We have 2 spots open in our 7 person vanpool. Most of us work at or very close to Fred Hutchinson Campus, right off the Mercer St. exit ~ cross streets = Fairview, Aloha, Eastlake Ave.
We meet at 7:30 on Harbor Ave, near the entrance to the WS Bridge (by the X-Gym). The route is 99 to Mercer exit, to So. Lk Union. We typically arrive at the SCCA about 7:50 or so depending on traffic
In the afternoon, we meet just after 4:30 and are usually back in WS by 5:00.
It’s cheaper than a bus pass (about $62/mo), fewer people and alot faster… all while saving gas and eliminating 6 cars from the commute. Plus we’re a friendly bunch too!
email me at wunderbunny@msn.com if interested…
Chief Sealth is putting one on 10/29 – it’s in the Events calendar and will be on the forthcoming all-Halloween list. Last year a radio station had one over on East Marginal Way somewhere, not too far …

I guess I am glad the bag tax didn’t pass because I get a paper sack from the store, line the bottom with a section of the ever-shrinking Seattle Times (currently, folded in half, it fits perfectly) to adsorb liquid, and dump away. An occasional fruit fly but I am of the opinion that a well-aerated sack of vegetable material aerobically decomposes as opposed to fermenting, making it less stinky than a closed container.
Meats go in a smaller paper bag in the freezer until trash day and then join the veggies in the yard waste.
Why has California ave gotten so bad? It almost takes an off road vehicle to drive from Admiral to Morgan Junction. It isnt even winter yet, the time of the year the road traditionally falls apart. What can we do about it. Report the whole thing to the pothole rangers? Maybe its part of the master plan to get us out of our cars by breaking all of them.
I wonder if firms that deal with holiday parties will need help. There’s the company in Admiral that provides faux-gaming tables for parties. There are caterers like Tuxedoes and Tennis Shoes in Fauntleroy. And .. what else?
First, a reminder, we are involved in an experimental partnership with the Times and several other area neighborhood news sites, organized by a national journalism foundation. The make-it-up-as-we-go-along partnership so far has involved little beyond us flagging them when we have stories we think they might want to link on the Times’ home page (recent examples include last weekend’s orca sighting and the Tillicum Village storefront art theft, and the links go directly to the stories here on WSB – they do not repurpose our content on their site, nor vice versa), and them flagging us if they have a story of West Seattle interest in the works. Just in case anyone was wondering.
If our videotaped question(s) for the mayoral debate really does show up in next Wednesday’s broadcast on KING, that’s another result of the collaboration, as KING in turn is a Times partner and they are co-sponsoring the debate, so they came up with the idea to have us neighborhood-news partners (us, My Ballard, Capitol Hill Seattle and Rainier Valley Post) chip in questions.
That said, I do have to say, I don’t think news organizations should waste their time making endorsements. Spend as much time as you can gathering information to present to your “readers”/audience/whomever. THEY make the decisions.
If you read the main news page here avidly, you probably know we have made an exception to our policy and endorsed approval of Referendum 71. But as I said someplace, probably Facebook when we first “announced” that weeks ago, to me that’s not even a political issue … it’s a civil rights issue and I am with those who think it’s astonishing that we are still in a time when rights can be taken away by a vote.
Of course, it hasn’t even been a century since those of us with XX chromosomes even GOT the right to vote (in the US), and the constitutional amendment that was supposed to make sure we would never again be second-class citizens never made it into law. But I digress, as usual.
I don’t believe any of my neighbors are on vacation. I had thought of something like that myself. I just hope wherever she is that she is warm and dry. Pretty nasty rain the last couple of days.
lol, elf, I had not thought of that…
MargL – your post reminded me of David Sedaris’ book Holidays on Ice – his “memoir” of being a Santa’s Elf at the NYC Macy’s. Hysterical!
I think Target would be hiring for the holidays.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2010045585_execenvironment12m.html
“On environmental issues, voters face a clear choice in this race between Dow Constantine and Susan Hutchison for King County executive.
She supports the expansion of a gravel mine on Maury Island; he opposes it. He says climate change is a top priority for the executive, connected to local policies from land use to transportation. She says global warming takes a back seat to public safety and budget issues.
Environmental cred is key in a job where the executive must deal with everything from growth management and land use to endangered species and protecting Puget Sound. The two candidates bring very different work experience to the job — and have engaged very different approaches to environmental issues in the campaign.
Constantine is a lawyer with a master’s degree in urban planning. He spent years both at the forefront and deep in the weeds of environmental policy, first as a member of the Legislature, and now on the Metropolitan King County Council, where he has made land use and environmental issues a central focus.
Hutchison is a former television anchor at KIRO whose most recent work is in leading a philanthropic foundation for the arts and sciences, and heading the board of the Seattle Symphony.”
Obviously, this Seattle Times reporter finds it difficult to take Susan Hutchison’s candidacy seriously. I’m again bewildered by the Times endorsement of a lackluster candidate.
Not West Seattle but the Space Needle is looking for Space Elves for the holidays :-D
I want to earn extra money for the holidays with a part time job in West Seattle, who will be hiring seasonal workers soon?
I watched their “debate” last night. I’m sorry, but she just seemed to have little stories that she could insert to sound credible, i.e., “well, when I met with Gov. Gregoire last month”, etc. It was like name dropping, and she’d smile that little smile of hers that seemed to say, see? I AM qualified. It was hard to believe her, I found.
Good point, JayDee.
I forgot to mention in my earlier post that soils in the PNW tend to have a higher “background” level of naturally occurring arsenic than other parts of the country. Don’t know if it’s enough to register on a standard soil test, and of course the natural levels will vary from place to place.

Our daughter is a very active child and she was once at a bowling party years ago it was too slow for her, she was at a gymnastics party that was alot of fun but the place closed down. A pool party is great is all the kids can swim, not everyone takes swim lessons.
I will definitely check out the roller skating place in Renton, we could also go to Federal Way for roller skating, just wish that West Seattle had a roller skating place. Wish we had a huge van that seated 10-12 kids and we could transport them all no matter the location.
If you build a raised bed, try and refrain from framing the raised bed with treated lumber, the kind with little lines of holes, and ofttimes a greenish tinge. Chrome copper aresenate (a form of Arsenic)is commonly used in treated lumber. Arsenic is very mobile and will leach into the raised bed soil, in my opinion. Real wood will rot, but it will take awhile, and Trex (aside from the plastic component) is another. Put it this way, I would not grow my veggies in a CCA-treated raised bed.
FT –
I am camera shy, but the dog is a total publicity hound. If I am not too busy, maybe we will stop by and I’ll treat him to a cup. Out on the sidewalk, of course, of course.
You could inquire at the South Seattle CC Pastry Shop. They could probably hook you up with some. Or:
Sur La Table has a “kit” http://www.surlatable.com/product/id/160032.do?mr:trackingCode=A867AEDC-D781-DE11-B7F3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA, they’re in the Pike Place market on the corner of Pine, across from Post Alley.
I’m assuming you mean icing fondant rather than poured fondant?
Some place like Metropolitan Market or Thriftway might have a fondant ‘kit’ in their baking products section as well.
Second Wyatt’s Jeweler’s in Westwood Village, I love how they ask for donations to local charities for battery replacement. Friendly service, too.
West Seattle Bridge….native, 49 years – YIKES!
Tuesday the 20th at 3pm we will be having a news crew doing a story on us. We would love to have our customers there with us.
