Informational interviews are fantastic opportunities. Years ago when I was thinking of getting into IT, I did some informational interviews as part of a class I was taking. Those interviews led me to info on a training program that I otherwise would not have known about. It was transformational for me.

Please take datamuse’s advice – you can’t go wrong there.

Does the college have any resources that might help, like a career office or something like that?

You might have tried this already, but maybe ask the vets at some of the area clinics if any of them would do an informational interview? You could learn more about the field and they might be able to answer some of your questions about mentorships or internships.

I’m currently a Running Start Student full-time at South Seattle Community College. I’ve always been interested in Veterinary Medicine, and have wanted to be a Vet since I knew what one was. As I’m approaching my Senior year, and High School Graduation (with my AA), I’ve been trying very hard to get experience, or at least learn more about veterinary medicine.

As some of you might know, it is so hard to find a place where a minor (17 years old) could gain experience in places such as animal hospital. Places I have reached out to in the past have been no help with my curiosity, and never call me back for kennel cleaning job postings (probably because of my age, or lack of experience). I’d love anything from a simple interview with a vet, to a potential mentorship, shadowing, assisting, even a kennel cleaning job.

I’m rather new to West Seattle, and want to go about this in the right way, and don’t know many people who could help me with this sort of thing.

If anyone has any information on how to go about getting this experience, I would be immensely thankful! I feel like it shouldn’t be this difficult to get a shadowing gig, or a cleaning job..I may be doing something wrong– if anybody knows any information or has any connections I would be very grateful for your help.

Thank you!

We have as many as 10 large landscaping boulders in our garden that we would like to give away. You move them, they are yours. They are anywhere from 2 man rocks to 4 man rocks. We can provide easy access to the garden through a carport.

Earth Greens Up

While rising carbon dioxide concentrations in the air can be beneficial for plants, it is also the chief culprit of climate change. The gas, which traps heat in Earth’s atmosphere, has been increasing since the industrial age due to the burning of oil, gas, coal and wood for energy and is continuing to reach concentrations not seen in at least 500,000 years.

How convenient for the IPCC WG1AR5 to NOT consider water vapor as a forcing, thus leading NASA to make such silly statements as above.

AR5 Chapter 8

8.3.3.3 Stratospheric Water Vapour Page 23 of 82, Page 681 overall

Maybe by cutting down huge swaths of forests, plowing the land, or covering it with pavement and cities we have fundamentally altered the much, much larger natural carbon cycle.

In the past 150 years humans have gone from using 4% of the lands surface to using 40% of the land surface, so to assume this has minimal effect is naïve.

Or maybe by exterminating most of the plankton eating great wales of the ocean we have fundamentally altered the natural carbon cycle.

Or maybe the warming of the planet since the end of the Little Ice Age has fundamentally altered the natural carbon cycle.

No one really knows the answer to these basic questions, beyond the accuracy of the proverbial WAG. So to assume that cutting emissions will cut CO2 remains at this time just an assumption.

Hello –
We’re seeking a few reliable West Seattle area folk to put on our list of babysitters to call when we need someone for the occasional date night or other appointments. Our two boys are currently in first and fourth grade at Arbor Heights, and will talk avidly about soccer, whales, and/or Nintendo games to whomever will listen. They’re pretty easygoing and energetic, and aside from one food allergy there are no special issues to take into account.

This would be as needed, no particular set schedule; probably an average of two or three times a month, for about three hours each time. It would usually be on evenings during the school year, though in summer and vacation times, daytime slots would be possible. This would be a great side job for a high school or college student looking for occasional extra hours, or anyone else with childcare experience! $15/hour. We live in the Westwood/Fauntleroy area. Please email me (Molly) at molly.winter@earthlink.net if interested. Thank you!

I woke up this morning and flushed the toilet. The water that came out of the tank was yellow. Wondering if the toilet wasn’t flushing properly I checked the water in the tank and it was yellow. I ran the faucet. More yellow water.

Is anyone else experiencing similar issues? I haven’t contacted SPU yet, my morning has been a little crazy and will in a moment but was curious if it was more widespread than my house.

Someone might bike up Delridge because they live there or have business there. Downtown, the Second Ave bike lane is often blocked by construction and delivery traffic. I choose to bike on 3rd because I work at Marion & 4th, and trying to pump my little legs up the hill from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th would probably kill me.

@gburke:

I hope I can answer your question without literally muddying the waters. Underground, in the geology we have around here, water (or groundwater) exists in the pores or spaces between grains of sand or silt. Think of a swimming pool filled with sand, which is only half-filled with water. The level the water comes up to is the water table. This is the situation for much of West Seattle. The sand is called the Esperance Sand and the bottom of the pool is the underlying clay, the Lawton clay. The surface of the clay is not even, so water pools on-top of it.

So rather than a river, most of our houses sit on-top of a pool of groundwater. At the edges of the pool, where the topography sinks down and encounters the water table and the edge of the pool, groundwater discharges to springs and those give us the surface water creeks like Longfellow Creek and Schmitz Park Creek. Similar springs often discharge to curbs, or to storm drains where it sounds like a creek runs even in summer. Other sand/silt layers in the area behave in the same way.

Actual underground rivers are very uncommon in general but occur in Kentucky, Eastern WA, or other areas where actual limestone, fractured bedrock, or lava flows and lava tubes channel groundwater like a pipe and as such could resemble a river. While it would be cool to have such a underground river here we have no such luck. But on the other hand, you could use that pool of groundwater to both heat and cool your house, but it would involve drilling wells. And that gets expensive.

Parts of West Seattle (Pigeon Point, Delridge) have a three layer geology. The Vashon Till over the Esperance Sand, over the Lawton Clay. The Till is a combination of gravel/sand/silt and clay and it is very tough to dig into–if you have it, you know it. Bad for drainage and water in the crawlspace. I simplify things a bit. Plus we all live in a fault zone.

<http://green2.kingcounty.gov/groundwater/map.aspx> shows boring logs in the area with the very approximate geology and where groundwater occurs in your area.

I had no problem finding a housemate on Craigslist but I put the ad up myself looking for one. I had no luck when I just looked at the housing wanted ads. I got about 50 responses and was able to find a woman slightly older than me (I am mid 40s) who makes my home a better place to live and feels like family after only a few months. There are good people out there for sure!

So, we’re all very much in agreement that it is not okay to block the bike lane. I didn’t really focus on that in my previous posts, but just wanted to make sure that is understood. Hopefully we can have constructive conversations about this so that it is a good learning experience for the OP and any other readers.

I’m also hoping that the construction workers will stop blocking the bike lanes on North Delridge. Yesterday morning, there was a very large construction vehicle not only blocking the bike lane, but also partially out into the vehicle lane. I had to use the center turn lane right at this spot to make a left, but other cars were swerving into that lane to get around the construction vehicle. It was a dangerous situation for cars and bikes alike.

It is not any more OK to block the bike lane for a non-emergency than it would be to block the car lane or the sidewalk. Find a legal place to park, then take your phone call. You have no right to inconvenience others or put their safety at risk.

Thanks everyone. I took my vacuum cleaner to Best Vacuum in Burien per HelperMonkey above. For some reason we weren’t able to access the motor compartment, but the repairman was able to get it to start up again. So it’s working for now. May be time to start shopping for a new appliance.
