I know, right? For some reason it makes more sense to me. I mean, I know it isn’t practical to always be outside in Seattle, but being in nature makes me feel more connected to things like that.
I for one am sad they are going to all mail in voting. Ever since my first vote in ’92, I have always loved going to the polls in person and saying hi to everyone there. I always assumed they were unpaid volunteers…..now that I know how little they are paid, that seems kinda true!
Diane, it is ridiculous — elections just moved to their permanent building in Renton — training used to be at an old Boeing building (the one where the Green River Killer was questioned) — more convenient and on bus line.
Last time I did it (two years ago) 11 people voted in 16 hours. My biggest problem was boredom, since the lead at the poll insisted we not read…turns out she was an anomaly, but that metal folding chair got awfully hard after hour 4. :-)
I suspect the pay was geared to little old ladies and gentlemen who thought of it, primarily, as public service and a cool way to see all their neighbors and make a few extra $s.
Since KC is scheduled to go all mail, with a few drop-off locations, they won’t need many poll workers starting in February — so they probably won’t change now.
I hope you still think about doing it — at this point, it’s your chance to be part of history.
I think his ideas are good, obviously so did Brook Shields or she would not have picked him as one of the designers. I think the problem for me was the execution. The shorts made the model look hippy (imagine what they would do to a real woman with hips), they made her thighs look like sausanges and the crotch was bulging. The rest of the look just came off sloppy. I really want to cheer for him, but I am finding it increasingly difficult.
JoB, it’s hard to keep up and I’m nowhere near hip and happening and now, but I’m surprised how much current culture I know (and even like.)
Blayne seems to me kind of out of place in all cultures — maybe a class thing? I love him to bits, and his “designs” are growing on me, but the other designers seem as bemused by him as the grown-ups are. I just figured he was confusing Sergeant and Wendy Pepper. :-)
Going off to start a new thread about generational cultural obsolescence.
Whilst frolicking in the park yesterday evening with the Tall Dude(tm) we happened upon a sandwich board advertising a chapel with an arrow pointed directly into the trees. A little while later we saw what looked like a small church service or bible study group… Just out of curiosity, does anyone know anything about this? I’m not particularly religious myself, but I quite like the idea of worshipping among the trees rather than inside, especially on a gorgeous summer day.
some of us have reached an age where we are really noticing the knowledge gap…
you know that thing Timm Gunn keeps bumping into with Blayne…
but i have to confess, it goes two ways. it’s amazing what i find i don’t know when i am talking with my grandkids…
they treat me like a sweet old doddering thing some times.. ME..
I think i may remember this same thing from my earlier years. i wonder what i missed because i wasn’t smart enough to figure out there were really cool things i didn’t know yet:)
i think Blayne is probably like a lot of young people these days.. they know a great deal about what interests them, but very little about history .. even the history of the fields they are passionate about.
I am sure we weren’t like that ;~>
ever thought about working the polls on election day? I have, and old school, I still take my absentee ballot to drop at my polling place; so I saw all the notices re polling place workers needed, and after calling 2 weeks ago (no response) and applying online last week, finally got frantic calls from KC Elections last night (after they were closed so no way to contact anyone) and today they were calling/emailing me like crazy, here’s the jist
yes I could still work at Alki Community Center on election day; great, sounds fun to me
here’s the catch; these poll workers work from 6am to 10pm; that’s 16 hrs, for $125; by my calculation that’s less than min wage; ok, I’d still do it
but here’s the big catch that they did not inform me until 10 mins on the phone setting up all the arrangements for the day; prior to election day, poll workers have to go all the way to Renton ($10 gas) for couple hours training on Monday, in order to work that 16 hr day on Tuesday
no wonder they’re still trying to find poll workers; this is ridiculous
Not to mention that it is the law, pedestians have the right of way in Washington State.
WAC 132E-16-040
Pedestrians — Right of way.
(1) Stopping for pedestrian. The operator of an approaching vehicle shall stop and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross the roadway within a crosswalk unmarked or marked when the pedestrian is upon or within one lane of the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or onto which it is turning.
I love how people pretend like they do not even see you when you are half way through the intersection. I cross 35th at Snoqualmie almost daily and rarely does anyone stop. A big shout out to those that do!
the headline sez it all! i’d like to try some of these spots but it would be easier if i knew where they are.
there should be a stoplight at the corner of calif.ave and college street! almost everyday i see people almost hit trying to cross there in a MARKED CROSSWALK! drivers are to busy on cellphones and just not caring that folks are trying to cross! it BURNS ME UP!

A bit of inspiration for those who have not mailed you ballot back yet or await the polling day.
CountingCoup, I did understand that you weren’t saying the Bike Project was like the separate paths WSMom was wishing for. My comment was directed at TR, because I was hoping she knew about something I didn’t. If there’s any such possibility, I want to know about it so I can support it!
(BTW, I also support the city bike plans (with reservations about whether sharrows might be a waste of money), however inadequate. Perfection is the enemy of the good.)
The Bellevue Square Sanrio store carries a whole line of Hello Kitty and Hello Kitty friends stuff. Yes, I am a Hello Kitty Junkie :) Also Uwajimaya and Magic Mouse Toys downtown Seattle carry some Hello Kitty stuff.
Good luck!
I don’t believe I’m asking this :-) but I *need* to find a little “Hello Kitty” ™ stuffed cat — I’ll bandage her paw and give her to a wounded friend. Anywhere in WS (or beyond) them? There was a whole hello kitty store in the junction — google didn’t seem to find it.
Thanks!
His designs are consistently solid…
here’s hoping he learns to listen more to what the his brief is.
they want a designer with a point of view.. but also one that can handle a wide variety of challenges…
i think his integrity saved him this time.
Ashex is right about the history of this conflict even though it is more complex and Byzantine than any newspaper can do justice to.
Russia is acting in Russia’s interest as they see it. Georgia seems to have misinterpreted the situation of had help misinterpreting the situation.
Curious that both Karl Rove and Condi Rice have made extensive visits to Georgia in the preceding weeks.
Mccain’s advisor on the issue is a member of PNAC.
More fun is probably in the pipeline. (pun intended)
You mean to say that Republicans are all crooks too? My, my…
Funny, Ron — except three Repubs concurred with the count or saw no probable cause to challenge: King County Attorney, Norm Maling, Secretary of State Sam Reed, and (fired for it) Federal Prosecutor. John McKay. Or are they all Democratic Plants?
JoB I was simply commenting on what he said; which had more to do with his assumptions on my position on these topics.
I’m not looking for people repeating what has already been said I am asking for the individual opinions of the people who browse this forum. (Note the topic of this thread)
I see no connection between eugenics and a politician accomplishing __ many goals that he set out to. (regardless of who the politician was, or what the goals were)
Perhaps you’ve been mis-reading my comments as well?
If someone is born with two penises, no legs, a detrimental health dis-order leading to death if not medicated, death at birth, mental retardation etc That is not genius.
The point to eugenics is to weed out that which isn’t helpful in our genes.
People who have no personal experience in a specific matter rely on second hand sources and poorly written history to claim their “expert” status. That in no way makes them an authority, granted they know more than the average Joe might about [insert subject here that pre-dates our current society].
The point in me “dismissing” his authors was I wasn’t asking for references, I want individual opinions and free-thought flowing from the minds of the people on this board. Again, hence the title of the thread.
And JoB if people would read what I’m linking/writing we wouldn’t have to constantly discuss who mis-understood what and why.
Not that I don’t appreciate Ken’s input, I recognize he’s giving me an opportunity to educate myself, but I was specifically asking for the opinions of everyone here. And I admit the first time a read Ken’s comment I took offense because at first glance it came off as extremely condescending, thus my response.
Count? Three of them! That’s just how the Democrats work when they control the election board. Keep counting until you get a result you like…
We cant say enough good things about the West Seattle YMCA pre-school program. There may be a waiting list, but hey it wont hurt to check them out.
