Ten months into Mayor Durkan’s term, KIRO ran a story on its MyNorthwest blog, “Why won’t Seattle Mayor Durkan meet with the Duwamish Tribe?” https://mynorthwest.com/1125149/why-wont-seattle-mayor-durkan-meet-with-the-duwamish-tribe/.

Well, it’s not like the answer is mysterious.

Eight months after that, reports the West Seattle Blog, the Mayor “scheduled a pop-up town hall/resource fair” (May 29) and the Duwamish Tribe invited its supporters to join in at the event to ask that the Mayor “support the Duwamish Tribe and acknowledge them as the first people of Seattle.” https://westseattleblog.com/2019/05/video-mayor-acknowledges-duwamish-tribe-answers-community-questions-south-park-town-hall/

So they were still asking, with nary a peep from the Mayor.

    But then it happened.

    “Honorable” mention.

    Twice!

“The mayor did just that, twice, while speaking and answering questions at the South Park Community Center.”

So a politician who finally paid lip service to undisputed fact is cause for Attagirl!??

    Apparently, in this town, yeah.

I attended the event. After the Q&A was over, I approached Sabrina Bolieu, the Mayor’s “Business Liaison” who is “also helping with the tribal outreach strategy.” Sabrina had been screening questions written beforehand on cards available at the reception table. I was curious why mine had not been read.

She explained that questions about recognizing the Duwamish had not been aired because the Town Hall was about public safety, but she assured me that “Mayor Durkan is working on a response to that.”

Now, six weeks later, I write this letter after two ignored emails to Bolieu and one to Durkan herself in which I merely asked for answers to obvious questions about the Mayor’s unresponsiveness to the Duwamish and her utter lack of action so far.

Extent of Durkan’s “outreach” to the Duwamish?

    Still zippo.

Either Durkan is playing hooky from “working on that” or simply doesn’t know how to get work done. At least, not any work that would break the deafening silence the Duwamish have gotten from the Mayor’s office for the better part of two centuries.

The Duwamish haven’t asked for their land back. Anyone who actually reads the “Treaty” of Point Elliott, 1855, (calling it a treaty is beyond reprehensible,) will wonder why the hell not.

I asked the Mayor if she’d read the treaty.

    Silence.

The Duwamish have not asked the City to start paying rent.

I asked Durkan if she pays rent to the tribe whose land she finally, twice, admitted Seattle sits on. It’s easy: Real Rent Duwamish, https://www.realrentduwamish.org/.

    Silence.

The Duwamish have not asked the Mayor for much.

Admitting their existence on one occasion a year and a half into her term, nothing done or said previously and nothing since, amounts to what, exactly?

~ Yeah, I know you’re there. I know you’ve been screwed over since whites came and stole your land out from under you. I know my office has ignored you for the 164 years since. And I know you’ve been asking for a meeting. ~

    Attagirl, Mayor! Good for you.

    And then… ?

I’m trying to help a nice young man who lost his beloved dog at westcrest dog park today. The dog’s name is Missy. She is wearing a tag with her human’s name and number (Samuel 253-861-6063) . Please keep an eye out for any little black dog you see wandering around. She is a digger and jumper, and darted towards the wooded area as soon as she entered the dog park, which was the last time she was seen. He spent hours looking for her earlier and I’m afraid she’s wandering around lost in the woods by the park. Please keep an eye out – especially if you live near west crest or notice any unattended dogs there. Thank you!

I found this site looking for a back yard to rent for gardening. Alas, there are no listings in Seattle yet. If you have a back yard you would like to rent, please list!

I am looking for a yard in Seattle that has access to a driveway where I can rent a space for a 10’x10′ portable greenhouse on a utility trailer.

I thought that on the 4th of July, there’d be just as many American flags lining the Junction as there were Pride flags last weekend. But the two times I went out today, I didn’t see any American flags. Kind of sad but not surprising considering Seattle’s politics.

Hello there. My son and I were just driving by and saw the aftermath of a pedestrian hit by a car. It was very traumatizing. If anyone could let us know how everything turned out that would be nice. Thank you

@Angelscrest: It makes no sense, legally, for the OP to be the one pursuing evidence and the local businesses have no obligation to provide it to the OP. If there is a criminal complaint and there is evidence to be pursued then it should be sought by the police otherwise chain of custody, which protects the integrity of the evidence, would be compromised and the evidence can be suppressed if there is a criminal prosecution.

That a similar event happened to you doesn’t make this a story that is more easily swallowed whole.

I agree with Mark. If someone is assaulting me I’m calling 911 not a friend. I wouldn’t wait till I got away, I want the police to come take him away in handcuffs. This is also a good reason not to park in alleys and go else where. Park in a proper spot.

I did read the story. It appeared that the police were called AFTER the friend was called. As for the apparent victim, well, they’re not here, there friend is making a plea for video that, if it exists, would be from the surrounding businesses which would be a much more constructive use of time and would also be sought by the police thereby avoiding problematic chain of custody issues if there was to be any sort of legal resolution.

I didn’t victim shame/blame beyond say that hitting the man with a car is vehicular assault and saying that this whole story is ridiculous. Perhaps you should reread MY post. Again, the credulousness of people sometimes amazes me and posting a story like this one cries out for scrutiny.

This whole thing is peculiar, really, the illegal parking notwithstanding.

The first thing that comes to mind is why did your friend not call the police instead you? What could you do about this situation?

The second is this: why are we so willing to take the word of complete strangers so completely? We have no idea what really took place. We have the OP relaying their friends story of possible assault by screaming guy followed by possible vehicular assault by lady in car. To me this sounds so completely ridiculous that I question its accuracy. But that’s me, not being a caring and credulous member of the community.

It’s the not calling the police part, by the way, that raises a big red flag. The few times I’ve had to call 911 I didn’t start by calling my buddies to see if they can help, I just called the police.

To preempt the inevitable WTF all I can say is this: a second hand story is just that, a story. I don’t know the either party and the story strains belief without corroborating evidence. Why should I believe it? Just because? I think not.

If anybody has rhubarb plants and don’t harvest them, would you please let me know, and I’ll come take it off your hands? :-) My husband keeps seeing ones in the neighborhood that are going to seed, which is such a shame LOL The ones in our yard aren’t yielding that many stalks, and I have a thing against buying them at the store :-( Thanks.

    Honesty like that is wonderful.

Back when I was a cashier at McLendon’s I had a customer, maybe a little younger than me, come through my line. His purchases came to just under $20.00. He handed me what registered in my mind as a $100.00 bill, so I gave him $80.00 and change in return.

There may have been a couple seconds pause, and he says; “Oh, man. I can’t do this to you. I only gave you a $20.00. I thought he was just joking, doing a reverse of that old scam where a “customer” will give a cashier a $10.00 bill, and after the till is closed claim that they paid with a $20.00 bill, so I just laughed at him. I then realized he was serious and checked under the till tray and there were no $100.00 bills under there, just a $20.00.

Needless to say, I thanked him profusely. I also replayed the whole part of when he gave me the money back in my head, and could *still* swear that he’s given me a $100.00 bill.

    Hello,
Just want to get it out there that my car was left unlocked and searched through in the middle of the night Friday, June 28th into Saturday the 29th. I awoke to find a mess in the car. Seems as though the intruder was looking for money because everything was left behind except for some coin change kept in the car. My neighbors car was also found with doors open on Saturday morning and ransacked.

Hello I work for a man named Jack that has a dog walking pet sitting business with well off clients in the Belltown area easy to get to clients homes by bus. He needs some over nights done and I don’t want to leave my cats alone at home during fourth of July cause off all the fireworks noise. His over night fees are $70 and its split 50% so you would make $35 for the night with two dog walks for potty breaks. This is his website if interested:https://belltowndogwalker.com/services-and-rates/

On Wednesday morning June 26th at approximately 11:00 am I dropped a friend off at her vehicle parked in a pet store parking space ( back alley) . I drove off and minutes later she called hysterical screaming and crying that a man approached her car, stood at her driver side window and angrily stared at her. She screamed “Can I help you, what do you want”? He did not answer and she started her car. The man became angry and walked to the front of the car to block her. He began to pound the cars hood, she was frightened and inched the car forward. He then ran to the driver window and began to punch the glass. She layed on the horn to draw attention as there were several people in the parking lot near Wells Fargo Bank. He continued to punch the car shouting ” You can’t leave”! She was able to drive off and call me to come help her. Police were called. * If anyone out there seen anything or have surveillance they are willing to share please reach out as this person will continue to terrorize young women in the area. Thank You

    Hello All:
I am about to get a hip replaced, and I am looking for a refrigerator or a small freezer to have on the same floor as my bedroom, to help get me through the recovery period.
Does anyone have a small fridge or freezer they don’t want or that I could borrow for a month or two?
I can come pick it up, but due to my bad hip, I cant do any big removal work.

Anyone have a solution or an idea? I would be very grateful.

    With thoughts of Peace,
    Charles Hidalgo-Meyer.
