AmblypygidParticipantThis morning I saw a striped skunk along the paved walkway from the South parking lot to the beach. I have lived in West Seattle all my life without seeing one, so I was pretty excited to see it! I wanted to post a heads up, especially for those who walk with dogs.

SunuvaParticipantI have dogs get at a skunk before, it is terrible! So tough to get rid of that smell. The only thing worse that I’ve had dogs do is roll in a dead carcass and also had one dog try unsuccessfully to chew on a porcupine. Silly dogs. Thanks for the heads-up!

anonymeParticipantCool! Now if we could just train a skunk patrol to spray off-leash dogs – or better yet, their owners.

SunuvaParticipantHeh, anonyme, that would certainly be a memorable lesson for a dog owner letting their dog off leash in a city park.. and one I would consider due punishment.
FWIW, my anecdotes about my dogs getting into things were from when I lived in Montana with acreage for dogs to run and no off-leash laws being broken. Dogs get into trouble, it’s just their nature. In the city parks and common areas, the rules/laws absolutely need to be followed for so many reasons. Maybe a skunk or two might actually be for the better in Lincoln Park.

anonymeParticipantSunuva, my comment was not directed at you, if that’s what you thought. I’ve lived on a farm, and had dogs that got “skunked” – so I know what you mean! The worst I’ve seen was a dog that got “pined” – a nose full of porcupine quills. Horrible.
Maybe we could train some porcupines, too?

SunuvaParticipantNo worries, Anonyme. I didn’t think it was directed at me. It was more that I re-read my comment and thought about how sensitive people are to off-leash dogs around here and wanted to get ahead of any assumptions about how my dogs got into so much trouble. ;)
