I found out my basement flooded Saturday evening, I spend most of Sunday cleaning up and hauling stuff out that needed to be disposed of.

I got to the South Transfer Station to find that it is closed Sunday – Tuesday. Now I have a car full of debris that needs to go. Are there any other options for disposing of stuff like this when the Transfer Station is closed?

As someone who works full time, this is really difficult. I don’t want to pull everything out and have to reload the car again later.

    Thanks!

Dogs are the avatar of evil in this world, eh? Doubtful.

My dog doesn’t drive a car, engage in deforestation, damaging wetlands for the sake of earning a few more dollars or anything else.

I, on the other hand, drive a diesel pickup, have motorcycle for fun, work in a steel mill and consume to products of agribusiness.

I make it sounds worse than it is to make a point, before you feel smug. People are responsible for ecological damage. If dogs are perceived as predators that’s because they are. But they aren’t able to engage in the mass killings that humans are capable of.

So, dogs aren’t the problem, Merilieu, you are…as are the rest of us and, as such we are responsible for limiting our impact.

Recommendations, please! Really simple job. Need a new kitchen faucet installed. Straightforward, nothing unusual about this job. Would prefer an individual over a company (I know O’Neil and other companies are great but this is just so small that it is hardly worth their time. $$$).

I normally would use Joe The Plumber for a job like this but his website says he won’t be working for the next month.

It’s interesting that no one has brought up the effect of dogs on the beach on the environment. I’m just going to paste this here, for purposes of education and (optimistically) enlightenment, of all dog owners:

The evidence that dogs negatively impact wildlife is overwhelming. It is clear that people with dogs – on
leash or off – are much more detrimental to wildlife than people without dogs. Dogs (Canis lupus
familiaris) are considered to be a subspecies of wolves (Canis lupus), and wildlife perceive dogs as
    (30)
    predators.
    Impacts include:
    1. Physical and temporal displacement – The presence of dogs causes wildlife to move away, temporarily or permanently reducing the amount of available habitat in which to feed, breed and rest. Animals become less active during the day to avoid dog interactions. Furthermore, the scent of dogs repels wildlife and the effects remain after the dogs are gone.
    2. Disturbance and stress response – Animals are alarmed and cease their routine activities. This increases the amount of energy they use, while simultaneously reducing their opportunities to feed. Repeated stress causes long-term impacts on wildlife including reduced reproduction and growth, suppressed immune system and increased vulnerability to disease and parasites.
    3. Indirect and direct mortality – Dogs transmit diseases (such as canine distemper and rabies) to and from wildlife. Loose dogs kill wildlife.
    4. Human disease and water quality impacts – Dog waste pollutes water and transmits harmful parasites and diseases to people.

Please note, your dogs’ scent, and therefore its negative effects, remain long after you go home.

I went to the junction today to pick up some lunch and groceries for the week and had two very different experiences today.

Coastline has an amazing setup. You order in advance via their mobile site and your meal is pre-bagged and waiting for you on a table that separates you from the workers. Everyone was wearing a mask. I felt very safe and could tell that everyone is taking the necessary precautions.

Contrast this with the Seattle Fish Company where nobody was wearing masks and there is no guidance on how to avoid close proximity to employees or other shoppers. They have amazing seafood, but I turned around and walked out.

Is anyone else avoiding businesses that aren’t mandating the use of face masks?

Thanks TR, agreed. They sell more of the less common types of plants. I’ve tried West Seattle nursery but their selection of varieties is very slim. Thought about going over to vashon but never could figure out a way to pay with my orca card online so I wouldn’t have to touch anything. Hope they come back soon.

I came into today (5/20) for a crown and was shocked when Dr. Smith lowered his mask below his mouth – twice – to talk to me. This was at a distance of about 2 to 3 feet. I asked him to put his mask back on the second time, visibly upset now. He was better about PPE after that and apologized, but during my visit I saw at least 2 other staff members walking through the open concept hallways with lowered masks. Since patients receiving dental work obviously can’t wear masks themselves this seemed especially reckless and cavalier.

I would like to shout out Dr. Smith’s assistant, whose name I unfortunately did not catch, for being safe, professional and kind the entire time. I hope the rest of staff takes better care in the future.

Oh, I’m also open to dentist recommendations if you have any.

E-Bike: You said the following, “

You might consider giving people more credit. Look how we are responding to the Corona virus. I think very well. People have common sense. They are not going to ride fast until they feel competent at it. Practice makes perfect.

You must be joking. While I could cite numerous ways that people are utterly lacking in the benefit of the doubt I think I will stick with the number of rolled over cars our fair WS claims. Here’s a small sample of what I’ve witnessed on bike paths/multi-use paths in the few years:
People walking on bikepaths with earbuds in.
people walking three abreast an refusing to give way.
People yelling at me for calling the ubiquitous ‘on your left!”
People yelling at me riding my bike on the bike path (Myrtle Edwards, on the separate bike path).
People throwing cans and bottles at me.
People opening doors into oncoming bike traffic.
People turning across my lane of travel (this was the only time I saw a cop bust a driver for endangering a cyclist).

This list is much, much longer but I think I made my point.

I’m a avid cyclist and I’m down with coexistence. Coexistence work both ways though and in my experience, just from watching E-bikes on paths, E-bike users can be…incautious. I watch near misses due to a lack of awareness of how long it actually takes for them to stop or the results of all of that stopping power collide with physics and conservation of momentum. I watch E-bikers go zipping along crowded bike paths quite fast, fast enough that I’d have been riding on the road. What I’m saying is that there is nothing common about common sense.

I think it would be great if more people hopped on a bike – of any sort, or scooter, skateboard or anything to get the job done. I would also hope that those people would exercise a bit of sense lest they end up like those flipped cars.

Around 1PM today our families car was vandalized between Lander and Olga on 38th. Very clearly this isn’t an actual “tagger” and most likely a child who did this. If you live in this area and have either security cameras we would greatly appreciate your help. Here is the picture to the “beautiful” work this POS did.
