to trap and relocate.

We are a West Seattle family with two young girls ages 3.5 and 1.5yrs old. Looking for a nanny to help us during the week for 30-40hrs, 3-4days/wk starting at 8am. Prefer someone with toddler experience. Our 3 year old goes to school for 4 hours during the day. And the baby takes two naps a day. Need help getting our daughter to school, preparing lunches, and having fun playing games, art projects, play dates, or take them on trips to the park, zoo, etc. Would love to find someone local who loves young kids.

I don’t mean on purpose (I hope!). But yesterday, the parents and the remaining baby were right on the sidewalk near the ferry terminal/Cove Park. They were heading toward the busy street, with cars and motorcycles zooming by. A kind police officer (a woman, I didn’t get her name) was able to guide the geese away, back toward the beach, using some scraps of food. Another woman, a WSDOT employee, helped. One of the women said it was possible that someone who lives on the hillside across the street is putting out food for the geese. NOT a good idea, as the geese then cross the dangerous road. So, if you want to put out food for them (though it probably isn’t necessary), leave it by the shore, in a safe place. Or, better still, please keep your distance, as the parents are very very protective of their baby goose and the dad can be justifiably aggressive if you approach.
