There’s technically no difference in an HD antenna and regular rabbit ears. They both will get all of the over-the-air HD stations and if your TV can take HD (HD tuner), then they will be in HD.

Since the beginning of this whole crapfest I call the HD conversion, I’ve been using my old rabbit ears, hooked up to that $50 box. I do have a set of rabbit ears that are powered, meaning they are amplified by plugging them into an outlet. Still not and HD antenna.

Again, all you need are rabbit ears, albeit they might not be the best design for signal grabbing, don’t fall into the marketing of “needing and HD antenna”, that’s a load of hooey.

    c@lbob..

    how can you say that?

republicans like Rossi think it is perfectly reasonable that those with money make big bucks off our current economic chaos …

and will be delighted to accept those kickbacks to help them find more ways to keep those dollars rolling in…

    for them that has…

    for them that has not..

well they should just work longer and harder …

    after all ..

this is America where everyone knows the streets are paved with gold

after all.. if a guy like Rossi can get rich off of political kickbacks and favors.. anyone can.

i can’t speak for anyone else.. but i am a reasonably educated woman who didn’t know that the term tea-bagger had any implications other than the tea-bag party until i was informed of some homosexual connotation here.

i still don’t know what that connotation is.. nor am i the least bit interested in finding out. i suspect like other group specific slang it that one will be buried in obscurity long before the political movement that labeled themselves tea-baggers.

    charlabob..

when i speak of democratic advertising i am speaking of selling a bill that has more benefit to the health insurance industry than to middle class americans struggling to pay for health care bills as health reform.

to be honest i don’t watch the political ads on eighter side unless they come into my mailbox.. and even then it is a toss up as to whether i watch or delete…

i wouldn’t have approved of Alan Grayson labeling his opponent taliban but sure would have enjoyed seeing it ;)e

I use State Farm Brian Schiffer 206-937-7700. I have been with State Farm for 20 years.

I got my license later in life (25) and they were the only one who would take me. I didn’t want to be on my parents policy so I went to a family friend Ted DelBianco an he got me a policy.

After he retired Brent Amacher (?sp) took over his clients and I really didn’t like his customer service.

Then I met Brian and found out he was state farm and liked his personality and asked a few questions and had him transfer my policy to his office. Been really satisfied ever since.

If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him.

    —Voltaire

the accepted meaning of the quote, based on other writings of Voltaire, is that current (current in his lifetime anyway) societies needed some unifying philosophy to keep the peons in line. A carrot/stick combo that could not be tested in the real world and yet could be enforced against those who got out of line via the authority of the state/monarchy/emporor in conjunction with the priesthood. Note, this theory is supported by evidence in all the precursor religions of the ancients via the kings/chiefs/headmen of the ancient world and the Popes/witchdoctors/shaman who collaborated and shared the power with them and via the universal concepts of heresy, blasphemy, and witchcraft as tools to cull the insufficiently faithful.

The natural world with its plagues, storms and earthquakes needed an explanation and religions/myths provided them.

“If people are good only because they fear punishment, and hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed.”

    — Albert Einstein

“A myth is a religion in which no one any longer believes.”

    Johnnyblegs,

I just got a blu-ray player for about $160 that connects to my wireless router, accesses netflix, some hulu movie site, another pay-per-view type service, pandora, mlb.tv, and a couple of other things. Links to my computer wirelessly, too, so I can look at any pictures/videos/files I have on there. All operated via the remote control.

That sound at all like what you are after?

Job, whether availability is due to a state-run shop or a private enterprise says nothing in and of itself about how many places you can buy it. Grocery stores are subject to zoning regulations and laws governing what can be sold where, just like any other business. They may well lobby to increase the legal density of suppliers, but that’s a separate albeit related issue.

Of COURSE grocery stores want to sell alcohol. They’re in the business of making money, and this is a way for them to do that. I’m not sure what’s so inherently troubling about this.

but when the alcoholic content of a beverage rises.. the level of intoxication inevitably follows.

Really? Inevitably? Can you point to some evidence for that? (Anecdotes are not evidence. The plural of anecdote is not data.)

I notice that the site that you link to has a stated and obvious agenda, and cites no studies more recent than 2003. I’m in favor of sources that don’t consider a question closed at the outset.

I’m not quarreling with what it says, though. The very article that I cited comes to similar conclusions re: the prevalence of liquor outlets and alcohol-related crime. But let me also point out that nowhere did I argue that the number of liquor outlets ought to be increased. I actually do believe that there should be clearly defined regulations as to how many liquor outlets can be in a given area.

However, I don’t believe that it should be the government running them. Selling liquor is not something that I consider the purpose of government. Maintaining civic infrastructure, providing necessary public services, maintaining social order, and creating and enforcing laws are some of its duties. I really don’t see where selling booze comes into it.

if i could.. i might join those on the mall in Washington DC on October 30 just to see what Stewart and Colbert could get up to…

but beyond the humor.. this idea intrigues me. a rally or meet up or get together designed to foster feeling good about being part of a community that talks to one another.. instead of fights.

For me.. this sense of community and ability for a broad range of people to discuss ideas has been the forum’s largest draw.

There is a rally to restore sanity Seattle event happening at Westlake that has already secured 2000+ participants… and i could attend that.

but i long for something local…

“just like a chat room only live”

is this a good idea for a forum members meet-up?

should we invite West Seattle or just forum members?

How do people feel about Alki?

any ideas about a good space there?

should this include some way to donate to our local food bank?

    Should we include politics?

How much fun can we have with this?

Right now i am just playing around with the idea… it has been rattling around in there since Jon Stewart announced his DC rally…

i am thinking mid afternoon on saturday..

    after lunch and before dinner

maybe a couple of hours long…

if this idea resonates with you i would be more than happy to spend my limited energy helping to make this happen.

    What do you think?

Stalk-like eyes? I know of only one spider genus that fits that description, and it’s so small you wouldn’t be able to detect that feature. I think what you probably saw were the pedipalps. Spiders have two modified, short legs in front in addition to the other eight. Mature males may have a bulbish apparatus on each pedipalp, which serves as a secondary sex organ. You may have witnessed a mating gone wrong, or just simple predation.

JoB: Welcome back. (As a matter of fact, we did miss you.)

I wish I could give you my full agreement as a homecomeing gift, but on this one, I’m afraid I have to go with SarahScoot, who obviously cares about this alot.

While I don’t think it’s wrong to tax something like alcohol in order to provide health care for people, I do think it puts the state in a difficult position, morally. It’s like: “OK, we’re going to sell you something that could be bad for you. But then we’re going to tax it to offset the cost to society.”

It’d be like buying OD insurance from your local heroin dealer.

    Kind of.

I feel the same way about the Lottery. While Lottery revenue is good for the citizens, problem gambling is bad for them. Therefore, while I agree with the state taxing gambling, I don’t agree with the state promoting gambling. I know several people whose lives have been ruined by problem gambling, so every time I see a billboard where my government is promoting the Lottery, it makes me kind of mad . . .

Fortunately, there’s an easy way out of the quandary as far as liquor is concerned. With private liquor sales, the state can still tax it, and the citizens can get their booze at times and places that are convenient for them.

    Frankly, I don’t see a problem here . . .

Oh, and one more thing. I’ve noticed that nobody’s talking about the money the state will save by having hundreds of fewer liquor store employees on the rolls and fewer buildings and business operations to look after. Shouldn’t those savings be factored into any equation of how much I-1100 will “cost” the state?

    Seems like.

Neighbor’s Excursion got hit last night just next to Alki auto repair heading East. From the leftover carnage you can see that a black GMC truck or other full size hit him. Not an expert on automobiles but judging from the plastic its probably no older than mid-ninetys at most. The truck’s grill will be mostly if not completely gone and I’d expect big damage to the front right quarter panel at least. Judging from the fact it hit a 5000 lb Excursion hard enough to smash into the car in front of it there might be a lot more damage as well. Keep your eyes open.

Holy frijole! This Forum moves quick.. 38 responses and a whole boatload of good suggestions…

I’m going to try and hit the highlights ;)

    — I took the suggestions to join some Meetup groups – hiking, non-religious groups (and wow, there are a lot.. Refreshingly differently from the crazies in Colorado Springs), “experience Seattle” and s few others. I don’t have any particular hobbies those aside except watching crap TV and playing video games. I would like to add water activities to my list since I have never been around so much – kayaking or something!

    — I will check out the Underdog Sports mentioned above, but despite my height (6’6″, hence BigPhil) I’m not terribly coordinated – I might get slaughtered out there :)

    — I’m not sure “Seattle Freeze” is apt, if this forum is any indication. And I’m surprised there are so many non-natives

    — Making friends at work is difficult (and what I’m used to) because I work for people in Colorado from here so no one in Bellevue works directly with me.

    — Very cool of you all to volunteer to hang out with me… Maybe I can arrange a west Seattle blog people meet up sometime soon as a good (albeit scary) first step .. And sorry I missed the social media group you mentioned.

    Thanks for all the tips!!

Yes I know what the CBO is (no need to get shitty about it, man). Yes, I understand what the graph is. No I don’t see how it’s related to 2010. There’s a ramp up in the involvement in Afghanistan, TARP, the implementation of Healthcare reform legislation, (which will actually help lower the deficit) and CHIP just to name a few differences.

The graph on the site has an estimated budget deficit as of 2009 to be just below 600 Billion dollars. In 2010 the actual budget deficit is roughly 1.3 TRILLION dollars. So, yes, I think there is a discrepancy in the numbers. I also see no useful info to help graph out the numbers comprising the percentage of the national deficit. This is why I am asking for updated and accurate info from those of you putting out these links/numbers.

I would like to believe the primary driver for our national deficit is tax cuts (or deferrals), I just see no such info online to support this. So I actually can not graph it myself. I will, however continue to ask for people to verify the claims they make online.

I like these points. I’m just concerned you’re making an argument from 2006 (the date of that chart in the link you provided). I’ve looked to find more recent info to back up these statements but haven’t found anything. Do you have a link to something more recent from a reliable source to quote?

Senator Murray has fought hard for this state. You may not like the “pork” she gets but that’s how the game has been played LONG before she got there and will continue long after she’s gone. Our state is the better for it.

I can’t entirely agree with this statement. While it’s true that Murray has fought hard for some good things in the state, I don’t agree with the justification that it’s ok to play the pork game simply because everyone else is doing it. That’s not leader-ship; that’s follower-ship. Ultimately, it leads to cronyism and corruption, and it increases the harmful influence of money on our political system.

I want leadership from my leaders. Is that really too much to ask? Specifically, I want Patty Murray to start taking a principled stand against earmarks and against the military-industrial complex. To do that, she’ll need to start voting against military appropriations bills that fund the war in Afghanistan. Next, she’ll need to stop funneling money to military projects. If she wants to be an advocate for Washington-based projects, that’s fine, as long as those projects are directed toward building a sustainable peace-based national economy.

Albert Einstein said that you cannot prepare for and prevent war at the same time. I’m still waiting for some of our elected leaders to get that idea. Starting with Patty Murray.

Have never heard of lists. But we’ll vouch for the door-to-door experience still happening, especially Admiral, where we’ve encountered BIG crowds the past couple years while venturing out to cover Skeleton Theatre. P.S. Admiral merchants have just set the date for their trick-or-treating too, 3-6 pm Friday 10/29, and I’m about to mention that on the main page along with the Junction date. Westwood Village usually has a trick-or-treat event too but we haven’t gotten a callback yet. And there are Halloween carnivals at the local city-run community centers – I’ve been adding those dates to the EVENTS page as I go through the catalog.
