sam-cParticipantWow- the thread has really exploded since the last time I saw it, it only had 6 posts. Anyway…..I think it is rude to put bagged poop in someone else’s garbage can. Here’s why.
We have a dog. he poops in our yard (if we go for a walk, we pick up his poop and bring it home- he’s a small dog with small poop so it doesn’t really seem to bother me on our walk. I could see how carrying a bag of great dane poop might be a little different on a 1 mile walk)
ANYWAY. we always put the dog poop in OUR garbage can. and guess what? SPU/ Waste management never picks it up. What I think they do is: take lid off, see large black garbage bag, pull bag out, and drive on. I don’t think they pick up and dump our garbage can. After a couple weeks of this (and the awful smell that goes along with it), I got tired of the smell of a few weeks worth of doggie bags piled at the bottom of the trash can, emptied the garbage can of dog poo bags into a garbage bag so they would finally pick up all the dog poop. Disgusting task. So NO- don’t put bags of dog poo in someones else’s garbage can cause it doesn’t always get picked up in a timely manner….Garbage wouldn’t actually smell that bad as long as you don’t have dogs or babies in diapers… I mean… most of the stinky things go in compost…

There, Ron Swanson, I fixed that for you. Some sort of hierarchy about which private garbage cans are OK to dump dog waste into is ludicrous. And strike #4 entirely. Private garbage cans are off limits no matter how long they have been there.
My two year old doesn’t have complete control of her bodily functions (yet). When it is time for a change when we are out and about we pack that securely bagged (in an odor absorbent bag specifically designed for that purpose, not some hacked up grocery bag) diaper back home with us about 99% of the time. Never once, with either of our kids, have we tossed the diaper in anything but a park garbage can or one in a public restroom, and even that was very rarely.
Every children’s clinic I have ever been to has many signs up telling you in no uncertain terms to take those dirty diapers home with you. If a children’s clinic doesn’t want a dirty child’s diaper in their garbage can, what makes you dog owners think that I want the waste from your random dog in my garbage can.
Here’s a basic rule of civilized, Western society, one that is so basic you probably haven’t even thought of it. We don’t go uninvited into each others homes and drop a deuce in the garbage can or the toilet without flushing. If dog owners want their dogs to be thought of as humans (which seems to be the trend- see, for example, random lap dogs in grocery stores) then it’s time dogs start following that rule as well.

Ron SwansonMemberYou know, Val, I don’t think of my dog as a human. I don’t bring him to the grocery store. We don’t go anywhere except public right of way uninvited. These happen to be full of waste receptacles!
I also don’t think of “private” garbage cans as part of a house, or a children’s clinic(!?), or anywhere else waste doesn’t go. If it ain’t full, and it ain’t a can whose clean exterior that says ‘I’m crazy enough to keep this in the house’, it’s fair game.
And the “civilized, *Western* society” remark (emphasis added) sounds a whiff racist to me, just sayin. Although to be fair, somewhere on a Cantonese message board, Hong Kongers are ranting about mainlanders who let their kids crap on the street. Now there’s a real first world problem!

melissa: poop is not garbage. it’s poop. we have a municipal sewer system for dealing with poop.
it’s real simple:
1. pick up your dog’s turd.
2. take it home and flush it.
or flush it at starbucks. or put it in your garbage. or eat it. i don’t care what you do with it. you obviously don’t want it, and neither do i… and you own and love your dog! i don’t. so maybe you can understand my antipathy toward your dog’s bowel movements.

Ron SwansonMemberIn your rush to judgment, red, you seem to have missed the part of my methodology that filters out o indoor cans, which is only an issue one day a week anyway. However, I can see others than Val have the ‘throw it on the street’ response. So, operation ‘throw it back on the roof’ is a definite go! Hope you have a ladder!
(You can take solace you’re not that poor lady in Albuquerque who constantly gets pizzas thrown on her roof)

wsea98116ParticipantIf you can’t get behind any other reason not to force your poop on someone, how about this one- they don’t want it. You don’t have to decide if it’s rational, ethical, or responsible- it’s their can/yard/whatever. If you want to produce poop away from home, take it back home. You don’t want it, don’t bring it- It’s so very simple, I don’t know how many ways people can tell you they don’t want your crap- That’s good enough! If you gift your crap anyway, you’re just being a jerk!
Also, if you can’t stop your dog from crapping in front of a restaurant or peeing on a bench, you are either inconsiderate, or too weak and feeble to be in control of an animal in a public place.

Don’t. Our sewage/water system is not designed for this. The bacteria present in dog feces are terrible for the creatures in the Sound and that’s just where many of those bacteria end up if you flush. So, bag, then garbage, please.

My dog may evacuate at any given moment, in any place, and they have no control whatsoever. As his keeper, I am completely ineffectual. I have no influence over this situation, but I can’t bear to leave him at home! Here you go, everyone- enjoy my pets poop and pee! What? You don’t want it?! Too bad.. Besides their poop is clean and hygienic- and they always wipe their butt with their face! (Unless they have worms- in which case, they wipe their butt with your carpet.)

NorthwestParticipant2nd post now on this thread: Not on topic of dog poop but same disregard of public space and community is the obvious cigarette butt litter produced from Oregon 42 apartments in the junction neighborhood ,I have contacted management about it which they said to me clearly ” our policy is no smoking on property with our tenants” and when asked what they could do to prevent the litter that’s obviously generated from this aprox 150 unit apartment complex ” its a city problem not ours”. Today while on a walk to bus amounted to at least half a case of butts litter beside the sidewalk both sides. It’s sad that this seems to be acceptable public behavior now.

SniperKittyParticipantI fail to see how this is so complicated. If you are the dog owner, that poop is yours to deal with. It is your responsibility to clean it up and dispose of it in the appropriate location (public garbage can or your garbage can at home). If you can’t find a public garbage can or dumpster, take it with you. Nobody asked you to fling your animal’s feces into my garbage can.
That said, I think pulling it out of the garbage and throwing it onto the street in anger is a bit over the top. I have to admit though that when I saw someone left a plastic bag of dog crap in my yard next to the sidewalk, I got pissed and kicked it into the road (hey, I ain’t touching it). I feel a bit bad about it, but still the dog owner is the one in charge of their dog’s waste management. The only poo I’m responsible for cleaning is in my cat’s litterbox (and the dog poo on my shoes since I apparently have a knack for stepping in it lately).

I’ll go on picking up my own dog’s crap, other dog’s crap, bottles, cans, and random bits of trash I see out walking, and it’s all going into the nearest can and not into the sound. No. Those reading I suggest you take a walk along 42nd ave sw south of sw Oregon st and see for yourself and please contact management. The cigarette litter is being generated from tenants there I know have seen them congregate smoke and litter in that very spot.

redblackParticipantron: yeah, my cans are only out from 6 am to 4 or 5 pm on tuesdays, depending on when i get home. and i have found dog turds in all 3 empty cans, and missed one that made my garage smell like dog crap for a week.

it’s painfully obvious that some people feel entitled to do what they want, despite their neighbors’ protestations, kind requests, hostile demands, or accusations of crassness. nothing phases them. we have become a nation of rude jerks who think everything is funny.
thanks for further eroding my faith in the basic decent nature of humanity, and for confirming that people really don’t give a crap – unless you don’t want them to.
melissa: all right, that’s a good point, and it goes to the root of the matter about basic respect for public resources.
but i have to tell you that i have seen the traps at west point, and i think dog feces is a relatively minor thing to flush. you would not believe the things that a million people send down the crapper, including pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs, poisons, tampons, condoms, aligators, toys, dead goldfish…
none of those things are good for the bay.
thank $god that the brown water is heavily treated.
so i guess i’ll just ask you self-entitled poo flingers to kindly keep your toxic waste to yourselves, or make sure it gets to the landfill yourselves.
it’s your turd. you deal with it. don’t expect me to do it for you.

To be clear, I don’t think I, or many here if any, have said that dog owners should place their crap in any random trash can, to say nothing of recycle to compost cans. It is absolutely bad manners. That said, I would prefer it in my can rather than stepping in it, given a choice, and history has certainly dictated that I frequently don’t get one…I step in it.
As to the poop flinging; the unfortunate reality, for everyone who engages in it, is that it’s littering…and crazy. If someone placed trash in your trash can illicitly would your reaction be to hurl it in the street? Probably not, so how do you rationalize this as being different, because it’s poop and you don’t like it?
The poop flingers are similar to the people that don’t clean up after their dog or dispose of their poop appropriately; there are more people who do it right than not. It’s a bother, it’s gross…and it’s just going to happen. Scofflaws aren’t new and my barking at them isn’t going to change their behavior anymore than reading an angry thread in the a faceless forum, believe me, I’ve done it.
Additionally, I’ve never read any statement here claiming that their dogs poop was clean or hygienic, WS98116, just that it was less of a health hazard than cat poop (just a reminder, since you’re the one who claimed I was misrepresenting what you said).
For the record, I’ve yelled at walkers in bike lanes that are marked only for bikes, as I race past them at 20mph, yelled at other cyclists for running stop signs and red lights, while on my bicycle, stood in front of cars driving too fast down my street to have pointed conversations with the drivers (and been flipped off many times) and dressed down people for not having dogs on leashes. I’m an all purpose busy body but as I’ve gotten older I’ve started to pick my battles more wisely asI don’t have the time and/or energy I used to. The illicit poop in my trash can is just something that I deal with because the people that put it there are already so self absorbed that they will dismiss what I have to say out of hand. If I were to fling it, it would be at them after seeing them in the act…but that’s assault and that is something else I don’t have the time or energy to deal with.
