Wonder why we have not heard more on the “JACK BLOCK PARK TRANSIT CENTER” ?

The Jack Block Park location, just a few blocks north of Spokane Street on Harbor Ave. A perfect choice for West Seattle’s Light Rail Transit Center. But Sound Transit is looking the other way, without respect for the best interest for West Seattle.

This is the only location in West Seattle where ample acreage is available for parking and a beautiful Community Transit Center for west Seattle Light Rail riders.
Space for 1500 car garage. Riders could park and ride to downtown locations. As in comparison to Spokane Street where only limited parking would be available.
Jack Block site would allow the Water Taxi to be moved from existing site to a new Pier at Jack Block Park. This would ease parking problems near Don Armeni boat launch, Seacrest Pier, and Salty’s. There is no parking available for beach walkers presently. Moving the Water Ferry away from the Seacrest Pier would also reduce wave disturbances to Paddle Boarders and Kayaks north of its present location.
Light Rail from Downtown would cross either under or over the Duwamish Waterway, stopping near Delridge/Chelan and then curve to the northwest to Jack Block Park.
From there two tunnels, one west to Admiral District, and one southwest to Avalon and West Seattle Junction.

Why haven’t we not heard more about this location?
Ask you City Council, or better yet ask the Port of Seattle which owns the parcels.

West Seattle, Don’t get fooled again with promises of expensive overhead tracks.
Who would like a monorail blocking your view.

Not just questionable in terms of business practices, but terrible customer service. But you raise another good point, which is why the difference in cost due to gender? I think this could, and should be challenged in court. A good friend of mine works in a high-end salon, and a man’s haircut can be quite complex. Many women have what could be considered a “man’s” haircut and vice versa. The charge should be based on complexity, not gender. I would speak to the attorney general’s office about the practices at this salon.

Deep Sea Sugar and Salt in Georgetown has the best chocolate cake I’ve ever had. I mean, I love Bakery Nouveau for croissants, but DSS&S has ’em beat with their chocolate cake by a significant margin. There’s a chocolate cake with a salted caramel drizzle that’s particularly fantastic. Great crumb, not too sweet (but sweet enough), delicious frosting. Okay. Now you’ve done it; I want a piece!

I was at a WS hair salon recently, where I’ve been a semi-regular patron for several years. The previous time I was there was about three months ago. When I checked out after my haircut, the manager informed me that at my previous visit, they had accidentally charged me for a men’s haircut rather than a women’s cut, and I still owed them $13. She had added it to my current bill and after some hesitation, I paid it, after expressing surprise and the wish that I’d been told this when I made the appointment. (She explained that she hadn’t looked up my account when I made the appointment.)

But the interaction left a bad taste. I felt that since it was their mistake, they should absorb the cost, or at least have called me immediately after the earlier haircut to let me know, rather than surprising me three months later with a high bill for a simple haircut.

I would have felt better if the manager had acknowledged that by rights they should simply absorb the (gender-based) cost difference, but asked if I might be willing to cover the difference anyway — and I might well have said yes from a spirit of generosity, but I didn’t like being required to pay it.

Am I off base? What would be your response?

It really is frustrating. I was at Westwood target a week ago. There is a sign “No animals except service dogs” or something to that effect. A customer walked right in with her dog past the security guy. No sign the animal was a service dog. I asked the security guard “the sign on your door says no pets allowed. That lady just walked by you with a pet but you didn’t say anything. Isn’t part of your job to enforce the rules?” He answered something like “Well we sort of enforce that rule but sort of don’t.”

Hey everybody, it’s been a few months.
I was asked to pop in and maybe share some info about housing, the job market, etc down here in Austin after I had gotten a bit more acclimated with the area. It’s… Different.

Culture/daily life: Reminds me very much of Seattle in the 90’s with a lot of tech booming w/ startups all over the place as well as internationally known companies dropping billions for more real estate and a very “young” vibe to this old city. There’s live music EVERYWHERE downtown. EVERY night. “Almost” every bar/club/venue. This city “feels” like it’s 1/10th the size of Seattle but geographically? It’s easily 4x larger. There’s a ton of sprawl but somehow each pocket and area has it’s own personality if you look into them a little more than just driving through. Fascinating city I’m still learning a lot about and really having a blast doing so.

The heat: It’s absurd. Today hit 96 (we’re cooling down I guess? lol) but down here AC is a fundamental right, not a great “feature” or upgrade. I was looking at new properties today and I could get the SEER rating, age of their AC/HVAC systems, insulation numbers, inspection records, and more on the spot at every location. Very helpful for prospective buyers. It’s odd that there are either wood-burning or gas fireplaces in every house I’ve toured. Folks down here think 55 is “extreme cold” apparently! They probably laugh at me the same way if I’m sweating and it’s only 85 out. lol Totally fair. ;)

Traffic: This one really cracks me up. I hear folks here complain about traffic non-stop. They think when it takes 1/2 an hour to go 15 miles it’s absurd. lol Similar to many other cities I spend time in down here, they have these side streets that run parallel to the main highways and in stop-go traffic, you can breeze by at 35mph. The less people realize that the better IMO, means faster drive times for me. lol

Transit: They “have” public transit but it’s a shadow of Seattle’s. They have a Light-rail-esque train that runs from The Domain (North Austin) downtown but it’s slow and often has merging sets of tracks so the train will have to pull over for 5+ minutes while you wait for the oncoming train to pass. Pretty silly not to just lay down more rail but I’m no authority on the matter.

Food: This city if BBQ heaven! Amazing Mexican, Honduran, Vietnamese, Thai, “American” cuisine and so much more. Definitely a foodie city but I look down in disgust at the “salmon” grocery store carry here. It’s that Atlantic cat-food. The nearby Costco did get a run of the Copper River Reds and I was blown away at how cheap it was compared to Seattle! People don’t know their PNW seafood and I hope to help correct that amongst our growing group of local friends. lol

Child resources: I don’t know if this point is so much of a positive comment about Austin, a negative one about Seattle, or something in-between but it is a night and day difference. Currently we live walking distance from a fantastic full-time, open 7am-7pm, M-F children’s daycare/preschool/pre-K center that we and our daughter absolutely love for roughly $200/week. Our wait list time? 2 weeks to get in. # of schools available & options? Again, night & day difference. Property taxes have a %1 addition solely for funding schools and with each new “planned community” or “mixed use neighborhood” that pops up there seems to always be at the very least, an elementary and jr high built at the same time to serve the area. The school districts “seem” to be pretty well funded and provide solid educational support. Many parents I’ve met have mentioned they moved to Austin because of the schools. My daughter is still in daycare/pre-K so I have no idea how accurate that might be but so far, it “seems” to be fairly legit. Also, babysitters! There are a PLETHORA of them for actually reasonable rates! Our favorite is certified in infant and child CPR, basic medical, is going to medical school, and volunteers at education centers. $12.50/hour!!! Our backups have similar certs and ambitions and range between $11-15/hour. In Seattle we could never find an easily accessible, affordable babysitter that we could hire other than for very special occasions. Down here we go out at least once a month now, often twice and “occasionally” three times. lol This is definitely a far more “kiddo friendly” city for both parents and kids. At least, that is how is feels/seems.

Any questions about other differences? There’s good and bad differences and I absolutely miss Seattle. I can’t wait to come back and visit again (hopefully sooner than later). I certainly have yet to find anything down here that can compare to Sunday brunch at Salty’s, Ma’Ono’s fried chicken sandwich, Easy Street, Husky Deli, or any number of beloved Seattle institutions but like I said up front. It’s… Different. In some ways good, in others bad, but most often just “meh?”. Coin flip, could go either way.

We are looking for an after-school nanny for our kiddos, 10 years and 7 years. This could be a great fit for a college student, someone who works part-time or isn’t currently working and looking for a light schedule. We live in the North Admiral area and would love someone local to West Seattle.
    • We need 16 hours a week; days and hours are M/T/Th/F: 2:15-5:15 p.m. and Wed. 1-5 p.m. (with some extended hours at times as needed and agreed on ahead of time).
    • Looking for someone who can pick them up from school (.5 miles from our house), drive/walk them home, engage in play time, assist with homework, help with play dates and getting kids ready for sports/activities.
    • Nanny needs to be dependable and reliable with schedule, responsible, social, creative and have their own transportation.
    • Aiming for an early October start date, hourly rate/DOE
    • Asking for a commitment through June 2020.

If you are interested or have any connections, leads, friends/family/neighbor that may be interested, please pass on this on and/or email jjlcasillas@gmail.com Looking forward to hearing from you!

Actually it’s a fine topic for Open Discussion. There’s a lot of confusion about building codes etc. I looked at this one. The site may have held one large house but it is multiple lots. There’s no “rezoning” proposed but the lots are being used as separate lots for the first time. Lots of property on the books like that, and yes, Blueprint has been a longtime specialist in those properties. As for AirBNB – a view house that sold across from ours has been used as one for some months now. It definitely does nothing for the housing crisis but West Seattle is short on lodging- as a tourist 30 years ago, I was shocked to find there was (still is) only one motel/hotel in this beautiful part of the city – so it does alleviate that a bit. – TR

This has to be one of the most NIMBY posts I have seen in a while. People on here complain when the City doesn’t allow them (property owners) to do what they want with their property or, in this case, when property owners do what building codes LEGALLY allow them to do.

It also belongs in Rants and Raves, don’t foul the Open Discussion section with this.

Hi! I just happened upon this – starting to explore a potential nanny share situation for January. Curious to see if you are still looking for another family and if the timing would be something that could work. I have two boys. In January one will be 2 yrs 8 mo and the other 6 months. Would consider just the baby. Thanks!
