“Dobro: “You won’t be getting any of that from Ted Cruz. ” Why? Because you say so? Actual track record seems to tell a different story unless you get all your news from MSNBC and Politico.”

Well, first of all I don’t watch MSNBC and don’t read Politico. My recollection of Cruz’ track record has more to do with his efforts to shut down gov’t, repeal the ACA, reverse same sex marriage, etc. details of which are available at many news outlets. So, true, my interpretation of his track record isn’t based on his brief time at the FTC as explained in your article from right-wing news outlet PJ Media.

“Since1890 free markets don’t always end up in monopolies–because of antitrust.”

In other words, because of gov’t regulation. Which means its not a free market, its a govt regulated market. Kind of like I said earlier. Glad you agree.

“Maintaining a free market (in modern terminology) requires regulation to promote fair competition. Fair competition keeps wages high and prices low.”

In other words, maintaining a free market requires having a not-free market. Promoting fair competition means having a gov’t regulated market. Why not just admit that the term “free market” is baloney, leave behind the loaded terms and discuss reality? Reality being the fact that capital markets must be regulated, and what we’re talking about is how to do that properly so that it works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.

“Socialism is about the forced redistribution of wealth.”

I’ll take a page from your book- Why? Because you say so? Socialism is about creating and maintaining systems that work for the common good and are funded and used by all people. There are plenty of examples of this working out well in the Western world (think fire dept., roads, police, etc) so I’ll leave you to your Google if you want specifics.

“Since LBJ, the US has spent trillions of taxpayer dollars on the “War Against Poverty”. Five decades later, the result is more poor people in America than ever before.”

I’m sure you know that a lot of other things have happened since LBJ, like offshoring of our manufacturing base, wages not nearly keeping up with profits and productivity, slashing of the social safety net, wealth capture by the .01 per cent with no “trickle down” effect, and much more, that have a lot to do with the state of poverty in this country. And all of that going on while we still maintain our status as the richest country in the history of mankind. It’s disgraceful, really, and not in the way you’re describing.

“Poor people need to be given the chance to lift themselves out of poverty by having the incentive to learn and innovate so they can build careers or start businesses.”

The idea that poor people have no “incentive” to get out of poverty is paternalistic, disrespectful, and, frankly… well, I’ll just go back to Why? Because you say so?

Dobro: “You won’t be getting any of that from Ted Cruz. ” Why? Because you say so? Actual track record seems to tell a different story unless you get all your news from MSNBC and Politico. Hillary is the biggest monopoly advocate in the race. She is a huge believer in crony corporatism because that’s where she has gotten all her money over the years.

Since1890 free markets don’t always end up in monopolies–because of antitrust. You seem to be confusing free-market regulation with socialism ideology when they are really diametrically opposed concepts. Sustainable free market design is NOT laissez faire capitalism. Maintaining a free market (in modern terminology) requires regulation to promote fair competition. Fair competition keeps wages high and prices low.

Socialism is about the forced redistribution of wealth. Since LBJ, the US has spent trillions of taxpayer dollars on the “War Against Poverty”. Five decades later, the result is more poor people in America than ever before. Tax the income of the rich at 100% and it won’t be a drop in the bucket towards solving the poverty problem in America.

Poor people need to be given the chance to lift themselves out of poverty by having the incentive to learn and innovate so they can build careers or start businesses. Not all will do it, but if some do, they will create jobs for others and there will be a whole lot less poor people to subsidize.

    Merry Christmas!

smitty: i watched a republican debate last month (not my first) and at one point i turned to my wife and said – kinda slack-jawed – “they’re actually talking about new public works and infrastructure programs.” they all sounded like eisenhower. it was pretty funny.

but at the next debate they were all hatey and tough again, and talking about how social security needed to be fixed by wall street and how we have to use our $multi-trillion military to fight a bunch of destitute jihadist thugs.

like we’ve forgotten what they did to private pensions while they were gutting public pensions. or iraq.

no, i don’t read huffpo. or kos. or NYT. or wapo. i detest msnbc. don’t listen to NPR. can’t get no air ‘merica because the media is run by big money.

i really don’t give a rip what a bunch of 6- and 7-figure “presenters” think, anyway. same with people on facebook, for that matter.

i watch 30-60 minutes of KIRO per day while i wake up and drink coffee. i read various non-blingy/advertisey news sites. i love the onion. also, too. colbert. c-span is the best comedy network going.

and (to bring it back to the original topic) no, i don’t hate hispanics.

    i hate canadians.

    kidding!

by the way, we’re all waiting with bated breath to hear you and HMC reporting on the electricity at the local republican caucuses in ’16. can’t wait!

maybe you should come catch the dem caucuses. if they’re anything like 2008, they’ll be an entertaining food fight.

    Hello!

We are looking for a full time (8:15-5:15, M-F) assistant teacher to work in our at home family child care located in West Seattle. We will have about 7-8 toddlers/preschoolers and 2 infants in care and are looking for someone to work alongside our two very experienced head teachers. We are looking for someone who shares our philosophy that children learn best through active play. Our ideal candidate will enjoy singing, dancing, reading with enthusiasm, crawling on the floor, painting, building block structures, asking questions, encouraging language, rocking babies and children, etc. There will be some responsibilities to help with cleaning and food preparation.

    Must be able to:

    – Pass a background check

    – Take a TB test

    – Become CPR/First Aid certified

    – Get a food handlers permit

    – Take an online class about child development and child care

    – Do all the physical tasks needed to care for infants and toddlers, including lifting up to 30 lbs. and be able to get down on the ground and crawl.

    – Read, write and speak in English

We would consider a candidate who does not have a lot of experience in the child care profession. Our experienced teachers can train the assistant on our philosophy, curriculum, and child development. We are looking for someone who loves kids, has an easy going personality, and is interested in working in this environment. We are particularly interested in candidates who live in or near West Seattle

Scholarships are available for our assistant through the Early Achiever Program for coursework for an associates or bachelors degree in early childhood family studies. We will also pay for all certificates and trainings needed to do this program. Ongoing training experiences are also available for our assistant, if interested.

Please email us with a copy of your resume and a paragraph or two about your experience working with children and your interest in this position. We hope to interview candidates by December 30th, with a start date of January 7th.

    Thank you for your time.

Just wanted to share–my boyfriend is horrendously ill and my coworker was out last week due to norovirus. We work in the same building, albeit different floors in West Seattle.

I’m starting to feel sick, and just as a PSA–wash your hands. It’s one of the most contagious bugs out there. If you’re sick, please stay home and only go back 48-72 hours after symptoms stop. (That means a week off of work!)

Bleach is the only thing to kill it and norovirus can live on surfaces for up to 2 weeks. (Lysol and Clorox wipes do not work–much to my chagrin.)

Hate to be the tummy virus alarmist, but our household doesn’t wish this on anyone, ever. It’s gross.

i second the homeless in Seattle recommendation.

call them and ask to speak with Rex Holbein… Or if that makes you uncomfortable… visit the Homeless in Seattle facebook page to learn more about what they do.

Whether you choose to donate your car to them or not, i can’t think of a better investment of time than a chat with Rex.

Mike, thank you….I had read that earlier. Rex Hohlbein..a truly wonderful, gentle man, who lives his life helping others at Homeless in Seattle. Dear sna…what would you want the city to withold? Food? A place to feel safe while trying to get a bit of sleep? Do we give them a ticket out of town? Not let them sit down anywhere in the downtown corridor? More questions? Do you have a roof over your head, a warm bed, food to eat? Imagine losing all that…and then having someone suggest that some services, etc. should be withheld. One thing you’re right about…there are no easy answers.

In your rush to judgment, red, you seem to have missed the part of my methodology that filters out o indoor cans, which is only an issue one day a week anyway. However, I can see others than Val have the ‘throw it on the street’ response. So, operation ‘throw it back on the roof’ is a definite go! Hope you have a ladder!

You know how some things start under past social norms, or at an acceptable level, and become customary- but then morph into something altogether different? Like tossing spent cigs. In the past, cigarette butts were discarded where they were smoked, and weren’t considered litter (by smokers, anyway). But butts are trash! The problem is, it’s always been done this way, so get over it, right?! (No, it’s still litter..)

People imposing their dogs on others is another situation that started out at a tolerable rate of occurrence, but has gotten way out of hand! It’s not new, but it was never like this before! When I was a kid, we left our dogs at home, and they were happy to see us return. The only person that took their dog downtown, or out to dinner, was Zsa Zsa Gabor! And nobody picked up dog poop, but it didn’t matter- because volume was low, and the impact negligible. But now, everyone has dogs, and they wouldn’t dare visit the dentist/hardware store/coffee shop without them! Suddenly people cried- there’s too much crap! So, owners were forced to make a cursory attempt at picking up the crap. But, that doesn’t always work for a variety of reasons, and- there’s still too much crap! And just like cigarette butts are litter- poop is poop, and pee is pee (even from a dog). If I walked by your house every day, and pissed on your mailbox- you’d lose your mind! If I took a dump in front of Starbucks, and then (hopefully) picked up most of it in a plastic baggie- they’d have me arrested, and then have crime scene cleaners in hazmat suits dispatched to remove the planter boxes!! And rightly so- because pee is pee, and butts are litter, and what was once manageable (like service dogs assisting disabled people), has spiraled wildly out of control.

In my apartment building we have a large bin underneath the mailboxes for recycling. It is stuffed full of the political mailers. Most people aren’t even taking them upstairs to their homes before tossing them. I’m one of them – right from mailbox into the bin. Thankfully I haven’t received any phone calls this election, which surprises me. Watch they all call this afternoon now. :)

I just don’t even bother answering the phone any more. Wish I could just get rid of it entirely.

As for the mailers, on Tuesday of last week I received NINETEEN of them on one day. Yup, you read that right. They barely fit in my mailbox. This practice is an atrocious waste, on every level.

Sorry this is so long. The last part on what we can do is very cool.

Several weeks ago my indoor only cat was diagnosed with E.coli, most likely brought into my home through gardening.

For all, that like to kid themselves that it is great for the environment, a resounding NO it is not!

    Seattle.gov:

    Pet Waste

Scoop it, bag it and trash it – even in your yard!

    What’s the problem?

We have more than 125,000 dogs and 60,000 outdoor cats in Seattle! That amounts to about 50,000 lbs of pet waste every day!

Left on streets, curb strips and in yards and parks, pet waste can be carried by rainwater to storm drains and into our creeks, lakes and Puget Sound without treatment. It is one of the leading causes of bacterial contamination in our streams and causes other water quality problems just like livestock manure and fertilizer.

There are bacteria and micro-organisms in pet waste such as Roundworms, E. coli, and Giardia that can make people sick if they’re ingested. Some can last in your yard for as long as four years if not cleaned up. Children who play outside and adults who garden are at greatest risk of infection. If pet waste is washed into the storm drain it ends up in lakes, streams or marine water, and people can accidentally swallow bacteria and other disease-causing organisms while swimming or playing in the water. These bacteria also end up in shellfish, and can make the people who eat them very sick.

    Here’s the solution

    1. Scoop the poop,

    2. Put it in a plastic bag,

    3. Place it in the trash, and

    4. Wash your hands

    Did you know?

    • 87% of pets use their back yards and 48% of the people in King County say they don’t always properly dispose of pet waste at home.

    • A single gram of pet waste, the size of a pea, contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria.

    What should I do?

    • Put pet waste in a plastic bag, seal it, and throw it in the garbage- not in the yard waste! There are also Mutt Mitt (pdf) dispensers located around the City. The next time you’re out walking your pet, take advantage of this free resource to help keep our waterways clean.

    • Cat litter should be bagged and placed in the trash. Do not flush it down the toilet.

    Get involved

    • Purchase a pet waste baggie dispenser and bags for your street. Available online or in pet supply stores (these are not supplied or maintained by the City).

    • Spread the word about the importance of picking up pet waste. Print an I Poop poster from the Puget Sound Starts Here website and ask a local business to post it.

What if pet waste isn’t picked up?

It’s bad for your health, our waterways, and potentially your pocketbook! There are laws in Seattle to protect our health and our environment which require pet waste to be picked up and disposed of properly.

    SMC 9.25.082

    (A) Allowing the accumulation of feces (civil infraction, $109.00 fine)

I wish some of the lurkers, the newbies, those who don’t post often, or maybe disagree, would come to one of these varied meetups…face to face is so different, getting to really know the person aside from maybe disagreeing about politics on here…it changes things. People are more than what they write anonymously on a forum. As many of you know, JoB and I are good friends…because of these forums(fora? fori?lol). And last night after I got home i remembered the first time we met, and what we did that evening…and it was only 5 bucks!) And a friendship was born.
