CMP, I’ve eaten at Ho-Win twice. It’s functional. Not the best, not the worst. I wouldn’t say to run there, but you could do worse.

I think my issue with chinese restaurants though is that chinese food in NYC/NJ is *very* different than chinese food here. I think I’m searching for something that doesn’t exist here, like good pastrami. So I tolerate it here and then when I’m back there I eat myself sick on it. :)

I had Southwest come out and quote for some repipe….$1600 for ten sweat joints on copper pipes. That’s $160 a joint!. I hired a retired plumber for the day who taught me how to solder and I did it myself:)

cruiser, #6 is the winner. heaven forbid you should ever actually tell the clerk what you couldn’t find! “I’m sorry you couldn’t find the low sodium capers, but can’t you see I’m really busy, and there are fourteen people in line behind you, and my performance is based on productivity, so please move through the line in 20 seconds, goodbye Mr. (looks at receipt) A, haveaniceday.”

My #1 pet peeve = drivers who amble along at 40, 45 mph in the left lane of a highway (I usually notice on I-90 over the pass) dum-de-dum without a care in the world. These people, have they never heard of the PASSING LANE?

Funny, I’d say the Alki Starbucks is by far the best in WS. Admiral is 2nd best, though the staff there can be snarky at times. Worst by far is 35th/Avalon DT, followed closely by the Morgan Junction location. All my opinion, though, of course.

Right there with you on this. Southcenter is pure, unmitigated Hell.

There is a lady who has been behind me in stores twice now, on two different days in two different Westwood Village stores, singing Christmas Carols. Just as I was sighing a breath of relief that they weren’t playing overhead for that 5 minutes, she started up. She had a nice voice; I’m just over the Christmas music. (bah humbug, Grinch I am)

Shout out to three folks I encountered tonight also at Westwood Village. The first one was a mother and daughter team at B&N. I walk with a cane. Daughter (4-ish?) was heading toward me and Mom reeled her in a bit so she didn’t smack into me. Daughter pointed and asked “Mommy, what’s that?” Mom replied “It’s a cane. People use it to help them walk better.” So many parents “shush” their kids when they’re asking perfectly normal, natural questions about the differences between folks. It’s nice to see one answer in a matter-of-fact way.

Both of the other two were at QFC. I was exhausted by the time I got there. It must have showed. A kind man using a scooter back near the butcher asked me if I wanted a lift, which made me giggle.

I asked an employee where-the-heck they were hiding the raisins, as I’d been around the store 3 times, and down the baking aisle each time and hadn’t seen them. The woman not only went and got them for me, but then offered to carry my basket for me to finish my shopping. I must have really looked as tired as I felt. I’ve been fighting a pretty major medical issue, and tonight was a night where the “above and beyond” as well as the touch of humor were just so appreciated. It really made my night.

The suspicion is that it’s guerrilla marketing (or viral, I always confuse the two) that Starbucks agents themselves may have instigated. Whatever, if it’s really happening, that’s kinda cool. I’ll just settle for the free samples.

There’s sort of a meme going around the Blogosphere about this. It’s been mentioned in several places. I forgot whether I saw it on MeFi or Boing Boing.

joetheplumberseattle website or # is 206-285-2434. Had Beacon charge me $300 for a half hour job plus the cost of tool rental. Also billed me for the blade they used “in case” it breaks. It didn’t. I wanted to keep the blade on principle since I payed for it. Couldn’t, of course. Called Joe the next time and he talked me through the problem on the phone. Fixed it myself. Can’t tell you how much I appreciated his honesty that I didn’t really need him. Would not hesitate to call him for a real job.

I cut my own grass, but the giant hedge next to the house has gotten out of control and I’m out classed. Can anyone recommend someone to come and cut the 10′ tall green monster back down to size? And take away the debris too?

    Thanks neighbor!

We are on the lookout for this and still haven’t found anything. So far, we can tell you that Pegasus on Alki is closed as are all the takeout joints at Westwood Village, Duke’s, Salty’s, and Charlestown Cafe. Still checking on others …

I am really big fan of the Metropolitan Market coffee shop. Really fun baristas, good drinks and suprisingly cheap prices (especially based on the location!). As a former barista, I must say though that the Starbucks on Alki APPEARS to be very poorly run. I love Sbux, but I try to stay away from that one.

Oh interesting. I have read the book sharing the same title and that sounds like it would have been interesting. Thanks for the post.

We hired Paul Lewan at Stalwart Plumbing, (206) 713-0474, on the recommendation of some friends. I’m so glad we did! This guy is smart, efficient, straightforward, reasonably priced, and very good at what he does. He’s also an incredibly nice guy. We started off with a basement job and ended us having him repipe our whole house. I can’t recommend him enough. (Oh, and he has Carl Kassel from “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” on his answering machine. If, like Paul and me, you are an NPR geek, you must call him.)

And BL, if you check back, you should be able to edit your profile. I just tested it with this profile (which is NOT the admin profile) and it worked … even changed my password. Thanks for pointing it out.

Testing a different user name … and the “change password” function. Think we’ll launch a separate forum about …. using the forums.

its all about the roaster, starbuck’s is too burnt. Tony’s coffee, supplier to ladro, uptown, verite and others is consistently very good, but can be ruined by the barista. My two citywide favorites are vivacci <sp> and lighthouse. only one of which is used in west seattle. C&P for my lighthouse fix.

I like Caffe Ladro but I must give a shout-out to Bird On a Wire Espresso, on Henderson west of 35th. They will take the time to craft for you a superb cup of joe. Plus I dig the cozy little shop, which has the feel of a family room. Also, as a long-ago former employee of Java Bean, I can attest to acemotel @8’s sentiment that they have both excellent coffee and serious management issues.

Seven Stars Pepper in the ID is great, as is Szechuan Chef in Bellevue. Otherwise, Lee’s is fantastic if you don’t mind that it’s more fusion than Chinese food. Anyone ever eat at Ho-Win on California? I’ve always said I’d give it a try but can’t imagine it’s any good!

I agree that the 35th & Fauntleroy SBUX has bad service. I’ve never had a good or fast experience there (d/t or walk-up), nor has anyone else I know. The Morgan Junction SBUX has much friendlier service and I also like Caffe Ladro ocassionally. Oh, my sister highly recommends the espresso bar in Thriftway…great espresso and more affordable prices.

I thought it was only in our house that the S’bux drivethrough complaints were heard. Sorry to hear that we aren’t alone. Many wrong drinks here as well. Best way to bring about change is to say something, though. Hunt down the manager and say something. They’re not new anymore.

Any recommendations for a talented WS tailor?

I have a few suits that need to be altered. In a perfect world, I would also love to have a few custom garments made.

    Thanks!

I love C&P Coffee Company on California. I’m not that picky about coffee so I can’t offer a critique on that, but I love the funky-cozy atmosphere and the live music.

I would also love to find such a person. In my experience the large plumbing outfits are just an incredible ripoff. Very poor service at incredibly high prices.

Being a former employee for 7 years at a big coffee company, I can tell you that either people go to a coffee place because it’s popular, close by or accustomed to drinking Folgers at home. I don’t say this to be snarky, but ask for just a shot of espresso or solo, next time you go into your favorite coffee place and taste just the espresso and then go to another place and taste theirs and see if you can then tell the difference. This is the best way. I would suggest a place that does not use automated machines (these make the espresso taste awful) that pulls the shots around 16-20 secs. How they roast their coffee and how often they clean their machines plays a big part in this too. Hope this helps!
