I thought having a camera in a phone was ridiculous, but now I couldn’t live without! I take pics of furniture when I’m comparison shopping, house colors I like, interesting plants & landscaping.

Reading the planting strip rules, I see everyone is supposed to get a permit for changing the strips. And generally you’re supposed to leave room for people to get out of their cars. I’ll step on your plants too, and you’d better leave room for my door to open!

Let’s make some kind of flyers to put in store windows around town — maybe some of the businesses that sell handbags would like (!) to donate pieces unsellable junk, ‘er, less popular lines.

People have long realized the synergy of drinking and auctions. Last time I went to a charity auction (for AIDs) I came home with, among other things, an extra appearance on Frasier. I think I bought that after our table’s third bottle of champagne. I’m now not allowed to have custody of the bidding paddle. Ever!

my current cell phone allows me to check real time bus schedules to see how long i might have to wait.. to look up the location of the nearest store when i am looking for something.. to check my google email no matter where i am… and to check google maps when i am lost.. and.. and .. and

didn’t think i would use any of it except if i was traveling.. but i do.

i especially love the note pad. i always have the phone with me and when in a store.. especially a book store.. i can note the titles (or products) i am interested in for later… with books sometimes that means for the library….

it really has made my life simpler… and i am a person who failed at using an electronic personal organizer…

i figured out if i just turn the ringer off i don’t have to be available to any idiot who rings my purse;-> i love that!

I googled “charity auction checklist” and came up with this. It’s vast overkill for what we’re doing, but it might include something silly that we’d forget otherwise. I did it because I’m still and always amazed at how smart google makes me look. Not smart enough for them to want to hire met — yet. But we’re working on it.

Bernicki, that’s a classy attitude. I’m glad you won’t be visiting my place any time soon. I certainly wouldn’t want any inconveniently place plant to suffer your inability to hover, which apparently includes the inability to watch where you step.

As to the parking strip, why argue with the guy? Honestly, the argument that “it’s city property” serves you to what ends? Having the last word?

The City’s provision states “Beautification of planting strips is encouraged” and “A planting strip shall be maintained by the abutting property owner or applicant.” It would seem the property owner would have more interest in the area than your perceived right, or more appropriately the convenience, to allow your pet to eliminate it’s waste.

In my opinion, it makes more sense to simply find another spot, rather than defend the right to make use of it for those purposes. Or, if one needs to draw a little blood, simply pull the dog off the planting strip, direct it to the side-walk to finish it’s business, and say good-day.

I know this is short notice.. but i will be at the Beveridge Place Pub at 2 PM on Saturday… for a planning meeting for the social/fundraising event for the local food bank the following weekend.

I apologize for the short notice.. this is just how it played out.

We can use this thread for ideas/comments on planning as well.. but i need to have a press release ready on sunday to show the owner…

we can have an additional planning meeting if we need to during the week.

anyone is welcome to show up TOMORROW at 2 PM… whether you want to help plan the event or not. We won’t put you to work but would appreciate any ideas.

i will post the consensus from that meeting on this thread tomorrow and you will have the rest of the day to weigh in before i draft a press release sunday morning.

I think the last minute character of this event fits in with the flavor of our forum… it’s our first and we will see how it works.

if it works, combining charity and social events is a great idea and we can do more.

Mission has a decent happy hour as well with drink specials from 5-7 and food specials from 10-around closing time. Cactus is good as well and I think it goes from 4-6 with both food and drink…ideal in the summertime. Talarico’s is great for drinks and $3 slices. Can’t forget Skylark either, probably from 4-6, but I think they may extend it during the summer. So many more, but those quickly come to mind as my old standbys.

I just spoke with the owner at the beveridge Place Pub. He is excited about the idea of an event and we have settled on Sunday, March 16, 2:30 to 4:00 PM…

we will iron out details by email since he had a meeting (looked like “heavy” stuff from the attitudes of the guys i passed on the way out).

But, i think anyone interested in helping put this event together.. or just anyone wanting to get together… should meet this saturday TOMORROW at 2 PM to see if we can get things going.

We can have another meet later in the week, but i am i think i am a grandmother on sunday and nothing disrupts that… and i am generally so tired after that i can’t move.. let alone be sociable.

i will post this planning meeting in a separate thread…

How about Old Bags for Hunger…ha, hya, ha…I’m not serious. It just struck me as funny. Am I weird or not? Anyway, I love this idea..don’t think I have any bags ‘cept the ones under my eyes, but I’ll be there. JoB, give me a call if you want some help. I like the idea of buying tokens. That way those of us without bags can bid too. Or do I have this all confused…I mean I guess you could bid even if you didn’t bring a bag, right?

OK, this Luddite is considering purchasing a cell phone. What are the most important considerations to keep in mind? And if you have any other info to give me, it would be appreciated. I will have to look into the dres for success program. I have lots of clothes that our work cothes that I unfornatley dont quite look right anymore on me.

This is the link for Plymouth Housing. They work with the homeless and getting them into housing and keeping them clean(sober). They always have a need for more items for their welcome baskets. One way my family has started helping is that everytime we stay at a hotel we bring back the small bottle of shampoo and conditionaire and bring it there. It might sound small but htey need it. Just a little food for thought.

I read something in a post above about donating items to charity for women interviewing. I just have to put a plug in for the YMCA’s Dress for Success program. They collect quality interview appropriate clothing to assist women they are assisting in reentering the workforce.

The women in their program get a complete interview outfit for their interviews, then if they get called back for a second interview – they get another outfit. Its a great program.

i confess.. i like alliteration… but i don’t get most “young” or “cool” talk. Hubby does.

Actually, JoB — I think the Obama Unpaid Whatever She Was should be news. It’s called Fair and Balanced — Fox does it all the time. I also think it’s really odd that Saturday Night Live essentially did Hillary promos two weeks in a row. See? I really am firmly planted on the fence, with my tongue in my cheek.

Or, as an old (Tom Lehrer?) song says, “I don’t like anybody very much.” :-)LOLHEHEHEHEHE

My prediction/belief/hope a year ago was that Hill and Obama would destroy each other and Edwards would be there to pick up the pieces and be our next president. (Remember, those damnable polls always showed he was the only Dem who could beat every Republican.) I was half right — about the destruction. Unfortunately, John ran out of money.

tho i disagree about this high road thing… i still think there is a truly valuable use for airing our own dirty linen in the primaries before the republicans get to start pointing fingers… it washes out those who can’t stand up to it.

beachdrivegirl… you are splitting hairs. She was an advisor… and as such her “gaffe” is far more important than that of a paid or unpaid staffer.

You count on Obama finding great advisers in the White House… if she went off on her own… does this bode well for his choices? … because one chooses advisers.

Of course she resigned. Again.. a well worn political gambit… plant the seed.. then resign so the candidate keeps his high road.

i don’t mean to sound so dismissive of Obama, but his campaign really isn’t new to a lot of us who have seen this before… to his credit.. not done as well for a long time.

That said.. she was merely reflecting the trend among Obama supporters that i have been trying to combat here… villianizing Hillary.

I am with Charlabob.. i don’t see why that should be news unless the press is getting fed up with Obama’s “high road” and is going to start poking holes in it… which could get interesting.

Obama has some great qualities as a possible president but i am afraid they are overshadowed by the pedestal so many of his supporters have placed him on.

Will they still support him when they figure out he is just a politician like all the rest? i don’t know. disillusionment is an ugly thing.

If he wins the nomination, his campaign could leave some legacies that will be difficult to deal with come November.

BDG, *Exactly* — the truth doesn’t matter and everyone can twist it to suit their own needs. (The link I found pointing to the “truth” was halfway down the page in my google search.

BTW, I still don’t have a dog in this race — and I’m only happy I don’t have to do anything locally until one of ’em gets nominated. Ask the bob half — when I rage against the television or radio machines, I sometimes say, “we” about Hill and sometimes say, “we”, about Barack. And sometimes say “Throw ’em both under the bus.”

I agree with Rachel Maddow (Air America) — we (the Democratic party) should be running against McCain *already*. If we say it, the press will follow — it’s not like they are leaders or enterprising (sorry, WSB). The Man Barely Got The Nomination! A huge minority or majority of his party can’t stand him. There should be something slightly negative we can think of to say. (Up until the past few weeks, the Democrats had a whole bunch of candidates that almost everyone liked, or could live with…not anymore.)

Historical note: Walter Mondale ran the same campaign with scare ads and a battle over supers (right Ken?) And we all remember President Mondale.

For some reason, this minivan thread made me think of my first car – a 1976 AMC Hornet Sportabout Stationwagon. Imagine a 23 year old punk rocker in NYC driving this monstrosity with woodgrain sides. I remember getting really drunk one night and going out with a can of paint to “fix it” and make it look better. Not that you can make that look much “better,” but I guess that’s where the beer goggles came in. :)
