Oh my…a place to finally vent on Fast Tans

I just moved here from the Eastside, and it it truely important to me to “BUY LOCAL”

I have switched my dentist, doctor, nails, etc..and my tanning to WSEA even though I work on the eastside and everything is close to my office, I am a big believer of local commerce.

This has to be the worst place to go to.

I bought a rather expensive package with add on’s for a whopping $325.

The staff seems too bothered to help you, the doors to the rooms have broken locks, two of the machines have broken fans set to the highest speed so your googles fly off in the wind tunnel.

I also have a spray on package, that I went to use the day before my wedding, made my appointment in advance planned my day around it and when I get there “oops we forgot to order the spray lotion…like were sorry…for sure”

I am counting the seesion until I am DONE, because it is too much $ to walk away from.

Ill be looking for a new place here in West Seattle if anyone has any recomondations:)

Does anyone know of any place I could get some photos taken? These aren’t actually passport photos, they are photos for a Canadian citizenship certificate, so they have specific requirements about size, etc. I guess what I’m getting at is that this might be a little more complicated than something they could do at Bartell’s or Rite-Aid, so I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. Thanks.

It’s election time: Let’s get ‘Crazy/Naked’

BURIEN – Politics! Power! Romance! Music (including one song you can actually dance to) — it’s all there in Breeders Theater’s new production, Crazy/Naked.

This will be BT’s 13th production at E.B. Foote Winery (127-B S.W. 153rd Street, Burien).

“Crazy/Naked is largely based on things I’ve seen people do and heard them say in more than 30 years of watching and writing about politics,” says playwright T.M. Sell.

“People don’t pay enough attention to politics, at all levels, and sometimes they make choices that at least invite questions,” says Sell, who teaches political science at Highline College.

Crazy/Naked follows BT’s successful summer 2007 show, Out of the Nest.

The cast includes Yana Kesala, Eric Hartley, Luke Amundson, Kelly Johnson, J Howard Boyd, Teresa Widner, and Martin J. Mackenzie. Doug Knoop directs, with music by Nancy Warren.

Show dates are Jan. 18, 19, 23, 25, 26, 30, 31, Feb. 1, 2 at 7 p.m.; Jan. 20 and 27 – 2 p.m., and Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. The Jan. 30 show is a benefit for the Highline College Foundation.

The show includes tasting of E.B. Foote’s award winning wines and hors d’oeurves, all for only $20.

Hi Bonnie,

Thanks for your input! It is ironic as our daughter was in kindergarten at Arbor Heights and we moved her to Roxhill. You are right about seeing the parents more at Arbor Heights, more parent involvement at that school that is for sure! But moving to Roxhill aside from this problem has been very positive for our daughter and family. I was told by the office staff at Roxhill that more of the parents work during the day than at Arbor Heights, I do remember a high number of stay-at-home-Moms at Arbor Heights.

I am hopeful that my suggest to the principal at Roxhill will not go unanswered, as she has so far been a very good listener.

When our daughter was in 1st grade earlier this year I talked with the only one other parent on a daily basis and most of those kids took the school bus. Now our daughter is in 2nd grade and the situation of the kids being on the bus is the same.

SA, a typical pool will put the faster swimmers in the middle lanes (i.e. 3 & 4), medium lanes in 2 & 5, and the easy lanes along the wall (1 &6). However, WS All Star doesn’t organize their lanes by speed making it a free-for-all. If a lane (or lanes) became available I would move over to it so I wouldn’t have to share anymore. I quit swimming there b/c the slower swimmers just loved sharing a lane with me since they knew I wouldn’t cross over onto their side of the lane. Well, I shouldn’t say slower since that’s insulting. They had poor technique and were all over the place. Anyway, it sounds like Mercer Island doesn’t organize their lanes either, which is unfortunate (Seattle city pools do…yea!).

I recommend swimming with people you feel are your own speed. That way if the pool gets crowded, at least you’ll be in a lane with someone you won’t be passing often, or who won’t be passing you. No RSVP’ing is a HUGE HUGE pet peeve of mine. It’s just plain rude.

My son went to Roxhill up until last year and I swear I met almost NO parents. I brought him to school every day and even went to all the parties they had and hardly met any of the parents. He goes to Arbor Heights now and I see parents all over the place.

Does the school ever have a parents night or anything like that? Maybe you could go and try to meet some of the other parents and try to get some phone numbers and contact information.

I like the Girl Scouts idea. That would be a great way for your daughter to meet some new friends her age.

Unless you planted it in a nice thick sealed pastic barrier at least 3 feet deep there is no way to contain it that I know of. You would have to comp;etely remove the bamboo and make sure you get all the rhizomes (roots) because any that are left in the ground will continue to travel and will even go through cement foundations.

I am interested in getting a part time job in the West Seattle area that would work well with the school hours as I do not have any before school or after school care and would much prefer to take our daughter to school myself and be home when she gets home or be able to pick her up from school. Does anyone know a business looking for part time help?

Hi WSMOM!!!

I try so hard to help our daughter have different experiences, she is an only child and there are no children in our neighborhood which makes it worse!!! We have always been open to having her friends over to the house, that is if she can find some friends and maybe someday have a sleepover at our house. Our daughter luckily is very outgoing and very friendly and does not seem to have a hard time making friends at school it is just after school everyone disappears and she has us and her cat as playmates. Rarely are other parents at the school so I can’t even get to know the other parents!

I have always had her in at least 1 activity twice a week to be around other kids.

I will give the Girl Scout idea a try and see what they say and if there is room for her to join.

I have since written the school principal and also asked her to give my suggestion to the schools PTA so we wil see if anything comes of this!

It’s true that Seattle Public Schools are not allowed to publish family contact information. At our school (and probably others) the PTA takes responsibility for publishing the family/school directory. Perhaps you can ask Roxhill’s PTA if they would be willing to make this happen. It involves sending home a form asking for contact info and permission to publish for the school community only and then compiling/copying the info and distributing it back out. A tedious task, but definitely worth it!! You will only get those that opt in, but that’s better than nothing at all. I find that people need a deadline, lots of reminders, and then an extended deadline. :)

Don’t get me started on the problem with lack of RSVPs. I don’t know if it’s the Seattle area or just diminishing manners in general, but it is really annoying!! People who do not respond to invitations must have never thrown a party or planned an event. It is really tough to plan, budget, prepare, etc. without knowing how many people are actually going to show up.

Thanks for all your suggestions!! We would love for any of her classmates to come over to play, but we can’t because they need parental permission and without a way to contact the parent it can’t happen! Again, most of the parents of children at Roxhill work and whenever I drop off or pick up our daughter I make a point of going in the school and on the playground and still I don’t see 1 parent, all the kids must take the school bus home.

When I asked the front desk for a class list all I got were the first and last names of the kids, no email or phone number as they don’t give out that information.

From what our daughter is telling me is that most of the kids take the school bus to and from school and there are alot of latch-key kids with no adult supervision at home when they get home.

Our daughter takes swimming and has taken karate and dance in the past.

As for field trips, per the teacher most parents are at work and I have already been with the kids on 2 field trips and there was only one other parent and she didn’t speak English well.

We aren’t sure if the kids in her class have transporation to events and might be embarassed to tell us they don’t have a car.

I cut my own mostly. You can buy at Cash and Carry,(now owned by smart and final) entire loins and other cuts. A ribeye is easy to carve and a whole sirloin is not. They sell angus and regular beef.

A really sharp knife and a freezer are all that is required to take advantage of the low per pound price.

This is a really hard situation. Have you talked with the school about their decision to not give out a directory? A directory is really needed for parents to connect so the children can connect. I’m sure you’re already doing some of these things, but here are some ideas off the top of my head…

Driving on fieldtrips, going to PTSA meetings and helping with class parties are ways to meet the parents. Your child’s classroom teacher might be able to help brainstorm some ways you can help your daughter connect with her classmates outside of the classroom. Have you invited any children from class over just to play after school? How about organizing the girls in your daughters class to all be on the same West Seattle Soccer Spring team together. Perhaps the teacher would send the forms home with the girls. There is also West Seattle Girls Softball League. Both of the organizations are terrific and will allow kids from the same school to request to play together. I hope this is helpful! Good luck!

To paraphrase my mom:

Nothing wrong with a bit of skepticism until someone loses an eye.

Election fraud is the correct term rather than voter fraud. Voter fraud is mostly a myth of the republicans who are intent on reducing turnout and disenfranchising voters of historically Democratic voting blocks. Note in this state the only recent cases of voter fraud uncovered in 2004 were all Republicans voting for Rossi.

Election fraud is much more difficult to detect and the safeguards run counter to the business model currently in use. The more speedy and efficient the process, the more vulnerable it is to single point failures and manipulation.

However you are in luck in King county. You can monitor the thing yourself. If you are a party member, you can even get paid to do so. Contact your district chair and tell them you wish to be an official observer for the next election. There are several people who are regulars in this function but often several slots open up.

Also any citizen with a pulse and a drivers license can sign in as an observer at most if not all of the venues where the ballots are received, stored, counted and tabulated.

I have done such duty myself. I also happen to know that while they probably will not comment on this thread, about 2/3rds of those who are long term employees of the King County elections offices, seem to live in West Seattle…. and are hardworking, honest people who would blow the whistle if anything obvious or underhanded was done within their sight or hearing.

The nature of the combination of Windows, Access database, and secrecy by the vendor Diebold of the underlying code and scripts, continue to fuel the suspicions of anyone who understands the nature of computers and the proven vulnerabilities of the various components used in the “black box” part of the tabulating software.

Open source code and transparency is the only viable fix as I see it but that is probably a long ways off here in the heart of Microsoft and the place where millions of people use computers without understanding either how they work or how they can be compromised without any indication to the user.

The shift to vote by mail will actually remove one of the potential failure points in the chain of custody of pre tabulated votes. The memory cards. The majority of the vulnerabilities discovered by computer scientist given access to various voting machines, could most easily be compromised via code introduced into memory cards.

Just wanted to remind people utilizing West Seattle pools for lap swim purposes to swim with people that are your speed. Just because the easy/medium/fast lanes might be more crowded doesn’t mean you should swim in the very fast lane if there are fewer people in it. If everyone swam with people their own speed, we would all get in a good workout. Remember, if you’re being passed frequently, it’s time to move into a slower lane. And if you keep passing people, move to a faster lane. Very simple and logical…just like those lap swim pool rules state (which everyone should read). Thanks!

I would like to know how does someone obtain donations from area business for our school? We area at Roxhill and we desperately need sound equipment, musical instruments, a piano would be great! Also bookcases for our teachers. I hear another area school received a donation of a baby grand piano for their school so how do we do something like that for our school?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
