redblackParticipanti have a ’97 VW golf that i want to donate… to someone.
have any of you readers donated a car before?
i’d prefer that it goes to a charity that will fix it and use it, because it doesn’t deserve to be flattened and scrapped, or sold to some hayseed at auction. it still runs, and only heavy artillery fire would stop the motor. so i want it to go somewhere where a running vehicle is valued above cash donation.
i’ve done some leg work on the internet, but i can’t get the answers i seek.
any help is appreciated.
grazie.

jissyParticipantHey red…. Thought I remembered my Pops donating a truck once upon a time, luckily he was over for Thanksgiving today to chat. He has donated 4 vehicles total, 2 trucks, a car & a recreation trailer. He has donated to Volunteers of America 2 or 3 times, he can’t remember the other organization(s) as its been awhile. He said if a vehicle is fixable they will and then sell it, not sure they can guarantee that though until they have it and can really check it out.

hollyplaceParticipantCheck out Homeless In Seattle on FaceBook. They do some amazing work helping people who really need it. They often have mechanics volunteer or work at a reduced rate to help people who need a vehicle to get to and from a job, or many that live in them.

JoBParticipanti second the homeless in Seattle recommendation.
call them and ask to speak with Rex Holbein… Or if that makes you uncomfortable… visit the Homeless in Seattle facebook page to learn more about what they do.
Whether you choose to donate your car to them or not, i can’t think of a better investment of time than a chat with Rex.

miwsParticipantI third the suggestion of HinS. (Thanks for suggesting it, hollyplace.)
And I agree with Jo; Rex is a great guy to chat with.
I think the two of you will hit it off very well, with your generous, strong preference to donate to a person in need. Rex has a very similar kind and generous spirit.

redblackParticipantthanks. i emailed homeless in seattle’s info@ address with the particulars last saturday, and they still haven’t responded.
metrognome had a good idea (his post was a victim of the WSB site rollback) and that was to contact schools that have auto shops with “fix and give” programs.

hollyplaceParticipantRedblack, I just received an email back from HIS about our Girl Scout troop sponsoring a family. I had sent the email a couple weeks ago. It sounded like they are overwhelmed a little with the cold weather and trying to help as many people as they can and trying to sort through the amped up emails and offers that come during the holidays. I think you will hear back, it just may take a little longer than unusual. Your offer is such a generous one and there are so many people in need. I was just thinking of another way to donate it. I wonder if you went to a restaurant, or store if a manager would have an idea of somebody that was struggling and could really use the car. They would know who was working hard and could use a hand up. A principal at a school might have an idea too. They work hand in hand trying to help families support their kids.

JoBParticipantredblack. i can’t give you a tax write off but i can make sure that your car gets to someone who will treasure it.

redblackParticipanti don’t necessarily need the write-off. i’d value the car at $500, so any benefit would be negligible.
full disclosure, though:
1997 golf GL. 2.0 8-valve engine. 5-speed manual. 25/32 mpg. 175,000 miles. black.
easy maintenance (oil/filters, belts, plugs.) cheap tabs. cheap insurance. always passes emissions, but probably due for a muffler.
the car has minor issues that hans VW could fix pretty quickly that i simply don’t have time to chase down. most importantly, the turn signals are a little wonky. bad wiring harness somewhere? there’s a minor fluid leak that i’ve looked for but can’t source. definitely not the head or valve cover. the valves are starting to tick – probably time to switch to a heavier oil grade. the body needs TLC – mainly a good wash and wax; minor dings, but nothing embarrassing. for a city car that has been taking me to construction sites for 15 years, it’s not bad.
here’s the good:
new tires. new heater core, hoses, water pump, and timing belt at 150,000 miles. good battery from schwab; the generator is original but still going strong. 2014 blaupunkt am/fm/aux/usb digital receiver from crutchfield. (the factory tape deck shit the bed. sorry!) the speakers still sound great. the engine is strong and responsive. the sunroof still works.
comes with bentley and chilton service manuals, snow chains, and a couple essential tools – like the spark plug socket.
i’ve always put bosch oil filters, castrol GTX, and audi/VW belts in it, but hans did the last oil change. $35 and 30 minutes, i think.
like i’ve said, someone of little means but with the inclination to keep it running can have it.

AlkimommyMemberRedblack- I have a chronic illness and a toddler. My abusive husband left us not even a week ago with no money or car. I am urgently trying to get on my feet and have no family or friends to help me and my son. My son and I could really use your car. I can verify all that I’ve said here.
