Generally I try to avoid driving during the school commute hours for several reasons. Occasionally my schedule takes me through one or two. But I strive to avoid the red-light districts on Roxbury or Fauntleroy. I don’t quite understand how they work and what the threshold is for these automatic cameras. It’s my understanding that if you happen to go a mile or two over, you will get nailed for very expensive ticket.

I try to drive looking forward with glances in the rear and side mirrors. Trying to keep my nose down to read the speed gauge makes this problematical. So even if I have slowed to 19 or 20 mph, it doesn’t mean that the speed can’t inch up while driving several blocks and keeping an eye out for others. So if I get up to 21 or 22, is the camera going to record this? And a ticket will appear shortly in the mail? I certainly realize the importance of safety for the children, but I don’t get the red-light camera thing. I see it as just another trick to fleece the citizen. I drive slowly and extra cautiously in school zones. I see others doing the same. Why has it been determined necessary to have these cameras? It’s a creeping phenomenon—like an invasive species at so many intersections in the various cities.

At any rate, I do not recall any announcements about cameras at O.L.O.G. school (the Catholic school on 35th and Myrtle). The known West Seattle cameras were Fauntleroy and the one or two on Roxbury as far as I know. There may be others, but O.L.O.G. was not in this group. Today while driving north on 35th I noticed for the first time a sign saying: “Photo-enforced”. I am positive I drove this section in the last week during school times with lights flashing and did not see any such sign. How long has it been there? Does anyone know?

And just how does the camera work? Does it screen the oncoming traffic at either end, or does it somehow look backwards as well? Are there multiple cameras? Are they up high scanning down below? Are they spaced along the street? I will have to bike up there and try to figure this out.

And does anyone know for sure the threshold over which the ticket is given? 20.1, 20.2,…21.0, …22.0, etc. Is there a standard? I certainly intend to go 20 mph and not go faster, but I would like to know if there is any wiggle room for vehicle going slightly faster. Otherwise, we may as well aim for 15 mph in order to avoid the ticket. I will definitely do my best to avoid yet another school zone. Thanks.

I have a pokemon on my street and to me it’s kind of amusing to see the occasional person find it. Players in more crowded spaces unaware of their surroundings can be pretty annoying though.

Right now the pax con is going on so there is a huge uptick in people playing that will decrease after pax. And keep in mind that the lifecycle of these games is pretty short so most will move on to the next new shiny thing pretty soon.

Well, I see children running out of the wading pool and stomping down grasses in the area. I see volleyball and badminton players run out of their play “zones” and stomp on plants. I see people sprawled out on blankets depriving the grass beneath them of vital nutrients. I see beachgoers go off paths to pick up driftwood and form them into un-natural shapes and shelters. I see people at picnics chase balls and children into native plant areas. I propose we put high fences around all but specially designated pathways so that no one will be able to touch or see any plants or trees up close. That should increase the beauty of the park.

Clearly I’m being snarky, although I would seriously advocate for a complaint free zone. C’mon, it’s a public park. Let ALL the people who pay taxes to support maintenance of the park enjoy it as they will, so long as they are on foot and not obviously ripping up the landscape. It’s fall and the grasses will naturally grow back with winter rains. There are thousands more people in West Seattle now. Expecting the same degree of quiet in the park as we had it 10 years ago just isn’t going to happen. Gotta’ move way out of the city for that.

So jump on board… download the free version of the game and have fun with it. You don’t have to spend money to play and it’s not just for THAT generation that you so love to complain about. Oh and by the way… all you older folks, have you forgotten about the complaining that was done about your generation when you were young? I haven’t. I enjoy the park and enjoy watching people play Pokémon or whatever else they want. Look for joy in the park. It’s all around you! Just sayin’…

I agree that Pokemon Go is a disruption to the ecosystem at Lincoln Park. The shaded area alongside the pathway was a quiet area with healthy grass growth – and among the only 2 places where one can find shade – is now found loaded with borgs staring at their devices, having no idea that they are taking away a meditative, peaceful area – the park – a break from the IT world we are surrounded and consumed by 24/7. The grass is stomped/sat on and gone, as is the Buddhist Monk who loved to sit and meditate there, and the tranquil serenity of Lincoln Park, where the wildlife and ecosystem were protected, just isn’t.

It isn’t possible for the human brain to attend to the complexities of that game, their devices, AND all the other people, creatures, and goings on around them. I have seen whales breaching, eagles flying, other events, completely missed by PG players. They are NOT outside enjoying the park, they don’t even see, smell, experience it. They are playing a game that is making a company and its shareholders LOTS of money. Children and parents are playing that game, pretending that that is quality family time. I have heard young children telling their parents that the parents had promised the child the parents would only play for 10 minutes, then they would play with their children. “Come on, Dad, let’s walk on the logs now.”

When we have a park as beautiful as Lincoln Park, it is our charge to protect it and all the creatures in it. I propose “Pokemon NO” zones – that all city, regional, state, and national parks need to take this on, and stop welcoming this phenomenon into the parks. The parks are there to preserve, not degrade, our beautiful earth, to help us remember we live and are a part of its interwoven ecosystem, to cherish and experience it when we are there. If Pokemon Go leads people to them, ok. If you enter, however, you MUST turn it off. No internet service. No Pokemon. No. Simply.

Thanks, Miws and West Seattle Blog! Of course we can count on the Blog for the best coverage. I plan to call Animal Control’s head of enforcement when he returns from vacation later this week. He was quite responsive when I spoke with him a few years ago. But part of the problem, along with obnoxious dog owners (the owners, not the dogs!) who flout the law, is lack of staffing for Animal Control. As far as I can determine, it’s up to City Council to allocate more funds for hiring and training. Plus, the signage in Lincoln Park, for instance, is pretty pathetic and easy to miss/ignore.
I’ll provide an update here once I’ve spoken with Animal Control. In the meantime, if you see an off-leash dog in our parks and especially on the beaches, please call Animal Control or contact Parks and Recreation. As I’ve said before, I love dogs – it isn’t their fault. It’s just the irresponsible owners, who, thankfully, are in the minority, who cause all the problems. In fact, these owners can be quite rude and aggressive.

Diana, you can take exception all you like, but if what you say about your own company is true, then you ARE an exception – not the rule. There is also a difference between gardeners and landscapers, although sometimes the line is blurred. It sounds like you may employ the former. I know some garden maintenance companies have a few trained people on their crew, so it’s important to know who you’re getting.

I stand by my caution; most mow & blow crews simply don’t have the credentials to do tree work. If your company is truly an exception, I wonder that you didn’t post contact info for the OP – and prove it.

I’ve had nothing but good to excellent experiences with airbnb all over the world. All organizations, especially big ones like this, have glitches. Don’t throw out the baby with the bath water.

    PERSECUTION
    “per-se-cu-tion
    [pur-si-kyoo-shuh n]

    Spell Syllables

    noun
    1. the act of persecuting.
    2. the state of being persecuted.
    3. a program or campaign to exterminate, drive away, or subjugate people based on their membership in a religious, ethnic, social, or racial group:”

I may disagree with you on some, but not all the points you made, but you can trust me on this: Persecution isn’t on my wish list for Republicans. I wish you weren’t so paranoid about all Democrats in Seattle. Some of us are darned nice people and Americans who love this country just like some conservatives. One of the things that makes this country great is that we have the freedom to disagree on issues of all sorts. Do you not agree with this? How have you been persecuted?
