bad drivers, bad hygiene, rude, unsubtle, selfish, ignorant of their surroundings, generally aggressive, bad tippers, don’t know their limitations, intrusive, herd mentality…

but other than that, they’re okay, i guess.

    2 much whine

my hangover was in my soul

as teenagers that mountain was our playground

the summit was almost accessible in tennis shoes

and the lava tubes blissful on a hot summer’s day

it broke my heart the first time i drove up that mountain in the aftermath of the eruption

    it’s beautiful now

it’s a good reminder that disasters are transitory

Thanks, luckymom, for the kind words, and thanks Betty and JoB, for your suggestions.

    Of course, almost immediately after I logged off last night and went to bed, I remembered a few more things;

With the beautiful hot sunny weather we’ve been having lately, sunscreen!! ;-)

Also, historically, ongoing needs have included:

Tents; 8X8, 10X10, and family sized. (I don’t know if any of those parameters have changed.)

Also, building materials, for the sleeping structures that are being built, to eventually replace all of the tents.

And, firewood is always needed, but must not be treated, or painted wood.

Pallets are an ongoing need as well. Ones that are in good shape, to raise the tents off the ground, and lessen the chance of them becoming flooded, and even broken ones, for firewood, as long as they are not treated, painted, or have had chemicals spilled on them.

If you are interested in donating some building materials, and making a couple of trips over a few days or so would be no problem, maybe run down there with a donation of hygiene supplies, clothes, or whatever, and then ask to talk to a Structure Master if one is available, and he or she could give you specifics on the building materials needed.

    Thanks again!

I haven’t seen a Needs List for a while, can’t find my recent one but some things are ongoing.

TOILET PAPER! paper plates, bowls, cups,Plastic flatware

    Moist wipes

    Bleach & cleaning supplies

    Twine & duct tape

    Hygiene items;

    Deoderant,shampoos,soaps,razors, toothpaste & brushes.

    Milk, powdered milk & juices

    Cold cereals

    Easy-fix package foods

    Canned soups, stews,pastas.

We have new kids so need to check regarding sizes & needs

Yes, still some warm clothing as they tell me it gets pretty chilly at night. Always socks, men and women.

    LUCKYMOM Does this help?

If possible, you can visit the camp. Visitors are always welcome They’ll even give you a tour and explain how its run, etc.

luckymom, thanks for thinking of Nickelsville.

Since I’m no longer in Camp myself, having gotten into transitional housing, I’m not sure of any current specific needs, beyond the usual:

Batteries: mostly AA & AAA, but C & D as well.

There is probably still a need for some warm clothing; will probably always be a need for socks, and now maybe some lighter summer type clothing.

    Hygiene supplies

    Hand sanitizer and/or wipes.

Non-perishable foods; canned veggies, meats, etc

That’s a few off the the top of my head, perhaps JoB, or another regular donor can elaborate, and give more specifics, esp re: clothing, and with that esp for kids.

    Reusable Grocery Bags Breed Bacteria

    Tests Confirm Risk Of Illness

Marchetta took the lab results to Dr. Michelle Barron, the infectious disease expert at the University of Colorado Hospital.

“Wow. Wow. That is pretty impressive,” said Barron.

Barron examines lab results for a living.

“Oh my goodness! This is definitely the highest count,” Barron commented while looking at the bacteria count numbers.

She admitted she was shocked at what was found at the bottom of the bags.

Food Safety Report: Half of Reusable Grocery Bags are Contaminated with E. Coli and Other Bacteria, Posing

    a Health Risk

University Study Finds 97 Percent Never Wash Their Reusable Shopping Bags

Tucson, AZ (PRWEB) June 24, 2010 — Reusable grocery bags can serve as a breeding ground for dangerous food-borne bacteria and pose a serious risk to public health, according to a joint food safe according to a joint food safety research report issued today by researchers at the University of Arizona (Tucson) and Loma Linda University (Loma Linda, California)

While JoB may be the only person who regularly wastes eneergy and pollutes with chlorine… most people don’t.. 97% don’t. And when they heft those bags up to be filled they are spreading the disease… they have in effect created and entirely new infectious disease vector. Thanks.

Probably not next year, but likely the year after. Could be earlier if the Levy passes, who knows. The building is used as an interim site for various school programs (ie. it was used for Sealth prior to K-5) while other buildings are refurbished to become permanent locations. If you have read about the Levy, you will see that SPS plans to use the Boren building for several other schools in the next few years as their permanent buildings are built or refurbished.

They are currently remodeling the inside, and will start on the inside towards the end of the month or June (per DT meeting last night). The parents & DT just weeded the planters last weekend, and SPS will beautify the grounds. There will be 2 sets of playground equipment moved in, though one set will be for the preschool kids on site. The entire building will not be used for K-5, since the program is not yet big enough. We will have use of the science labs for both science and engineering projects, though. This is all I know about the building thus far…

Heat and lots of roots are key to a productive tomato. Here are two ways to plant your tomatoes which will increase both heat and roots:

    1) In the ground/a garden: Dig a long shallow trough and plant them horizontally, slowly angle upwards to ensure about 35% – 40% of the plant is above the ground level. Within a couple days the plant will be growing towards the sun. The portion of the stem that is under ground will grow more roots and with the root being so close to the surface, they will be much warmer.

    2) In a pot: Plant them in a dark colored pot, (absorbs more heat), ensuring about 35% – 40% of the plant is above the soil level. The stem that is under the soil line will grow roots and the pot will keep the roots very warm. Place the pot in a tray and water from the bottom on a regular basis…tomato plants are water hogs.

    Feed Your Tomatoes

    1) Mix equal parts of seaweed/kelp and fish emulsion. Feed this to your tomato plants once a month. You can get both of these products at West Seattle Nursery.

    2) When planting you tomatoes, put some crushed eggshells under the roots. The eggshells provide calcium.

Late Blight. Prevention is critical. Here a couple of good articles.

For those that are unfamiliar with where a healthy persons blood oxygen saturation should be; when Jiggers’ sats hit 75, that’s pretty damn low.

Normal sats should be at least 92, preferably 95, or above, ideally 98-99.

My lung infections are getting better. The main problem is my oxygen levels. Ever since had stomach surgery almost two years ago, I’ve noticed that I have worsened in my breathing patterns. Over winter time it progressed and eventually I wound up in the hospital with blood clots in my lungs along with other goodies currently. I have always had problems, but this is new stuff for me. As soon as I start walking up and down the hospital hallway, it drops to 75. This is how I feel when I m outside on the streets. I thought it was my stomach and hernia giving me breathing problems which very well could be added with the blood clotting. The doctors job is to make sure the infections are gone in my lungs and then I can be dischrged since the threat has been taken care of. No answers for my low oxygen levels. It’s going to suck and I’m going to continue sucking wind..Wooot! Anyways, it’s no one elese problem but mines.Any Doctors here?

Tomorrow tells the tale. Big labor has dumped over 10 million in the Scott Walker recall… civil servants… and most of it out of state union money. So how do you fight a rabid dog? A bigger, meaner dog. Gov. Walker didn’t gut civil service.. he put modest restrictions on unlimited bargaining rights and allowed school districts and local governments to go to the open market to find benefits packages… saving healthcare for 214,000 children, and allowing many school districts to avoid layoffs. This is a mini preview of the national election….. If he wins… in the state that first authorized collective bargaining of civil servants… we may actually give some governors and state legislations the courage to look out for the interests of the taxpayer. Imagine ,… state workers have to contribute less than 13 per cent of their healthcare costs, cannot get wage increases that exceed the consumer price index unless approved by voter referendum and have to contribute 5% to their pensions. so onerous… and a balanced budget. Gregoire? See how it;s done without cutting the safety net? Poor taxpayer is usually picking up 50 per cent of their 401K, national average, 30 per cent of their healthcare and no retirement at 54 years old …. jeez they may have to live like the masses… paying some of the freight and pulling on the oars. PAC’s came in and matched, then beat big labor money. Made it a fair contest when it became obvious labor money was swamping Gov Scott.

HMCRich.. the Republicans … who have plenty of say in the government … are far more concerned about curtailing women’s reproductive rights than they are about passing a budget.

    smitty…

how many times does a strategy have to be proven wrong before you give up on it?

Lower tax rates didn’t increase revenues under Ronnie Raygun… a rising economy did.

do you see a rising economy in our near future?

because if you do i would love to be looking through your crystal ball

without it.. lower taxes equals lower revenue equals higher deficit.

    Huidekmi,

The most important thing about your story is that you knew where to look and found out what was actually going on (albeit with a little delay), and stopped writing checks.

One item to note – you should definitely consult with a construction attorney about your situation. I doubt from your post that you have any realistic chance of recovery, but you need to make sure you follow your contract’s termination clause and with a pending creditor battle, if someone else ended up worse off than you did, you may well find someone coming after you to put even more money into the ponzi scheme…it all depends on the circumstances. You’ll at least want to have a consultation to make sure that you navigate this maze appropriately so it doesn’t cost you even more.

And one thing that will hopefully make you feel better…tax debt is non-dischargeable in a bankruptcy, so he’ll end up paying at least the government back some day.

JimmyG – I appreciate your input, but also feel that there is a place for someone to act in this role, which is why I’m doing it. If the WSB staff vetted all these posts, then I wouldn’t need to, but I don’t see that being realistic given the resources they have. Nor do I think that is a reasonable expectation for them to do.

One last point – I know full well that the forum contents are the WSB’s private property that they can do whatever they want with, and totally respect that. I simply think TR should change her stance, as it’s really not clearly explained in the rules, and doesn’t make good sense. I understand that she wants to keep her sponsors/advertisers happy, but honestly, counter-posting to remove their illegal competition should do that. The guys who pay the big bucks to sponsor this site don’t mess with these guys that won’t follow state licensing requirements.

    Tues.

    March 6th

A flurry of activity revolving around my neighbors’ pending departure. I did some of my securities yesterday, but have another one left.

I had to stay overtime for my security. We had new intakes, and a new security who was put on the desk without training. Later, OSL was due, but no kitchen people were available, so I helped serve lunch. I’m really glad [my neighbors and I] already said our goodbyes, because I’m being severely side-tracked today. I’ve errands to run as well. —Eternity on the bus.

______ has, in his words, his needs met, if not his wants. He’s got a 1.5[mega]-pixel camera; his bike + trailer are looking sharp. His companion, ______, is babying his bicycle, which he put together. Both are talented, handy people, and it shows, in their preparation for departure.

______’s comment that his needs are met, if not his wants, is actually a reference to his life and faith, I think — but it applies here, as well. Ditto his companion, whose mission is to travel around, “spreading the word.” I wish them well.

I’ve made a mental note to pick up a hammer to fix my tent support. It looks like it’s pulled apart. So far, I’ve forgotten this twice. Hopefully, I’ll remember it tomorrow.

There’s a meeting tomorrow I want to attend. It’s supposed to be a report card on how well the [plan?] to end homelessness is working. I will bet the grades are low.

If ever we go to Orca Cards [REDACTED words] we will not be able to access the hygiene centers, the worksource centers, the food banks, or any other supposedly available resource meant to help us. If it’s possible to screw us further, this qualifies. We won’t be able to help ourselves up and out of homelessness. We almost can’t now.

    Almost.

    —H.

We are big fans of the indoor playground at Seattle Gymnastics Academy in Columbia City. http://www.seattlegymnastics.com/columbiacity/

We are also big fans of The Jungle Gym in Burien which has multiple open gym times for kids to get out their energy.

    http://www.junglegymfun.com/

The West Seattle YMCA and Matt Griffin YMCA both have childcare and open swim times so check their websites if you can join. The childcare is worth the membership and the kids have lots of fun.

There is also a great FREE Play and Learn group at the Fauntleroy YMCA that is for kids under 5 with fun activities. I believe it is on Wednesdays from 12:30-2. I would call to confirm, but it is fun and you don’t have to be a YMCA member to participate.

It’s good to hear that Harborview has a good ER compared to were I go.I have been going to Virginia Mason for over 15 years. All of my Doctors are at V.M. I have never been to any other hospital except UW to get surgery back in 1997 for my knee. My latest experience with ER at V.M. was the worst I have ever received.I have a permanent disability and get infusions done at V.M’s Oncology every two weeks. My treatment isn’t a cure. I have never produce natural anti-bodies my whole life and can get sick on a dime. Recently, my normal cough was getting worse and I thought I was coming down with pneumonia again. That’s pretty common for me. Anyways, the difference with this symptom was that I had was experiencing trouble breathing. Last Saturday, I was pretty wiped out because I labored all night with cough and breathing issues. I decided to get myself looked at at V.M. reaching ER with shallow breathing It took about 30 minutes before they took my vitals. My oxygen level read 93 which is not to bad. I am well rested by now and they took me in examined me, and I was discharged with anti-biotic pills after xrays revealed I have Plueral Effusion. Overnight, I got worse as the next day Sunday, I went back to ER with the same issue. They knew I had low oxygen levels examined me again and sent me out with cough sryup since I was coughing worse. Next day, Monday, I had a real bad time breathing and was at C and P for awhile feeling nautious and ready to pass out. I forced myself to get on the bus and made it to ER once again. This time they gave me a vicodin pill. Tuseday came around and I barely reached the bustop gasping for air and blacked out for a split-second. I made it into downtown and up to the hospital and went straight to my Doctor on the 8th floor.I was ready to pass out as his nurse checked my vitals and couldn’t believe how low my oxygen was. He was busy with other patients and he said send him to ER. I laughed and told her that’s were I have been trying to get seen at. My Dr’s last patient of the day was a no-show. He took me in and gave me a walk round the floor test while monitoring me. He told me enough and lets get back to the room. He said to me you aren’t going anywhere. It’s up to me to be admitted. I said I was trying to do that for the last three days. He bypassed ER and went straight to a room. I have been here ever since Tuesday dignosed with several things from blood clots in my lungs to pneumonia. I am still trying to recover as I type and don’t know how long I will be here. Now there’s a real nightmare ER story for you. It is not the first time that I have been to V.M’s ER. They know me and my history. I have a horrible disease that is killing me. Don’t know when I’ll recover.

The community centers have open gym days. They put toys for kids (under say 5) in the gym and the kids can go to town! Plasma cars, see-saws, basketballs….you name it. We used this a lot when our daughter was younger, especially in bad weather. I think the price is still $2/session.

I quit cold turkey in the late 80’s after smoking 1 1/2 to 2 packs a day for many years. It was hard but worth it. Yes, I got cranky [ok,maybe more than just cranky] but that does pass! Stay strong, all the bad side effects of kicking the habit do go away.

What helped me was seeing people just a few years older than I was already in wheel chairs tied to oxygen tanks due to smoking.I did not want to end up like that if I could help it.

Now even the hef has come out

    http://blog.seattlepi.com/seattlepolitics/2012/04/23/hefner-right-is-pounding-on-as-bedroom-door/

Joel Connelly on April 23, 2012 at 11:21 am Joel Hefner: Right is “pounding on A’s bedroom door”

The political right has opened an a second front to its “War on Women” in the opinion of Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner. Hefner believes “repressed conservatives” have launched a “War on Sex.”

The founder has taken to pages of his magazine with a full-page editorial accusing right-thinking politicians of “pounding on America’s bedroom door.”

    Hefner is obviously aroused.

“For months I have watched the rhetoric building,” he writes. “Last October, in an interview with an evangelical blogger, Rick Santorum promised to defund birth control on the grounds that contraception is ‘license to do things in a sexual real that is counter to how things are supposed to be.’

“Ron Paul was no better, believing that the birth control pill did not cause immorality but that immorality creates the problem of wanting to use the pill. Mitt Romney vowed to see a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Roe v. Wade was the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion across the country.

Hefner has long espoused a “Playboy philosophy” of sexual liberty and put his money behind court suits challenging the state’s presence in the nation’s bedrooms.

“All these years later I hear echoes of this same ignorance espoused by a new crop of self-appointed arbiters who are determined to oversee our morality,” he writes. “I heard it when Santorum backer Foster Friess said, ‘Back in my days, (women) used Bayer aspirin for contraceptives,’ implying that if women held an aspirin between their legs, they wouldn’t open them

“I heard it when I learned about proposed anti-abortion legislation in Kansas that would protect doctors who conceal vital medical information from pregnant women.”

“And I heard it when Rush Limbaugh called a Georgetown University law student a ‘slut’ and a ‘prostitute’ after she testified on Capitol Hill about allowing employers to avoid providing contraception for religious reasons . . . 50 years of sexual freedom vanished in a sound bite.”

Hefner argues that what’s at stake is nothing less than repealing a right of privacy recognized in the Supreme Court’s 1960′s Griswold v. Connecticut ruling, which overturned a ban on contraception in the Nutmeg State.

“If these zealots have their way, our hard-won sexual liberation — women’s rights, reproductive rights and rights to privacy — lie in peril,” he writes. “We won’t let that happen . . . Welcome to the new sexual revolution.”
