New Resident….I second the motion on the West Seattle YMCA…good resources there. And I’d like to welcome you to West Seattle. I’m originally from the east coast, so a transplant also…and I’ve been here in West Seattle for 33 years now. It’s a wonderful place to live. From walking in Lincoln Park, to Alki, to our Alaska Junction shopping area, you’ll find things to do for yourself, and things to do with your daughter. And the people on here are a wealth of information…so ask away….:)

The first place I’d steer you is the West Seattle YMCA. Lots of programs for kids, families, and adults: swimming, sports, dance, etc. They also have occasional family socials–the next one is 3/21. It’s a great place to network with other families in the area.

Your right about that! My dog is an alpha; she would get nothing out of going to the dog park because she would feel it to be her duty to “correct” other dogs’ behaviours.

Besides, one of our neighbor’s dog had a nasty bout with Giardia a few weeks ago; most likely picked up at the dog park.

Thanks flowerpetal, I take it we’ll never run into each other at the off-leash park, huh?

Keep in mind that off-leash dog parks and play dates aren’t a good idea for the majority of dogs.

You want your dog to think of you as it’s pack leader, not other dogs. And you don’t want them to see other dogs as fun and play, you should be the provider of their fun and play. You want them to look to you.

I’m not saying you, but way too many use the off leash parks and doggie play dates as a guilt free way of getting their dog exercise and “socialization”.

Dogs don’t need dogs outside their own pack to lead full happy lives. As flowerpetal says the last thing your sometimes naughty dogs is to be around other naughty dogs.

Outside of your dogs needing to know how to calmly and safely greet a strange dog, they don’t need playdates with other dogs that aren’t going to be members of their own pack.

Good luck, my rescued dogs have tried my patience many a time.

For example in my neighborhood at the uncontrolled intersection by my house I have to turn left. I can’t count how many times I’m there with my left turn signal on when someone approaches straight at me after I’ve all ready been at the intersection, and tries to go through without yielding to my left turn.

They need to realize the law treats the uncontrolled intersection as if there are stop signs at all 4 corners. So by my being first to the intersection and wanting to turn left means the other person must stop and allow me to complete my left.

I too was looking for part time work and considered doing something on the internet. I was thinking that would be great because I would be at home and be able to work in my own time. Unfortunately, my email is now bombarded with emails from these “work from home” scams. If anyone knows of any legitimate work from home businesses, please pass it along!

All uncontrolled intersections are the same as a 4 way stop. It doesn’t matter if you think the road you are traveling on is the “main” road or not, you yield to those there first, and if you arrive at the same time then yield to the car to your right.

And just so everyone knows, the traffic circles that the city of Seattle thinks are the answer to everything? If it’s safe to do so, you don’t have to go all the way around the circle when turning left, you can go in front of it to take your left turn.

It could have been interesting but the recording was so mangled my woofer rattled the china cabinet so bad I had to flee.

Personally, when I come to an unmarked intersection, I will yield until I’m sure I won’t get hit. I’ve seen too many people blow through those intersections without a second glance, and also plowing into the traffic circles without noticing you’re there already, so for my own safety I treat them like yields or stop signs always. I figure it doesn’t matter what you’re “supposed” to do if someone does something else and hits you.

I have another question about the area. If you are driving from 35th Ave. north of Fauntleroy towards California Ave., which way should traffic yield through that neighborhood? A lot of the intersections have those round abouts, but some don’t and some don’t have yield or stop signs for either street. We have seen traffic going both ways without even slowing down.

Its not in West Seattle, but we found the best classes at Family Dog Center in Kent (but nearer to South Center). There website is familydogonline.com

I would shy away from having your pups fraternize with other naughty dogs. Perhaps well mannered dogs would give a better example. I know that Family Dog Center recommends doing individualized training with dogs when a household has more than one. The other should be kenneled up, or in the house and not a distraction.

We just moved to Seattle from Phoenix and we couldn’t be more happy. We love it here in West Seattle! I wanted to try and reach out to other parents, or just get suggestions, on finding new friends for my daughter. She doesn’t live in Seattle full time yet, that’s a work in progress, so she doesn’t attend school here. She usually comes to Seattle once a month for a long weekend, sometimes twice a month. It would be great to find some other kids in our neighborhood around her age. She is 8. I’ve never been on a blog before, so I’m not sure how this all works. But again, any suggestions would be great. Also, any suggestions on anything in the area that you would like to share with a new resident would be great! Thanks.

    JoB:

I have tested several html and XML markups already. I wanted to give WSB a chance to delineate what he intended the various filters, edit modules and security features to actually do so I would know when to just use what I found or notify him privately if I find something that does not seem to work as intended.

I have already found code that works on the main comments page if the preview is bypassed but gets filtered when using the preview mod. Not anything serious but kinda annoying since paragraph breaks seem to work … whimsically.

Besides docs are available for most of the mods available for WordPress and I am an RTFM kinda guy. I made a living in the old days deciphering the nearly impenetrable Dos 3 documentation (Dos 5 was even worse, rumor has it that the early Microsoft millionaires that were too young to feel they could retire, wrote the docs).

I don’t think of them as “regs” since the complex codebase of wordpress is littered with mods and plugins that generate odd bugs depending on which list of features your trying to install. Every CMS platform either closed or open source, has similar issues.

We are the roommates of two shiba inus (smallest of the japanese spitz) rescue dogs. We rescued them within a week of one another nearly a year ago, not realizing our lives would include moving cross country before they were fully trained and socialized and quite frankly underestimating the challenges of the breed.

We make progress. We have them in training.. both puppy classes and in home work.

But both humans and dogs need some friends who are struggling with the same issues.

so i am looking for other people who have taken on some of our more challenging four legged friends. We are looking for play dates (they need to learn how to play nicely with others.. ), resources and perhaps a bit of mutual training assistance and support.

Any other dog people out there crazy enough to take on some of our more boisterous and/or troubled four legged friends?

I would like to commend the DPD for stepping up and taking further action on this matter in the face of NUMEROUS other valid complaints all over the city. I was contacted personally by the DPD investigator assigned to this case. The DPD is in the process of resolving this complaint by the means they have available to them. I would like to say that the DPD has the authority to cite but is not given the authority to take any further action against the person in violation. The DPD is taking this matter very seriously, and has been all this time. They are, for the first time, taking a NEW tactic on this kind of violator. I did not tell the DPD about my post on this blog, however they were aware of it. I believe this post is what propelled this case. I would like to thank the WSB for making this forum available to the public. I, for the first time, feel like I have affected change in a very complicated, overwhelmed, bureaucratic agency. I believe this would not have been possible if it were not for this blog. There is power in numbers. If you have an issue that is stuck in a governmental quagmire, I encourage you to speak up and make your challenge public. Thank you again. –Jack

hey guys.. how about the good old fashioned test method.

you post it. if it doesn’t show up or gets deleted.. it didn’t work.

nothing personal… just a line crossed.

maybe if something is deleted, they send you a quick note explaining why. :) sometimes my humor is a bit to dry to always read as humor…

As someone who has tried to moderate before, posting “policies and rules” only encouraged people to find ways to get around them.. it didn’t add clarity.

but maybe this webmaster is far more prescient than i and can navigate the shoals of “regs” more easily… whatever… i am just a passenger on this one.

Burien Natural Gas got the nod. They came out on Monday, provided a reasonable quote and did the install Tuesday.

FWIW, I called Washington Energy services. They were supposed to come out Monday at 9 AM. The sales guy called at 9:15 saying that he was going to be a few minutes late for our 9:15 appointment. After 9:30 and still no show, I gave up on the company. You know it isn’t going to go well when the sales guy starts lying before he shows up.

I found from previous research that there are a lot of scam artists in the furnace install business….

    My contribution to your day,enjoy:)

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years before. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to co-ordinate their travel arrangements, so the husband flew to Florida ahead of his wife, who planned to fly down the following day.

The husband checked into the hotel and, unlike years ago, there was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address and, without noticing his error, sent the message.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral, and was reading her emails – expecting messages from relatives and friends. After opening the first message, she screamed and fainted. Her son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and then glanced up and saw the computer screen, which read as follows:

    To: My Loving Wife

    Date: Thursday 15th November 2007

    Subject: I Have Arrived!!!!

    Dearest Love,

I know you are surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now, and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I have just arrived and been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow, and look forward to seeing you then.

PS It sure is hot down here!!!

Before I start trying different tags and seeing what is passed by the editor and what is purged on re-edit, can the admin (That’s you WSB) toss out a few clues?

What wordpress mods are in use. Are they different for the comments on the main page and the forum? I feel it is impolite to run a script on your host that searches for the php info file. I also assume you have disabled it :)

Have you ever used a tinyMCE plugin with WP? or the wysiwyg upgrade? There are 1400 plugins currently and some are used for posting and editing on other WP sites as well as drupal and scoop.

I understand the reasons and wisdom of limiting code input and filtering code down to a minimum for security reasons as well as estethics, but figuring out what works where is by trial and error and should not be the norm for your average user.

In light of the lessons taught in that video, here is a little Irony to wash it down with.

    Republicans Speak Out on War

The following quotes were made by Republicans during the Kosovo campaign.

“You can support the troops but not the president.” –

    Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

“[The] president is once again releasing American military might on a foreign country with an ill-defined objective and no exit strategy. He has yet to tell the Congress how much this operation will cost. And he has not informed our nation’s armed forces about how long they will be away from home. These strikes do not make for a sound foreign policy.” –

    Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA)

“American foreign policy is now one huge big mystery. Simply put, the administration is trying to lead the world with a feel-good foreign policy.” –

    Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

“If we are going to commit American troops, we must be certain they have a clear mission, an achievable goal and an exit strategy.” –

Karen Hughes, speaking on behalf of George W. Bush

“I had doubts about the bombing campaign from the beginning. I didn’t think we had done enough in the diplomatic area.” –

    Senator Trent Lott (R-MS)

“Well, I just think it’s a bad idea. What’s going to happen is they’re going to be over there for 10, 15, maybe 20 years.” –

    Joe Scarborough (R-FL)

“I cannot support a failed foreign policy. History teaches us that it is often easier to make war than peace. This administration is just learning that lesson right now. The president began this mission with very vague objectives and lots of unanswered questions. A month later, these questions are still unanswered. There are no clarified rules of engagement. There is no timetable. There is no legitimate definition of victory. There is no contingency plan for mission creep. There is no clear funding program. There is no agenda to bolster our overextended military. There is no explanation defining what vital national interests are at stake. There was no strategic plan for war when the president started this thing, and there still is no plan today.” –

    Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

“Explain to the mothers and fathers of American servicemen that may come home in body bags why their son or daughter have to give up their life.” –

    Sean Hannity, Fox News, 4/6/99

“Victory means exit strategy, and it’s important for the president to explain to us what the exit strategy is.” –

    Governor George W. Bush (R-TX)

“This is President Clinton’s war, and when he falls flat on his face, that’s his problem.” –

    Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN)

“Bombing a sovereign nation for ill-defined reasons with vague objectives undermines the American stature in the world. The international respect and trust for America has diminished every time we casually let the bombs fly.” –

    Representative Tom Delay (R-TX)

“I think it’s also important for the president to lay out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will be withdrawn.”

    -George W. Bush, 6/5/99

“It doesn’t make any sense to have a timetable. You know, if you give a timetable, you’re conceding too much to the enemy.”

    -George W. Bush, 6/24/05
