The reason the Rainbow cross walks get brought up all the time is the Mayor spent almost a $100,000.00 of the tax payers money to paint all those cross walks.
I could go on about the Safe Injection sites, Helping the Homeless, Painted columns…
Murray spending is out of control. Can’t wait till November, Bye Bye Murray!

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, we have figured out over these 10 years how to get a reasonable amount of sleep (although what that means for me is probably not what it means for non-night owls). But that’s why we really appreciate tips – since we’re on call 24/7 – especially when that huge wave of sirens hits your neighborhood in the 3-6 am vicinity when we are less likely to have someone directly in front of a scanner … text or call 206-293-6302! – TR

shanua.. we couldn’t agree more.. we can’t go on like this. But the answer isn’t using such a large chunk of our homeless dollars in sweeps when sanitation services are so much cheaper.
as for consequences.. i would like you to pitch a tent in your back yard and then go spend the next rainstorm in it.. and tell me how long you last..
For the most part people are not living in tents by choice.. they would much prefer housing .. just like you and i would… with locks and indoor plumbing and cooking facilities.
The largest gift i give the guy who lives in a tent and comes to work in my yard isn’t the meal i always feed him but the use of my shower a couple of times a week and a share of the bounty the garden produces.

it’s too easy to forget that the homeless are people just like us.. with the same hopes and dreams for themselves and their loved ones that we have.

I’m reading the blog, sometimes in completely different place & timezone, I note the time when some of these stories are put up. I am always amazed at your work so I just wanted to say thank you. I am at odds with are digital age sometimes, but you provide a top-notch connection to my neighborhood. So once again, a well deserved thank you!

P.S. Do you sleep at all?

Nikki Haley might be soft spoken…but, IMO, the ex-gov of SC is a loyalist to our present president and his regime….she gets her orders from him…and he would like to do away with the UN, just like he’s getting rid of everything else :(

Thank you. I walked by as the sun was going down and picked up the two bags. I think that leaves 3 smaller pots with about 4 inch diameter plants.

I’m looking forward to giving rhubarb growing a try. Love making strawberry-rhubarb crisps when it’s the season.

No, the Regence plan is the one that was canceled. As a former provider I know how much trouble UHC gives to their patients. This is from experience, not someone else’s rating.

When I started Part B last fall, I got on the Premera Advantage plan. I had no sooner picked a PCP (no mean feat) than the docs canceled their contract. I canceled Premera soon after, as I could not find docs. I also found SHIBA to be of little help. They will explain the differences between supplemental and advantage plans, and provide a list of Washington state providers, but will not make recommendations or help with decision making. I feel for you, dogs; even though I used to manage a medical practice, the health insurance market has become an absolute nightmare to navigate. I agree with Rags that the clearest source of info is on the Medicare website.

Of course as soon as I post, I come up with some of the information I was looking for before.
Go to the following article and scroll down to the chart labeled 2014 Property Taxes by County. Counties with higher property tax rates are darker, while counties with lower property tax rates are lighter. Hover over King Country and the property tax rate is 1.06. Hover over Kane or Dekalb counties, which are suburbs of Chicago, and you see property tax rates of 2.6 and 3.27. Yikes! And they have a state income tax and a sales tax. Even relatively conservative Dallas has a 2.41% property tax rate as well as a state income tax and sales tax. Compared to those types of places we should have a lot of room to balance the funding sources needed to pay for our state and local government.

My youngest just graduated from college and moved out. My husband works full time. I have a lot of extra time on my hands. I love children and can’t wait to be a grandparent one day. I don’t want to work full time, so I’m not looking for a job. My sister-in-law is a nanny and she loves it. As a resident of West Seattle I thought I’d try the WS blog and see if anyone needs help. I don’t have daycare experience but I have raised 2 children. Let me know if you’d like to meet.

Just in case anyone still cares, I saw a couple different brands of frozen banana leaves at Uwajimaya just yesterday. They were $1.95 per pound. Yet another reason to have Uwajimaya move into the ex-Whole Foods location.

I lost my engagement ring sometime in the month of March, most likely somewhere out and about on the peninsula. It is has an oval shaped stone, and a white gold band. Was hoping someone has stumbled across it. If you happen to come across something that meets the description, I would so greatly appreciate it if you could reply.

    Thank you!

I strongly urge an “Advantage” program if you are (like me) planning to do a lot of traveling. They have the most flexibility. I prefer Premera because it covers all my docs, Swedish and the UW hospitals. I would run as fast as I could away from United Healthcare sponsored by AARP.

This week the UN is meeting to negotiate a ban on nuclear weapons. What a great idea! The US refuses to participate. The United States led a BOYCOTT of U.N. talks on on Monday. Despite the boycott, more than 100 nations did take part, although none of the participating countries possess nuclear weapons.

Asked to explain the US boycott, U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said: “You’re going to see almost 40 countries that are not in the General Assembly today. And that’s 40 countries that are saying, in this day and time, we would love to have a ban on nuclear—on nuclear weapons. But in this day and time, we can’t honestly say that we can protect our people by allowing the bad actors to have them, and those of us that are good, trying to keep peace and safety, not to have them.”

Our ambassador, Nikki Haley, says that we can’t negotiate a ban because we are ‘the good guys’ and we can’t allow the ‘bad actors to have them.’ This is ridiculous in so many ways! First, how is it that we are the good guys …. Our ambassador should brush up on her history of genocide of Native Americans, slavery, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Vietnam, contra wars in Central America, overthrow of Allende in Chili, the overthrow of Mosaddegh in Iran, and the tragedies in Afghanistan and Iraq. Furthermore, how does participating in negotiations allow bad actors to have nuclear weapons? Isn’t negotiation about keeping the bad actors from acquiring nuclear weapons? Who do you negotiate with….those you already agree with ….?

Please write your representatives and demand that the US participate in negotiating a Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty. It is unacceptable for our representative to the United Nations declare that the United States won’t even talk about a ban; it must perpetuate its nuclear arsenal. While the United States stands on the sidelines, more than 100 nations are attempting to work out a tangible pathway toward the total elimination of nuclear weapons. Without US participation the effort can’t succeed.

Moreover, the U.S. government plans to spend $1 trillion to upgrade and expand the capability of its nuclear arsenal.  This will not protect us, it will fuel a nuclear arms race among the nine nuclear nations and push non-nuclear powers to try to develop them. A nuclear arms race invites catastrophe. Perhaps there will be a nuclear accident, a sociopath will gain possession of a nuclear weapon, or nuclear weapons will be used by one or more of the nuclear powers in war. The only way to ensure that these weapons will not bring catastrophe is to work toward their total elimination. This is the way to protect our people.

West Seattle Neighbors for Peace and Justice are part of the state-wide coalition of organizations working together to promote nuclear disarmament. If not in ‘this day and time’, then when? Join us.

I just signed up for Medicare, but am still employed and have medical insurance. Soon I would like to retire and understand
I will need a supplement to my Medicare. Any advice on plans would be very appreciated. I am a single, 65 year old female in relatively good health. I plan to travel out of state at times and need a supplement which will cover me. I will start the Part B Medicare after I retire also. Any suggestions.. It all looks so confusing. Thank you.

I am writing on behalf of Seattle Glee Clubs, a local, nonprofit adult amateur singing organization, We are in the process of looking for new rehearsal space. We were wondering if you might be able to help spread the news to see if there is a local business or church that might have a space for us.

The Seattle Glee Clubs has been in existence for 25 years. We have rehearsed in West Seattle for over 11 years. We currently have two subgroups: the Seattle Metropolitan Singers (The Met)and the Offbeats. We rehearse from September through May, and perform concerts from October through June. We also sing at retirement communities, community centers, and The Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition to benefit Pike Place Senior Center. In addition to bringing music into the lives of our community, we support other local nonprofits benefitting women and children such as Mary’s Place and LifeWire by collecting donations at our concerts.

We are looking for space for up to 35 people to rehearse on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30 – 9:30 pm. There may be occasions when additional evenings might be needed. We are also looking for secure storage for file cabinets of music, amplifiers, microphones and other accessory equipment.

We have been taking the next few months to find just the right fit for our organization. We are looking to forge a long-term relationship with a corporate sponsor, church, school, performance space or warehouse that would be willing to offer us a very low rate of rent for a tax write-off. Promotion of the corporate sponsor through our members, website, and concert programs would be one of the benefits.

More information about the Seattle Glee Clubs can be found on our website http://www.seattlegleeclubs.org.

I look forward to all replies and the possibility of creating a relationship with a local entity for a mutually benefitting proposal. You can email me at pmjantz@gmail.com

    Sincerely,

    Phyllis Jantz

Board Vice President and Seattle Metropolitan Singers member

Is there anything that can be done to remove the tent dweller who has set up camp in the blue tent just as I make a right from the bridge to go onto beach drive? How come I hear the beach being cleared by the police loudspeaker every night at 11 pm but someone in a tent camping near the beach cannot be told to move on? I am frustrated like everyone else( especially since my taxes just skyrocketed to pay to live in this beautiful place)….

So, I made the kalua park and it was great!! Glad I got the banana leaves. It added great flavor.

I didn’t have a smoker, so I used liquid smoke. The recipe I had was a slow cooker recipe- I wanted something quick and easy. With the slow cooker, no need to do the outer wrapping with Ti leaves or foil. The slow cooker kept the moisture in.

So I first cut a few deeper slits in the pork butt (mine was about 3 lbs) and inserted 4 garlic cloves. Lightly scored the surface of the pork. Took about 2 tsp of liquid smoke and rubbed it on the pork (the original recipe called for more, but I went light on my first time as I wasn’t sure how it would come out- too much liquid smoke doesn’t taste good to me). Then rubbed about 2 tsp of medium coarse Hawaiian sea salt on it. Maybe could have used a little more salt, which I’ll try next time. Laid a banana leaf in the bottom of the slow cooker and then wrapped the pork butt in a few more banana leaves like a birthday present. Plopped it in the slow cooker on low for 10 hours.

We were pretty happy with it considering it took me all of 5 minutes to put it together in the morning and it was ready to go when we got home after work. The meat was super moist and melted in your mouth!

I can only imagine how much better it would be with a smoker instead of the liquid smoke! But for a quick and easy meal to cook while you’re away, it was good. I’ll make it again- probably with a bigger pork butt so we can have more leftovers! I saw some really good sides to make with it, and will maybe try that next time also.

Thanks, everybody for all of your tips and advice!!

$300 bus tickets back home, wherever that may be. Back to a better support network. That may get the numbers more manageable for providing services and support to those who choose to stay in Seattle. Think about it.
