I noticed around Christmas that a lot (but not all) of them had Amazon on the sides. Whether those were the removable type, I don’t know. But there seems to be more of these vans parked every time I pass through there.

The recipe above is the same or close to Paula Deen’s recipe and she’s an idiot. Bananas are not a substitute for banana leaves. Substitutes, if you google it, include aluminum foil and corn husks.

Nitro: Banana peels can contain significant amounts of toxic pesticide residue, as Cavendish banana production is a monoculture under attack by a range of fungi. Bananas are a heavily sprayed food crop. If you wash them really well you can maybe get a significant amount of the residue off. I’m not sure what the heat of cooking might do to improve them. But in general one should avoid eating banana peels for that reason.

YOUR THOUGHTS? Early concept for Harbor/Spokane/Avalon intersection improvements

As a side note for repairs to roadways after construction, this comment mentions that the contractors temporarily patch it, and it’s the City’s responsibility to complete the final patch. I don’t know if that is true or not, though.
e.t.a.- well, the link doesn’t seem to go to the comment i was referencing, but scroll down to find ‘Nigel’s’ comment.

“Corporate Welfare for Amazon!” Couldn’t have said it better. I brought this up in another forum how I thought city property could be better repurposed or utilized. I would welcome my city providing a lease for revenue positive use (1.). I’ve also said that developers / contractors need to repair utility patches to “at or better” standards instead of leaving us with potholed streets. They’re getting too many free rides that we don’t get as regular tax-paying citizens.

    1. Repurposing THE Viaduct for a park or using the Battery Street Tunnel for a city motor-pool in stead just filling it in.

Corporate Welfare for Amazon! In this case, it’s in the form of free parking for their fleet of vans. The company I work for made sure that the building they moved into had parking for their fleet of vehicles. I guess Amazon does what it wants to. That’s part of the reason that you’ll never see one of those white vans dropping something off at my house!

    From Facebook
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good, because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.
With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take, because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan, because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too.
He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat, because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents, because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean, because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees, because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation, because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.
Joes employer pays these standards, because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.
If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check, because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home, because of his temporary misfortune.
Its noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC, because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan, because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world, because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards.
He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration, because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans.
The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension, because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.
Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

Even if you don’t have an imu, you can still make Hawaiian kalua pig at home from pork butt purchased at your local supermarket.
    Ingredients:
    • 4-5 pound pork butt
    • 2½ tablespoons Hawaiian salt (substitute kosher salt)
    • 2 tablespoons liquid smoke
    • 1 banana leaf (substitute 4-5 whole, unpeeled bananas)
    • 4-6 ti leaves (substitute aluminum foil)
    Preparation:
Trim any excess fat from the roast. Make several shallow long cuts along the roast or pierce liberally with a fork. (This allows the salt and liquid smoke to penetrate the meat.) Rub with salt and liquid smoke. Wrap the roast with banana leaf or in the absence of same, place whole bananas on top of meat .
Cut the ribs from the ti leaves and wrap over the banana leaf. Substitute aluminum foil, if ti leaves are not available. (Ti leaves can often be obtained from a local florist). Tie securely with twine.
Roast in a 325-350 degree oven for about 45 minutes per pound. When meat is done, remove ti leaves, banana leaf (or bananas) and shred pork.

There is a principle of business that it is much more expensive to acquire a new customer than to keep an existing customer. Understanding that principle, whenever your promo deal with Comcast expires, just call them up and threaten to switch unless they give you their current new customer deal. I imagine the same strategy would work with the other providers as well.

I just removed the top layer of excess sod and soil in my backyard seeded lawn in order to make way for a new seeded lawn. It is available for pickup at my home in North Admiral. It is two piles each approximately 2′ high by 3′ wide by 8′ long. It does have weeds in the lawn but the soil quality is excellent otherwise.

Don’t start blind drilling in walls that you don’t own! The flexible drill bits made for this require other tools and some practice to not not drill long raking grooves on the other side of a wall to say nothing about hitting other cables or pipe (hint: most drain pipes are ABS plastic and many waterlines are plastic now as well). If you’re convinced this is the way to go you can cut a chase in the sheetrock on your side and drill it out that way while retaining the removed pieces for reinstallation, taping and mudding. If it’s a condo check your CC&Rs (bylaws and rules, etc) as you may not be able to do that if it’s a demising wall. I’d recommend Wiremold for a surface installation unless you are committed to concealed.

Yes, I’m an electrician. Yes, I’ve damaged other equipment in walls using these bits and see what I said about long grooves and yes, I’ve been an electrician for a long time.
