Your school is lucky to have you! The book cases should be easy and free! The district has a surplus website that the school staff has access to. They can either shop off the website for book cases, or call surplus directly (you must be a district employee to do both). Shopping off the website may take a long time, our PTA ordered book shelves in October and they weren’t delivered until April. I’m told calling directly with your pleas for supplies gets faster action. Good Luck, there should be tons of surplus with all the schools that have been closed.

I have already sent my suggestions to the principal and will see what she says first regarding the school policy and personal information, dependening on what she says I will then ask the teacher and I have already offered my assistance to help gather this information, I will even type it up!! :)

I see what you means about now being able to laugh at your past concerns with middle and high school, however it is a different ballgame nowadays, especially with a merger of Denny and Sealth. Since our daughter moved up a grade and will be in middle school when she is 11 it does nothing to know she could be in a school with 11th and 12th graders, sorry!

The cultural differences I think is part of the reason for no directories at Roxhill, alot of the kids in our daughters class are Spanish.

I don’t believe that our daughter would be endangered at Denny or Sealth perse but agin all the influences with being at the same school of much older kids is scary, the drugs, smoking, sex, everything!! I am not trying to shelter her but sgain would like her to remain a kid as long as possible. I know that high school is a whole different ballgame but with only being 11 at middle school does not ease my concerns.

It has been along time for me too being in high school I am coming up on my 30th reunion and the schools and kids are so different then way back then!!

Solstice – If Roxhill does not have an instrumental music program, our school’s music teacher also works at several different schools and I’m sure could really use your donation. Let me know if it doesn’t work out for Roxhill!

Lattemom – if you can think of specific businesses that might be able to supply what you need, calling or stopping by (the personal touch) and asking usually works the best. Many businesses are being approached now (it’s school auction season), but I have found that a direct ask is usually the most fruitful! Good luck and lucky Roxhill to have a dedicated parent like you.

Two comments:

When my kids were at Lafayette a few years ago, they allowed a parent to create a class roster by sending a form home with the kids, asking for the information. But that works best if the teacher is supportive and will help remind the kids to return it. And cultural differences seemed to make some families suspicious of the intent. At least you might get some of their contact info.

Also, now that my children are high school/college age, I look at your concerns about middle school from a different perspective. I remember being terrified of those big kids as my eldest moved into middle and then high school. Now it seems funny to me as I’ve come to realize that they’re still just kids and fun to be around. I’ve had children at Denny, Madison, Sealth, and Garfield, and never had any significant problems between my kids and the other students. They laugh when I ask them if they feel endangered. They have enough “street smarts” to avoid threatening situations, just as I knew not to enter a certain restroom when I was in high school (a long, long time ago).

Hey everyone,

I am EMT in the local Seattle/King County area so I thought I might be able to help you all out since I spend a lot of time at the local hospitals.

Highline- 16251 Sylvester Rd S- This is the main campus and the ER entrance is located just south of SW 160th St on 8th Ave SW. This is their main ER, the ER at 128th and Military Rd (Riverton Campus) is more of an urgent care. If you go to the Riverton Campus and your symptoms are more severe than they can handle,you are in active labor, or they need to admit you. They will trasfer you to the main campus by ambulance, which is aprox an $800 ride.

Harborview Medical Center- 325 9th Ave- Harborview is the only Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and regional burn center serving Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. They are ALWAYS busy and always packed. Harborview’s Centers of Emphasis for neurosciences, trauma, burns, reconstruction and rehabilitation, mentally ill and medically vulnerable, and AIDS/STD treatment provide leading edge teaching,research, and clinical care for all patients. They are also the only county hospital. Harborview gets the majority of the Airlifts from outside of seattle due to their level 1 rating. One of two major teaching hospitals for UW Medicine

Swedish First Hill-747 Broadway- The ER here is located on the West side of the building. They are fairly busy on a regular basis. They don’t really handle major Trauma.

Virgina Mason Medical Center- 1100 9th ave- The ERis located on the south side of the building. This ER is on the smaller side, but they are building a new one in the next few years.

UW Medical center-1959 NE Pacific -Among the top dozen medical centers in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report 2007 “America’s Best Hospitals.One of two major teaching hospitals for UW Medicine. This is quite a ways from West Seattle espically during rush hour.

Childrens Hospital-4800 Sand Point Way NE- Pretty much self explanitory. Most kids with trauma type injurys will go to Harborview if transported by ambulance or medics.

Valley Medical-400 South 43rd Street- South King county trauma center. Valley is a level III trauma center. They handle anything. This is a ways from West Seattle as well.

All the other hospitals in King County are a fair distance from West Seattle. The exception of is West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital @ 2600 SW Holden St. West Seattle Psych has the capacity to serve individuals who voluntarily seek psychiatric inpatient services. Case management, counseling, crisis stabilization services, group services, vocational services, domestic violence treatment, expanding community services program and child/adolescent psychiatry are other main services provided by the hospital.

I found info on one therapist in West Seattle you may want to try…I haven’t seen Stephanie Ross myself, however she lists pregnancy massage as one of her specialties.

I am a semi-regular client at M3 Bodyworks for a few years now. I’ve seen a total of 4 massage therapists during that time and have been very satisfied with the results.

See! That is my problem too!! The thought of 11-12 yr olds going to school with 11th and 12th graders just isn’t good! Explorer West is a great school and our daughters 1st grade class had the opportunity to go there last year for a carnival put on my the Explorer West students, it cost roughly $12,000 to go there. I have heard that denny has some good teachers but still with the high school across the street and now this plan to combine the schools, no way is she going there! I guess private or an alternative middle school would be the only solution.

Our daughter is 7 years old too and since joining 2nd grade she will be in middle school 1 year earlier than thought and it is only 4 years away!

I worry about middle/high school too. My kids are 7 and 3. I have another friend who is an excellent teacher at Denny. She teaches language arts and history. But I don’t want it to be combined with a high school. I wouldn’t want my 6th grader to go to school with 12th graders!

Erik, that’s funny. I always think of that old Almost Live! skit with all the white men taking off their shirts and blinding everyone. They used a mirror to exxagerate the relection in peoples eyes. Hilarious! Tanning too much is bad though to. I was in Sarasota, Florida last year and the amount of elderly people with very brown, wrinkly skin was unbelievable. It was really disturbing and tanning taken too far. It really does harm the skin.

That is funny we made opposite changes!! Arbor Heights was a good school it just wasn’t the right fit for our daughter and our family, we have felt at home right away at Roxhill and yes it does not have the money and parent involvement as does Arbor Heights but for us it had acouple programs that were not offered at Arbor Heights.

It also does not hurt that they have a rainy day program and the kids aren’t all in a playcourt together as it was at Arbor Heights, I no longer have to worry about our daughter being wet and cold.

Our daughter started at Roxhill in 1st grade and was quickly moved up to 2nd grade at Roxhill, a move she needed as she was bored and not challenged.

She does want to play soccer and we haven’t tried dance in awhile and she is currently enrolled in swimming.

I know we have awhile to worry about this but I am worried when it comes to middle school selection, I am not thrilled about Denny and now with it mergering with Sealth really makes it a no brainer for her not to attend that school.

As for the teachers at Roxhill they are great and I have a good idea which 4/5 grade teacher you are talking about!

That gave me a flashback to last June on the beach in Jamaica. A middle aged bloke on his first day of holiday plops down on a chaise lounge not far from me and lathers up his whole body with SPF 1000 sunscreen to protect his very white english skin. Fortunately I left the next morning so I didn’t have to see if it worked.

Oh my…a place to finally vent on Fast Tans

I just moved here from the Eastside, and it it truely important to me to “BUY LOCAL”

I have switched my dentist, doctor, nails, etc..and my tanning to WSEA even though I work on the eastside and everything is close to my office, I am a big believer of local commerce.

This has to be the worst place to go to.

I bought a rather expensive package with add on’s for a whopping $325.

The staff seems too bothered to help you, the doors to the rooms have broken locks, two of the machines have broken fans set to the highest speed so your googles fly off in the wind tunnel.

I also have a spray on package, that I went to use the day before my wedding, made my appointment in advance planned my day around it and when I get there “oops we forgot to order the spray lotion…like were sorry…for sure”

I am counting the seesion until I am DONE, because it is too much $ to walk away from.

Ill be looking for a new place here in West Seattle if anyone has any recomondations:)

So funny that you made the opposite move as us. I didn’t move my son out of the school because I wasn’t happy with the school, I moved him because Arbor Heights had a certain program that Roxhill didn’t. I must tell you that Roxhill has some excellent teachers, especially one of the 4/5 teachers who is a very good friend of mine.

I wish there was a perfect school…as there is none.

Have you thought of having your daughter do dance or soccer or another activity? I’m sure there are many other places to meet other girls.

These aren’t actually passport photos, they are photos for a Canadian citizenship certificate, so they have specific requirements about size, etc. I guess what I’m getting at is that this might be a little more complicated than something they could do at Bartell’s or Rite-Aid, so I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. It’s election time: Let’s get ‘Crazy/Naked’

BURIEN – Politics! Power! Romance! Music (including one song you can actually dance to) — it’s all there in Breeders Theater’s new production, Crazy/Naked.

This will be BT’s 13th production at E.B. Foote Winery (127-B S.W. 153rd Street, Burien).

“Crazy/Naked is largely based on things I’ve seen people do and heard them say in more than 30 years of watching and writing about politics,” says playwright T.M. Sell.

“People don’t pay enough attention to politics, at all levels, and sometimes they make choices that at least invite questions,” says Sell, who teaches political science at Highline College.

Crazy/Naked follows BT’s successful summer 2007 show, Out of the Nest.

The cast includes Yana Kesala, Eric Hartley, Luke Amundson, Kelly Johnson, J Howard Boyd, Teresa Widner, and Martin J. Mackenzie. Doug Knoop directs, with music by Nancy Warren.

Show dates are Jan. 18, 19, 23, 25, 26, 30, 31, Feb. 1, 2 at 7 p.m.; Jan. 20 and 27 – 2 p.m., and Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. The Jan. 30 show is a benefit for the Highline College Foundation.

The show includes tasting of E.B. Foote’s award winning wines and hors d’oeurves, all for only $20.

Hi there Lattemom: Since I’ve been pondering your predictament today, I thought I’d throw my last two cents worth in…

I have a child in 2nd grade at Hope Lutheran School and I couldn’t be happier with the school, the 2nd grade teacher and the really nice parents in this class. There are only 17 kids (mostly girls) and quite of few are “only’s” so I hear of lots of afterschool playdates. My other children have gone to a variety of other West Seattle schools over the years and I have to say this one has fit the best. Naturally, everyone has their own ideas about the “perfect” school (there is none!) so, again, good luck and just keep trying!
